No. Sonos is mainly speakers. They have a display-less standalone box that acts like a Squeezebox by letting you connect this Sonos box to a pre-amp or receiver to feed content to your home stereo system. Squeezeboxes are feed over the local network by a Server or Internet connection via MySB.com. Glad you found something that you feel will work for you. It is ALWAYS a bonus when the better half can actually use it plus doesn't mind having it in the room! Nothing like a pair of Apogee Acoustics Duetta Signatures placed six feet off the back wall sticking out into the living room with room warmers stacked up on both sides of the TV to cause problems with the better half! My issue with Musaic and Sonos is the same issue. For me, I can't deal with a system that will be outdated because the main part of the system is -*THEIR*- speaker. For quick sound in a room, I have my Boom and Baby Units (or combine a Touch with a pair of AE 5+ speakers). For true music listening, I unfortunately require real stereo with correct phase and time alignment that reproduces the soundstage of the recording as close as possible for the amount of money I wish to spend, which currently is impossible with a single enclosure the size of a large loaf of bread (everybody seems to be falling for the Bose's Lie). There is a reason that both Musaic and Sonos DON'T list the frequency response of their products. And of course there is my investment is Digital Media since I have been buying CDs since the early 1980's. . *iPhone* Media Room: ModWright Platinum Signature Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Transporter, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Office: Touch with Vandersteen VSM-1s Kitchen: Touch in-wall mount w/ Thiel Powerpoint 1.2s Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Around the House: SliMP3, SB1, SB2, SB3 Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Enjoy the Music, wherever it comes from! Hopefully you will check back in every once in a while to see how things are, how Squeezeboxes is doing, and see who is "Bashing" you next. Good Luck! It is all relative but more importantly it is especially relative to personal preference and more specifically one's needs. Exile had all good reasons to want to try something new and go with a change. I have looked at Sonos many times but three main things have always stopped me from going with them. First is there Server has a library size limit which I exceeded several times over years ago. Second Sonos reminds me of Apple with everything being proprietary and closed so other companies can't make accessories. Third, there products are way over priced for what one ends up with especially since Audiophile Streaming is coming our way IE Sonos reminds me of Bose Radios that are just networked and not actually about HiFi. Also, I always read and hear about people having "Issues" with drop outs or buffering or syncing issues. I have had maybe four in 10 years to which I immediately solved. I have yet to ever find any of these issues to be Squeezeboxen or LMS issues. They seem to always be due to trying to do more then one's setup can handle IE not enough bandwidth, not enough Server processing power, poorly laid out WiFi Network, bad WiFi channel choice (living in a 400 unit apartment complex with everybody on the default channel), or Squeezeboxen at the maximum range of one's WiFi coverage or one to many brick walls between it and the WiFi Router. I ran Ethernet to my two farthest and all fixed position units and built a shelf in the top of my Network Closet so my WiFi router is as high as possible but still inside the house in a climate controlled location. I have not had a single Squeezeboxen or LMS issue in years. I did the same thing for my parents' setup and my sister's home and things work flawlessly (powerful enough Server, proper network layout). When I visit them, I check for updates and that is all I have had to do in over 6 years. Five or ten years ago, Servers and Harddrives were more expensive and smaller with less powerful processors. For many Squeezeboxen users, simply updating/upgrading their servers and fixing their local network issues would eliminate most complaints or issues. I have been using Vortexbox for almost a decade and now having the OS running all by itself on a 60GB SSD with four 8TB hard drives in the server hard drive bays runs perfectly. *iPhone* Media Room: ModWright Platinum Signature Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Wood Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1, Vandersteen V2W Subwoofer Living Room: Transporter, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Office: Touch with Vandersteen VSM-1s Kitchen: Touch in-wall mount w/ Thiel Powerpoint 1.2s Bedroom: Squeezebox BOOM Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Around the House: SliMP3, SB1, SB2, SB3 Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
I have 2 SBB's and I love them. But when Logitech dropped Sirius/XM I knew I would eventually have to switch. I use the Squeezebox app on my Ipad and that works fine. I never was into LMS. It was too much of a hassle. So I bought into the Sonos system and the app is very easy to use. The units are always in sync. They sound great and it's easy to build playlists. Sonos works great with the files on my desktop PC. The only problem with SONOS is they are expensive. The cheapest way to get into SONOS is the play 1 speaker ($200) each. I have 2 so for $400 you get 2 great sounding speakers. I also have 2 Play 5's which are expensive. But the ease of use is worth it to me. There aren't a lot of options out there for streaming music unless you go with bluetooth speakers and they don't sound half as good as SB or SONOS. Sonos isn't an open source product like LMS but it's also not a closed product like itunes or Apple products. It's not an Apple product and it really doesn't operate as an Apple type product. just chiming in... Sonos had One Store only in Santa Barbara , CA they supposedly opened a store in Manhattan, NY but more disturbingly to me is now also available in apple stores . I personally hate anything to do with apple wow dude you got to be kidding me I took a look at Sono's Magical Music Server it looks like an iproduct I = apple all over which I wouldn't even get near, you may obtain this server at maximum price at vendors like BestBuy or Target. I sometimes in emergencies buy media at BestBuy that's about it also on amazon im guessing you shopped there. services like Spotify or , Sirius XM ,, Amazon Cloud Player, Apple Music etc.. never have peeked an interest for me simply because my libraries are larger bottom line so paring your sonos smart speaker to your rack mount NAS or prefabbed NAS if you are lucky to have obtained that much music is no different than using a squeezebox UE radio Grace Audio which also communicates with LMS for I have one as well.. I was impressed with Sony's radio station capability many do vary from manufacture if you search out genre specific and favorite stations throughout the world I don't see the point in the hardware change except that sonos will probably limit you eventually with proprietary software bundling you may not even be aware of at this time. truthfully if I play my music via DLNA from a projection screen or through a whole house sound system tied in DLNA is clearly the portal for a PB or larger library not a player with 3rd party streaming services I mentioned; you can get that from a flipping computer. -LMS 7.7.2 | AS-604T | WiFi Radio x 3 | DLNA x 5- Arniceous's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=62899 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yes, definitely the trade-off - I have no desire to have tablet/phone in the bedroom, and if I did, fidgeting through to the app to operate a Sonos is not attractive to me (OK for managing a HiFi connected device though). Quite possibly, had there been an SBR equivalent in the Sonos line-up I might have jumped ship! I'm hanging in there with a mix of Raspberry Pi, Squeezebox Touch, Squeezebox Radio... Bluesound seem to have gone for a similar product range as Sonos. Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
I still have my SB 3 - and use it some - with my main/family room stereo, an NAD receiver, a set of PSB speakers, an Oppo universal player. That said, my daughter bought me a set of Sonos Play:1 speakers for my 60th birthday and it utterly changed my listening life. I suppose if you have very, very nice stereo equipment this won't do, but as reviewers have noted, the Play:1s punch way above their weight. They're very flat out of the box and the Sonos room tuning is a subtle, but welcome addition. To the point: I have a few thousand CDs, lots of FLAC/ALAC files, as noted a decent stereo, good headphones, and a love of tinkering. But I still use the Sonos about 90 percent of the time - it sounds that good. Spotify at 320 kpbs ogg is indistinguishable from lossless to my ears. (At 60, my ears are the ultimate hard limit; I have tinnitus and hearings loss above 12-13K). My listening habits have changed as well; I listen to far fewer complete albums, and far more radio and radio-like things. Pandora, Slacker and TuneIn get at least 50 percent of my time. Again, I still like and use my Squeezebox, and have a Boom and Duet on the shelf. But I get why Sonos is so popular, even among those of us who couldn't care less about lifestyle products. s. satkinsn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11398 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

(Not to mention the openess of the Squeezebox system with its various plugins and its wide support of tags and music sources) It's a pity that there is no replacement for the Radio. Neither in the Squeezebox world nor in any other system. I think there a several devices similar to the Squeezebox Touch (mostly RaspberryPi with Touchscreen). But there's nothing like the radio with all the hardware buttons, small size, portable with rechargeable battery. As you said, perfect for bedside and kitchen. It's seems if nowadays you have to use a shitty app or at least a touchscreen for almost everything. Spotify is 320k - if one configures high quality streaming under options - which sounds plenty good. A well-implemented 320k MP3 stream will pretty much be CD quality, and the vast majority of people won't be able to tell it apart from a FLAC stream (I can only do so for a very few tracks that are extremely well recorded and which I am extremely familiar with, and even though it's a highly unenjoyable experience to listen so critically). The one issue with Spotify in the SB ecosystem is the inability to play playlists from Spotify. I don't think there's a way to show up SB devices as playback devices in the Spotify app? Then again Spotify's playlist management to this day is kinda frustrating. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 12) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hi Exile, if Spotify is what you listen to, I can completely understand you crossing over to the dark side ;-) The ease of use on Sonos and the reliability are great for that, friend of mine has Sonos and I never get a call that something is not working, whilst two friends that I got started on LMS plus PIs run into issues once in a while. For people who love their own large library especially also with hires files, Sonos isn't an option, strange they have still not redone their Boxen to accommodate these users. So enjoy your Sonos, absolutely the right decision for your needs. The only bad thing is, the Sonos community is so boring compared to ours, so you will loose a bit of a hobby. Whatever works for you is what is best for you:D I've thought a couple times LMS had a foot in the grave. I almost bailed when MOG went bye bye. I thought that was the beginning of the end. Then when the Triode Spotify app seemed broken I just knew it was over. Then Spotify got fixed and Tidal came along. I'm happier than ever, but I get it, I really do. I'm wondering if the LMS app will cover Tidal Master quality though. I wrote a blog on my own page (which likely no one has ever saw :D) and surmised that with everything having an app now that a server type system wasn't really necessary. The blog was in regards to using bluetooth speakers though.. Still every service I use has an app. At work where I don't have wifi I plug my phone with unlimited data into my tube amp (yeah I have a tube amp at work) and stream Spotify off of it. hagensieker's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59959 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I am a very happy Transporter/iPeng user. My Transporter is now about 10 years old. Where did that time go? Seems like yesterday when I was taking it out the box and installing it on my HiFi rack. I have over 64,000 FLAC tracks stored on my server hard drive. I think that alone would prevent me from moving to Sonos. I believe there is a 50,000 or 60,000 track limit on Sonos systems. Re: [slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
i know that for many others out there the LMS/Spotify partnership is great so I can only speak to my own experience. my system was two squeezebox3's and two squeezebox2's with a dedicated mac mini server running on a fast (average of 90mbps) wireless network, I ran into recurring problems getting the spotify streams to play on one box and way too many problems having multiple boxes play spotify in sync. For me, the lack of consistency with spotify was the final straw. I would've much rather stayed with Squeezeboxes (the cost alone to go sonos is brutal but more importantly I'm giving up ten years of trackstat ratings and stats.) but I no longer have the patience to troubleshoot squeeze server issues. Over the holiday, I spent a week with my brother-in-law who has a sonos system for 5 rooms and in the course of playing spotify music for seven days we ran into zero problems with syncing or playing any and all tracks and that sealed the deal for me. Also, the fact that there's no real future development of the squeeze product line also helped me make the move. exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] A Final Goodbye and thanks to this amazing community
So after more than a decade of dedicated squeezeboxen life I find myself moving onto a Sonos system. Therefore, I simply want to thank this entire community because it's the folks here on this forum that made my squeezebox audio listening experience so rewarding. The true power of the squeeze server was it's open source structure and community plug in development. I loved using a variety of plugins to customize, organize and generally focus my listening experience. Big thanks to: michael herger, greg brown, richard titmuss and Gordon Harris for their hard work. And the two people that completely transformed how I listened to and used my squeeze system: Pippin and Erland. I move onto Sonos now which I know will not completely replace my squeeze system but hopefully it will advance my music listening experience. The main reason I finally switched is because I no longer need to listen to my own music. Spotify pretty much satisfies all of my listening needs and Sonos just simply works much better with spotify. Thanks for all of the great listening over the years... exile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4579 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106703 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
