Is your Slimserver running on Windows or Linux? My library comprises over just over 65K FLAC tracks and I get no patchy responses from Slimserver. Files are hosted on a NAS connected via GB switch and Slimserver resides on a Linux box, which is also my desktop PC. I've noticed very significant differences in library scan times between Slimserver running on Linux and same running on Windows. -- egd Transporter >> SCA2 >> SCM100SLAT via balanced XLR Linux and loving IT! egd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3425 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36443 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Effect of running apps on SlimServer PC
While video production on the PC will peg the CPU and force every other app to wait in line for cycles, there's something more going on with regards to sluggish remote control response. My XP PC is not dedicated to SlimServer, but my CPU usage hovers around 2%, and I still often experience sluggishness with the remote. Ususally when I first turn on the Squeezebox. On a couple of instances, the sluggishness had become pervasive, and the only way I could fix it was by trashing and rebuilding the database. -- jonheal Jon Heal says: Have a nice day! http://www.theheals.org/ ~~~ SB3 (wired - 6.3.1) | Home-brew PC running XP Pro | DENON DRA-395 | PSB Stratus Bronze (2) | Outlaw Audio LFM-2 (1) | DIY Speaker Cables | Dayton Audio Interconnects jonheal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2133 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36443 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The "renice" man page says "The renice command appeared in 4.0BSD." which was released in 1980. Standalone servers always help tho, at the cost of electricity usage. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36443 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I know that song, I thought audio production used up a lot of computer power. As a first step, move your SlimServer to a different computer so your video goes faster and your music plays better. Re: [slim] Effect of running apps on SlimServer PC
Yes, definitely, but... I think even with a fast dedicated server you may notice odd, unexplained 'brain deaths' from SlimServer from time to time. I have a dedicated machine running SlimServer. Nothing fancy, just my old P4 3.0 desktop system with some extra RAM. Doesn't do much else other than act as a file server (with very little, usually no activity) and I still see some long, unexplained hesitations in both the web and remote interfaces. Places where a page sometimes loads in a fraction of a second, at times will take 5-8 seconds. I've begun using the remote interface a bit more in a bedroom system and see the same, inconsistent response speeds there. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36443 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

No question, heavy cpu usage on the sever machine can cause Slimserver to be sluggish. It will be happy with anything over a gigahertz with enough RAM for your OS. Your Squeezebox simply tells Slimserver what infrared code it has seen, and, with very few exceptions (like holding the Power button to reboot the Squeezebox) doesn't take action unless directed by Slimserver. If Slimserver has trouble getting server resources, you'll see sluggish response. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim BlankSaver BottleRocket FuzzyTime SaverSwitcher SleepFade StatusFirst VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36443 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Effect of running apps on SlimServer PC
I've noticed that sometimes my SB is very sluggish in responding to RC commands. Could it be caused by applications running on my server PC? I do a lot of video production - encoding and rendering are resource hogs. Is that a possible cause for the sluggishness? I'm running WinXP Home on a P4 2.66ghz with 768MB ram. Thanks for any insight. BTW, I love my Squeezebox, even when the remote is sluggish. -- venus light venus light's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10916 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36443 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
