I've been a Squeezebox fan since I bought my first SB1, and I used the Slimserver interface for years before I ever looked at iTunes. When I bought an iPhone a couple of years ago and started trying to use iTunes to manage music for it, I couldn't understand why the interface was so useless, and I still don't. Why would I *always* want to play an entire album if I selected just one track? And really, why would I *always" want to play the same songs in the same sequence from a static playlist? I see lots of iTunes users have asked similar questions, year after year, with no answers. Ok. In the meantime I had a look at the iTunes COM interface, and can safely say that it is pre- Jurassic; (it looks like it has not been touched since decades); and to be specific it does support COM commands to the player, but only to the default local player on the PC where iTunes is itself running; but it does not have an interface for enumerating remote players (such as Airport players) and thus nor does it have an interface for controlling those players. Re: [slim] Apple's Airplay coming soon...
Airtunes has been around for a while. However, I've never really been tempted to build a system with iTunes as a 'server' application because it's not built to be one. It's a foreground application with a GUI and can only stream at a time (although that one stream can have many simultaneous endpoints). Moreover, unless I can get a 500GB iPAD, it wouldn't be an appropriate host for my music collection. Even if I could fit a large music collection on a flash-based device, whenever I wanted to use a different device to stream my music collection I'd need to have a copy of my music collection there as well. It would be a major problem to keep multiple copies in synch. So, I clearly need a client-server approach, which the Airtunes/Airplay ecosystem doesn't have. I am not aware that there are any plans to change that. -- dsdreamer -- "Dreamer, easy in the chair that really fits you..." dsdreamer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12588 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I agree with most of what goody said. I do fear that the Squeezebox/audiophile end of the market is a niche and that Logitech probably aren't going to invest too much time and money in this area. The developers of this product do a great job, but I do worry that it's being really left behind by numerous competitors and it's only the loyalty of the existing community and the third party plugins which are keeping them in the game. Having said that I am very happy with my Squeezebox system and hope to be using it and adding to it for a good while yet. -- robroe robroe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14248 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Apple's Airplay coming soon...
My two cents on this: Apple entering your market is never good. There are millions of iphones, ipad, and ipods that will be capable of streaming content. If they license airplay to 3rd party manufacturers, there will be hundreds of devices that they could stream to. Just look at how many ipod docks there are out there! The starting point is a $99 apple tv to start streaming to my home theater system; typically the best audio setup in a house and located in a main area. Also, lets say i own an iphone and go to buy a new audio component, it will be logical for me to choose one with streaming from a device i own. Also remember the mass market are not audiophiles, so simple streaming from a device they already own makes sense. I also read in one of those articles that synch between multiple devices will be supported. All of that is not good for sb as we know it. It will not be priced competitvely or have the simplicity that the mass market will demand. So what do you do if you are logitech? You team up with google and google tv. I think there is a reason that you cannot buy a receiver anywhere in the U.S. I also think moving the Touch to be logitech exclusive are both signs of the direction we are heading. Logitech are focusing there resources elsewhere. Lets face it, a $300 touch as just a music streamer is no longer relative against an ipod/airplay combo where pricing will start around the same but is capable of so much more (apps, movies, ebooks, portability etc). Plus people will already be invested with their idevice. My theory is that logitech is no longer focused on squeezebox devices, but on google tv and that in the next few weeks we will hear an announcement that it will ship before the holidays. It will be the streaming device of choice. I dont think that is the death of sb or that we all will have to leave our devices behind, but that the sb ecosystem will be integrated and rolled into google tv. Im sure that google/android wants the same features as wellthink what happens if all android devices becone logitech streamers! This is all just a theory and im not hating on sb. I still love my setup, but just really curious as to what the future holds. -- goody goody's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22405 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I think this might people excited about wireless streaming and it could be actually good for Logitech given the lower price than Sonos. People who finally "get it" as to what good streaming is about may go looking for a better solution. Also, I do not think Airplay will initally support FLAC if at all so for some like me it would not be an option. -- froth froth's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11878 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yes AirPlay is derived from the older AirTunes. There was room for improvement, I guess we can suppose that if Denon et al. decide to pay the tax and integrate the adhoc chip, either the protocol is much better than before (it can do video, so things have changed), or this is cheaper than a physical iPod dock. Is BridgeCo the foundation for 'Made for AirPlay' Apple accessories? http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/09/is-bridgeco-the-foundation-for-made-for-airplay-apple-accessor/ "Hands up if you've ever heard of BridgeCo. No? Us neither, but that's about to change following a CNBC report detailing the company's relationship with Apple. BridgeCo is in the business of embedding its network media processor and software stack into its partners' audio equipment to enable wireless streaming. Now, according to a CNBC interview with BridgeCo CEO Gene Sheridan, Apple decided sometime last year to make BridgeCo an AirPlay launch partner. As such, any vendor that embeds BridgeCo's newest tech will be able to accept streaming audio (and its metadata) from an iTunes library or handheld iOS 4.2 device -- there's no mention of video or picture streaming although AirPlay supports both. According to CNBC, audio gear should start arriving with the BridgeCo software in time for the holidays allowing iTunes users to "mix and match their favorite equipment with a common software." What that means isn't exactly clear, though BridgeCo does offer the ability to link systems into a distributed home audio network that includes a "party mode" where all speakers are synced to play from a common source. Importantly, according to Sheridan, this is the first time that Apple has opened up its iTunes software to a third party, giving it a glimpse at the source code." -- goody goody's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22405 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yeah, isn't it essentially AirTunes with a built-in speaker (instead of having to bring your own powered speakers)? And maybe a screen with Now Playing information? Doesn't seem to be too much of a earth shaker... -- spedinfargo spedinfargo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15712 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I believe you can only stream from iOS4 devices and iTunes, but I'm not sure whether the API will allow apps such as spotify to stream as well. I'd be pretty surprised but it could happen. Another note is that they are licensing Airplay to speaker/dock manufacturers so that you can push the music to them too. It doesn't seem that different to AirTunes or Microsoft "send to device"/media center, its just got that ease of use/polish/mainstream that Apple brings. Something like this, but open source/pluggable and able to push to squeezeboxen would be ideal for me. As for it bringing Logitech sales I fear the opposite could just as easily be the case. -- robroe robroe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14248 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I think your referring to the AppleTV, but this thread is about Apple's new Airplay streaming solution. Sounds interesting, but im still not exactly sure howit will work. I've ordered one. I don't see it replacing the Logitech Touch for Audio though. For my purposes, it simply doesn't do FLAC and now I've got Spotify going on it, it's a very good piece of audio equipment that wouldn't be replaced by the Apple TV device. I'll mostly be using the Apple TV to stream video from my Iphone. Maybe the odd bit of casual internet radio listening. -- HectorHughMunro HectorHughMunro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Apple's Airplay coming soon...
Yeah, it will be interesting to see how it goes. Most of the time when I explain I don't have to sneakernet my ipod around the house to put in various docking stations to listen I'm met with blank stares. I'm guessing the apple people out there might start to get it now. Might even help with sales of squeezebox products. Guess we'll see. -- slally slally's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33031 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
