If I don't get any joy out of the SB+, Dac32 or Naim NDX then I'' give the Pi (or more probably the Touch) and the Naim Dac V1 a go. If that doesn't do it I'll consider a turntable, pretty likely decide against it and sell the lot. Currently I am still trying to get the right Naim pre-amp, amp and PSU. adamslim wrote: > > > adamslim wrote: > > Obviously it may be different from a CDX; Naim would probably say they > > are better...> > > Yes. Re: [slim] (Vaguely) Audiophile alternative to Transporter and SB+?
Personally I stockpiled SBTs on ebay so have a never ending supply of touchscreen bit-perfect digital sources to feed to whatever DAC takes my fancy. :) Right now it's a Mytek DSD192 (also scalped used from Ebay for a sensible price). Prior to that it was a Naim Supernait built-in DAC. I would agree that earlier Naim gear had a very different sound from most "hifi". I heard it described once as the "big mono" sound, it really drives the bass and produces a lively immediate sound, without emphasising the "detail" that actually -is- in there, you just have to stop dancing long enough to listen for it. Later Naim gear is moving more mainstream sounding in fact (which is why they're now winning awards..). On the "bit perfect" story above. Weirdly I discovered that the SBT won't output 66khz sampled audio. Crashes every time. No idea where that track came from, but there you are; I have to resample it to play it. Other than that I have no reason to believe that any digital source is any better than this. Even a Chromecast Audio - which has a dreadful analogue output, makes a perfectly fine digital source. -- Hardware: 3x Touch, 1x Radio, 2x Receivers, 1 HP Microserver NAS with Debian+LMS 7.9.0 Music: ~1300 CDs, as 450 GB of 16/44k FLACs. Re: [slim] (Vaguely) Audiophile alternative to Transporter and SB+?
Hello stranger! The SB ecosystem is much more flexible now than it used to be - it plays to DLNA devices and more via plugins that are very reliable, so there's every chance that you can splurge money on a Naim streamer and it will work well with SB Server. It's way more reliable than it was when I had the Linn Akurate DS. Apart from that it's a suitable player like a Pi plugged into an async USB DAC. The DAC I would like to try would be the Okto DAC - Audio Science Review is a good source of testing (measuring) for DACs, and that one is as good as anything for a sensible price (about a grand). It also has a Pi built in for the streaming facility. They also sell cables "from as little as £165", you'll be pleased to know. According to the testimonials on their website, the cables deliver "very smooth and controlled sound with more panache and detail across the whole spectrum" (Bob) and "a ridiculous level of performance for a ridiculously low price" (D, RH15). Re: [slim] (Vaguely) Audiophile alternative to Transporter and SB+?
Well, thank you all very much for this. I have purchased a DAC32 (no display does not worry me as I use the wonderful Orange Lab apps on my Android phone). I have also found a top-end hifi repair person in my own village (!!) who now has my SB+. He even ti=urns out to be the son of a friend of mine. Link below for anyone in the UK in need of those sorts of services. I am still accumulating all the Naim kit but when I have it and running I am hoping to be able to borrow a Naim NDS or NDX. If I can I am going to compare the three head units. I am no audiophile but to me the olive Naim kit sounds completely different to any other set up. It seems to have an inherent swing and sex that makes even music I don't like sound good. And the sublime sound of the Shahinian Arcs (omni-directional and perfect for my 'difficult' lounge') complement the Naim kit perfectly (I really don't like the Naim speakers I've heard). I've not yet tried Naim streamers but for plain lush listenability, in my old setup, their CD Player, the CDX beat the socks of any streamers I tried. It'll be interesting to see if their streamer does the same thing. I bloody well hope not as the cost is crippling (thank God for Bitcoin!). Again. thanks very much. In my Living Room HiFi I have a Pi4 with a Khadas Tone Board. The latter is a highly respected USB DAC capable of 32bit etc far beyond anything you can currently throw at it. The Pi runs piCorePlayer and they are in expensive WAF cases. I consider this player to be about as good as you can get for a Pi + USB DAC arrangement. I put it against a newly acquired DAC32. Yes the Khadas Tone Board is better but its very very close. The Pi plus Tone Board and cases came to about £230. The DAC32 is £65. [slim] (Vaguely) Audiophile alternative to Transporter and SB+?
Hello. If anyone can help me I'd be grateful. I'm recreating a hifi I sold 15 years ago when I moved into a building site. I have a problem with the front end though. I used to use a @-tunes modified SB3 called an SB+ which was good. I also had a Transporter but did not get along with it. So I'm looking for suggestions for a high quality front end. I have wondered if there's a company that makes top-end audio adaptions of the raspberry pi but am basically open to any suggestions. For anyone who might be interested this is the system I'm re-building. Speakers: Shahinian Arcs Amp: Naim NAP180 PSU: HiCap Pre-amp: NAC102 You might think my obvious choice of front end was the Naim NDS or NDX but I prefer the Squeezebox ecosystem and these two items are silly money (and you still need to buy power supply!). Thanks for any suggestions.
