Re: [slim] Easy, stable SC client for Mac?

2009-06-25 Thread tfish77

Hi everybody,

Thank you all for your responses - very helpful. I've been
experimenting with headless Squeezeslave
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeSlave#Mac_OS_X_installation)
and it's working off on. Squeezeplay would really be ideal but at the
moment it's only working in 1 Mac profile and not the other (I've filed
a bug about this but haven't heard back yet).

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks.

Re: [slim] Easy, stable SC client for Mac?

2009-05-09 Thread bephillips

Squeezeslave controlled by the Browser UI is one way to go. Squeezeslave
involves some little work in the Terminal.

If SqueezePlay plays successfully, and you just don't like the
SqueezePlay user interface, you can play through that, and once it's
playing, control it through the Browser UI.

The Browser UI still steers people toward SoftSqueeze because
SqueezePlay isn't official yet, but remember you can control any player
connected to the SqueezeCenter from the Browser UI.

Note that in Mac, SqueezePlay doesn't yet play through the Optical or
USB digital out, only through the analog audio out. (Known bug)

So if you need digital out for any reason, use Squeezeslave, otherwise
you can use Squeezeplay. Conrol either from the Browser UI.

2009-05-09 Thread bklaas

sorry, was a bit confused by your original post that you actually wanted
the audio to output from the PC.

bephillips gave spot on advice. If you don't want digital out, my
expectation is that running squeezeplay is going to be an easier
solution for you. Then you can control the flow of music out the
speakers through either the squeezeplay interface or with the browser
interface.

cheers,

Thanks for replying, Ben. The issue there is that the web interface
launches SoftSqueeze, which is a little too confusing for her - I don't
mean to say that she's dumb, far from it, but it's more that unless

 very intuitive.

I guess intuitive is a key word here.

 Thanks!
You might want to look at Squeezeslave which can be set up on a Mac
such that it starts automatically when you log in and runs as a headless
- basically invisible - player. This means that you use the web
interface and, once having selected squeezeslave as the player, there is
no need to operate a separate player interface - you just select the
tunes, playlists, albums, etc that you want to play, as if you were
sending to a physical player, and off it goes. So it is like what you
have seen with SoftSqueeze but without a visible (and actually
unnecessary) 'player' emulation. There are pretty good installation
instructions at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeSlave#Mac_OS_X_installation.

Of course this assumes that the SC web interface is acceptable as the
way of driving the whole thing

How about using iPeng on an iPod Touch? That looks and feels like
iTunes on the Touch, but operates Squeezecenter running on the Mac
without reference to the (horrible, slow, clunky, ugh) web interface,
or, indeed, any need to touch the Mac at all other than to turn it
on. It's transformed my use of the SB (and I've been using it for a
long time now!)..but then I happen to like the iTunes interface,
too.

@davep: thanks for the idea! I didn't realize SqueezeSlave could run
as a service (not sure if that's the right term for a Mac) on a Mac -
but that sounds like a pretty good solution. The web interface isn't
perfect, but I think it might do the trick. Thank you!

@cunobelinus: thanks, but in this case she's actually using the Mac as
the client, there's no iPod in the house!

For what it's worth, I now think it's worth getting one just for this
purpose. I hadn't intended to do so, but since posts here pointed me
in the direction of iPeng, which I installed on hers, I find myself
constantly borrowing my wife's just to use with the SB and it's
getting a bit unfair! Then there's the SimplifyMedia app.

[slim] Easy, stable SC client for Mac?

2009-05-07 Thread tfish77

My wife recently got a Macbook and I'm trying to help her access my SC
music library. On her old Windows laptop, I had Moose set up with
SqueezeSlave, which worked great. I've tried installing SqueezePlay on
her Mac, but I don't think it's quite ready for prime-time. I'm looking
for something that's as easy to use as Moose is for Windows - she's
pretty computer-savvy, but has a very low tolerance for things that
aren't as easy to use as iTunes in her words.

My own hatred of iTunes aside, can anyone recommend a good solution?
Thank you!
