[slim] Connection problems SB classic

2009-02-15 Thread 3nuttyspringers

Not sure if this is the correct place for this, but here goes.

I have had my SB classic for about a week now.
Vista basic, Netgear DG834GT router and isp aol.

I am having a problem in as much as the SB sometimes cannot connect to
the squeeze network, or cannot find the address etc.Sometimes when it
does connect, every couple of minutes or so it keeps buffering.
At other times I can listen to internet radio for hours, at the moment
I have had it on for almost 4 hours and it hasn't missed a beat.
When I have the problems, my other internet radio (Roberts WM-202) is
working fine.
Both radios are conected via wifi, and I have checked and double
checked the settings wep key etc, and they are all correct.

The router is in the hall and the SB is in the kitchen. Distance from
router to SB approx 7 metres.
Now the Kitchen problem is not such a huge one, BUT when I wish to use
the SB in the bedroom, that's when the problems intensify, and last
night I could not connect at all. Distance from Router to bedroom
approx 8 metres (Bungalow).
Kitchen and bedroom doors are always open.

One thing probably worth a mention, is that since about Thursday until
yesterday (Saturday) aol have been having mega problems, which resulted
in either no connection at all for numerous hours or connection dipping
constantly on and off.
Only today does aol seem to have a stable connection.

Any ideas would be appreciated please.

I think the first thing to isolate is whether the problem is internal in
your WiFi network or external in the internet connection (AOL and DSL?).
To eliminate WiFi as a variable, if you have a long Ethernet cable on
hand, you could temporarily hard wire the Squeezebox to the router, to
see if that makes any difference. One potential source of localized
intermittent WiFi interference could be a cordless phone in use in the
house.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
I have now hard wired it, and will test it tonight.
Yes, we do have a cordless phone, but this does not affect the wifi
access on either laptops or on my Roberts WM-202 internet radio. Indeed
the Roberts hardly even misses a beat.

I have ordered a longer ariel for the netgear router, as the signal
possibly drops as it enters the bedroom. Have to see if that makes a
difference. I will probably update the router firmware soon as well.
I have had the router for about a year and never updated the firmware.
The firmware for the SB classic is the latest 123.

Re: [slim] Connection problems SB classic

Well I have had it hard wired for 2 evenings and it stayed connected all
the time with no problems.
I have upgraded the router's firmware to the latest one, but when
running the SB on wifi it still constantly disconnects every few
minutes.
I just cannot figure out why this happens. My other internet radio
which is set up with the same wifi settings vary rarely misses a beat.
I have tried to reposition the SB which makes no difference.
On the laptop which is in the same room, it shows that the signal is
virtually 100% most of the time.
Any ideas gratefully accepted please.

Maybe there's a hardware problem with the WiFi receiver in your
Squeezebox (i.e. a defective unit). Do you know anyone else who has a
Squeezebox that they could bring over to your place to test and see if
it behaves differently?

Is your laptop showing any other networks near by? Possible WiFi
signal interference with a neighbor?

Thanks for the replies.

I've checked the wifi utility for networks in the neighborhood, and
there are about 5, and as a consequence have changed my channel no.
Will let you know how it goes.

Well, after changing the routers channel no to "1" it stays connected
all the time in any room. So I am hoping that this is the end of my
woes.

Thanks to everyone who replied with help/suggestions.

I did a bit of digging with the search function on SN, and came across
a thread from someone with similar problems, and suggestions included
changing the routers channel no.
