Just watch the screen for disconnects as you currently notice, no wires
involved.

I don't use an N router so I'm not sure there is much you can do in
settings changes as obviously your N router is properly using the G
band as well.
Try the simple test of moving the SB3 closer to the router and see if
that resolves the issue, report back and maybe forum members can offer
additional tweaks.

Re: [slim] Help please - can't connect to server

2010-09-29 Thread toby10

A 45% WiFi signal could be a factor. Full computers like your laptop
can handle poor WiFi signals much better than a simple network music
device.

Can you temporarily move the SB3 much closer to the router to see if
that corrects the issue? This will help determine if WiFi is the
problem.

You may be able to boost the routers WiFi signal strength through a few
basic WiFi settings and tweaks in your routers Admin functions.
- set router to only use G mode (I'm assuming you do not have an N
router)
- see what ch's (1 thru 11) are in use around you, choose ch 1 or 6 or
11 that is NOT in use
- reorient router and/or it's antennas for better coverage to the
problem area
- move router closer to problem area

Just throwing out some basics to get started. :)

[slim] Help please - can't connect to server

2010-09-29 Thread andrewhunterjohnston

I have a persistent problem: my SB3 regularly stops (several times per
day), goes blank and then displays the message 'can't connect to
server'. The reconnect (right arrow) command only produces the same
message, so I have to go through the whole (left arrow)'set up
networking' 'obtain IP'etc process every time, which is tiresome and
spoils my enjoyment of the music.
The SB3 is in a bedroom where it gets a 45% signal from the
router/Vortexbox downstairs - and where my laptop works fautlessly, so
I guess it is probsbly not queation of signal strength. Also the Duet
downstairs works perfectly.
What is the problem?
Simple explanations only, please, as I am not an IT expert!

2008-11-15 Thread alZmtbr

A while back, perhaps after an AVG or Zone-Alarm update, the SB3 won't
connect after restarting the PC (XP Pro). My lazy-ass solution is to
restart the Slim service, either by right clicking the tray icon, or
from within services (services.msc). The SB3 then connects right away.
An annoyance for me -- but down right infuriating for the wife...

Is there a command line to start/stop the slim service? I recall that
this was perhaps solved by delaying the starting of the slim service?

[slim] Help Please! Player not found but seen it before??

2008-11-13 Thread pipster1972

Hello to everyone, I'm new here but a big fan of the Squeezebox so far.
Having a few problems though - can you help?

Windows XP - all up to date
BT home hub
Squeezecenter 7.2.1 (I think - latest one anyway)
Squeezebox Classic V3 - latest updates
Zone Alarm - have allowed access in program control
AVG antivirus
Spybot
Music on an external hard drive - mp3

Never a problem getting Squeezenetwork and wifi signal never lower than
60%

I have linked to squeezecenter in the past and played music from my pc
no problem but I am now getting the player not found message and can't
connect from SB. I was typing this message a week ago then just before
I sent it I checked and the bloomin thing had connected.

I have tried re-installing Squeezecenter
I have tried turning off my firewall

Any ideas?

Thanks - I think that probably does help. My intention is to connect my
SB3 to Squeezecenter but I was just setting up the QNAP last night and
wanted to check Squeezecenter was working before having connected a

SqueezeCenter checks for a player if asked to play a track and logs an
error if one is not set-up. Which would seem to be fine. I'll check
tonight. Thanks again.

I think you might have. SqueezeCenter can not playpack music by itself,
only control playback on attached players such as a Squeezebox, Duet
Receiver, Transporter, or software players. SoftSqueeze is a software
player provided by SqueezeCenter. You can find it in the "Extra" menu
in SqueezeCenter. It requires Java to be installed on the machine you
want to her playback on. I.e. not necesarily on the machine running
SqueezeCenter.

In order to use it just fire up the webinterface as you usually do and
to to the Extras menu. It's pretty self-explanatory from there.
Otherwise just ask again.

Hope this helps.

Actually they are not too hard to figure out why. McAfree was probably
putting an extra load on the server that prevented it from streaming the
data in a timely manner to keep the buffer of the SB full.

This could have been either a CPU load or an I/O load on the disk
drive. Most likely an I/O load making difficult for SC to get enough
throughput on the disk. One reason why many have a dedicated server
machine for SC is because timing issues can be problematic.

Re: [slim] Help please - NOT a wireless problem

2008-02-12 Thread PLynas

Hi I am running Windows XP, using MS Internet Explorer.

Wireless network using a BT (UK) Router. Should have said (sorry) I
have 3 Squeezeboxes as follows:

Squeezebox V1, not wireless as such, connected using Homeplug.
Squeezebox V2, wireless, signal strength about 65%
Squeezebox V3, wireless, signal strength about 55%.

I have not tested the two wireless one wired recently, but have had
this setup for a long, long time and the only changes are in the
software, not in the wireless setup. I live in a detached house with
decent grounds so although there is always a chance of wireless
interference, it is minimised in my case.

It is likely that the problem will not occur if I try my squeezebox
wired, but I am guessing that things are just running more slowly for
some reason. I have only just thought really, I have set up the server
with a browser refresh timing of 300 seconds. I have always had it like
this, as it more often than not, means that it will refresh at the start
of each new song. Not sure if something is getting overloaded at the
song start when the browser is refreshing?? Just guessing really.

Thanks for the quick responses.

For an alternative point of view.

What browser are you using ? If you are using Firefox - some Firefox
plugins (esp but not exclusively web development types ) seems to
interact with Firefox resulting in CPU usage of 100% (or 50% in a dual
core system) and very sluggish WebUI.

Can you post a bit of info about your set-up, such as your operating
system, which version of SlimServer/SqueezeCenter you are running, etc?

[slim] Help please - NOT a wireless problem

2008-02-12 Thread PLynas

I am having a problem with my Squeezebox V3, but I would just like to
start by saying that I read these forums regularly and that my problem
is definitely not a problem with my wireless network.

I installed Squeezecenter a couple of weeks ago and was having problems
with the sound dropping out at random points. I would then have to
restart the song or go onto a new one to restore any sound.

Yesterday I decided to load the latest version of Squeezecenter (dated
11th Feb). Now, every single song stutters very badly 9but does not
stop) for the first 20 seconds or so and then plays perfectly
normally.

In addition to this, the Squeezecenter window on my PC cannot keep up
with what is actually playing and is badly out of sync. Also, when I
try to use Squeezecenter it is extremely slow to respond, and this
sometimes applys to my remote control aswell. I do not wish to be one
of the angry posters, but it seems that the performance of my
Squeezeboxes has been going downhill over the last 6 months

I am now at a loss as I have preordered the new controller and am
therefore relying on using Squeezecenter as opposed to Slimserver.

Does anybody have any ideas?? It seems to me that the problem is with
Squeezecenter but I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Are you trying to move files between the QNAP and your desktop? Is the
ftp server the one in the QNAP?

I agree with roamingstudio, can you explain what you're trying to do in
more detail please?

Which ftp programme do you use? If it is command prompt based why not
use mget and mput?

Its not clear where the problem lies - or indeed what your problem
is...

[slim] Help please- bad dropouts on new Mac Pro

2006-10-31 Thread superbad

I just got a Mac Pro, but I am having frequent bad dropouts playing to
my SB1 (every couple seconds on average). It was rock solid on the old
XP box I replaced, so I know the network is fine. I am on the latest
6.5.1 nightly, using iTunes, mostly ALAC files.

Slimserver is pretty much unusable right now, so any help with
debugging would be greatly appreciated. I have no clue where to start.
Almost seems like it's stuttering when I go to use other programs, but
that doesn't make sense since I have four cores.

Re: [slim] Help please I cant get my own Internet Radion stations to play

2006-08-31 Thread Michael Herger

BBC Radio 2
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/radio2/live.shtml

This is a web page containing a real player stream, not a playlist. You
should install AlienBBC on SlimServer to play BBC radio. Search the forums
for a _lot_ of information about that plugin.

and Smooth FM
http://northwest.smoothfm.com/player.asp

Again a web page, not a playlist. Try the following address instead:

http://streaming.gmgradio.com/live/wm_northwest.asx

[slim] Help please I cant get my own Internet Radion stations to play

2006-08-31 Thread Gerry

I am quite new to SB3. My Itunes music plays Ok and so do the preset
internet radio choices in Slimserver. However, I am having problems
adding my own radio station choices.
I have entered the Url's into 'radio tune-in'. They appear in the right
hand Music Player window and indicate the station is 'now playing'.
The SB3 displays the same URL information but no sound I have tried
the URL for both the following
BBC Radio 2
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/radio2/live.shtml
and Smooth FM
http://northwest.smoothfm.com/player.asp

both URL's play directly using the computer
What am I doing wrong?

[slim] Help please with multi-SB integration questions

2006-08-07 Thread FPP

Sanity check requested please!

I’m in the process of finalizing the structured cabling for a new
house that we expect to move in to late Q1 next year.

One of the things I’m wrestling with is how to integrate multiple
SB3s into the system. I’ve pretty much decided to go with Cat 5e/6
cabling throughout, including all video and audio streams.

For each SB, I am contemplating contructing a shoebox-sized enclosure
that will be set into the wall. Coming into the rear will be two Cat 5e
cables plus a power feed. One of the Cat5e cables will c onnect to the
SS machine, the other will carry the audio back to the matrix switch,
and hence via an amp to the speakers.

The two items I’m having trouble finding a solution for:

(a) Ideally I would like to dispense with the wall wart and a 110V feed
in place of a dc feed from the wiring closet. I’d like to know if
anyone has done anything similar and can share advice/experience on
that.

(b) Second, I’d like to use the digital output from the SB, and
connect via an audio balun to a digital amp in the wiring closet.
However I’ve been unable to locate reasonably priced amps with
digital input, of which I’ll need at least five probably six. Can
anyone provide suggestions on this as well? Something like the 'Flying
Mole Cascade'
modular power amp system would be an ideal solution but it only takes
analog inputs.

Thanks in advance.

[slim] Help please...Wake up from Standby on PC

2006-01-08 Thread Robster

Hi all

I'm running Slim 6.2.1 on a pc with XP. My SB3 connects wirelessly to a
Linksys router and the PC linked via cable to the router.

When the pc is in standby I can get the SB3 to wake it up via the
remote but whilst i'm listening the pc will go back into standby as per
the settings allocated in control panel > power options and SB3 will
turn off.

I thought that since Slim was running the pc would not go into standby
but I guess it's based on lack of keyboard/mouse inputs?

Any ideas how I can get the pc to only go into standby when i've
finished listening on turn SB3 off?

thanks

Rob

[slim] HELP PLEASE - SB2 Will not connect to my network anymore

2005-10-27 Thread Mark Gillespie

Hi Everyone,

Can someone please help me? My SB2 will no longer attach to my network.
This all started when I tried setting up my SB2 with my new WAP. After
an hour or so I decided to give up on the new WAP and set the SB2 to
point back at the old one. Now it wont connect to that either. I am
using WPA encrytion and the SB2 will actually connect to the WAP within
about 5 seconds according to the countdown timer on the SB. When trying
to obtain the IP address the countdown timer gets down to 2 or 3 and I
keep getting an IP of 169.254.xxx.xxx when my IP range is
192.168.0.xxx

The only thing that I can think that has changed since I tried setting
up the networking on my SB last is that I have upgraded to SlimServer
6.2 which obviously has upgraded the firmware on the SB2 to v26.

I have another SB2 on my network that I have not messed with yet and
that is still working. At the minute I dont want to try and go through
the network setup just incase the same thing happens

Has anyone got any ideas how I can get this working?

Thanks

Mark
