Re: [slim] How to get started on Windows?

2022-01-17 Thread flyfishing

Picking up on this again. LMS and Squeezelite-X are working to play
music from the Windows Storage Server. I installed the Air Play plug-in
as suggested and it "sees" the Yamaha RX-A3080 as well as the two
multicast speakers, but the Yamaha devices receive no music or other
indication that there is anything attempting to serve them .mp3s or
other music formats.

Is there anyone on this forum who has successfully connected LMS to a
Yamaha Music Cast device?

Some additional info:

LMS and the music files do not have to be on the same box (although they
can be). The music files simply have to be accessible somewhere within
your network. Also, LMS only scans the folders that you tell it to scan
(see below).

I previously had my music files on a shared network drive and I now have
them on a NAS. I have LMS on a Raspberry Pi running Max2Play -
https://www.max2play.com/ . You could also run it on any of your
Windows computers (maybe even your Windows Home Server).

Squeezelite (or Squeezelite-x) would go on any of your computers that
you want to play music on (whether or not they have LMS installed).

It looks like MusicCast supports Airplay so you could use philippe_44's
AirPlay Bridge plug-in to stream your music to your Yamaha. Philippe_44
also wrote plug-ins for Chromecast players (CastBridge) and UPnP/DLNA
players (UPnPbridge).

One little addition to P Nelsons reply. Squeezelite-x can run on the
same PC that you install LMS on and will play through your PC speakers.

Main system - Rock Solid with LMS 8.2.0 on WHS 2011 - 2 Duets and
Squeeseslave
Cabin system - Rock solid with LMS 8.2.0 on Win10 Pro - 1 RPi 3 Model
B/Hifiberry DAC+ Pro/PiCorePlayer and Squeezeslave
Squeezebox Boom - "At Large" player around both home and cabin
Headphones and car - Android phone/Bluetooth w/full library on MicroSD
card - PowerAmp music player app (similar to Material Skin)

Re: [slim] How to get started on Windows?

2021-11-27 Thread P Nelson

I agree the jargon can be a problem if you have not been following the
forum and using the products. Since your new to Logitech media server
(LMS) and squeezebox system, a high level overview might be helpful.
First, LMS is the music server which handles delivering music files
(from your own library or internet streaming) to squeezebox devices.
Second, is the squeezebox devices as the Radio, Touch, Transporter,
etc., or a device running squeezelite. Except for the Radio and Boom,
the second device will transmit analog or digital output to your stereo.
In other words you need both LMS and a second device to play music on
an audio system.

LMS can run on a windows 10, Mac, or Linux. If you don’t have a
Logitech physical equipment ( Radio, Touch, etc.) is where squeezelite
is used. You can run squeezelite on a windows machine to listen to
music on the computer.

Finally, there is picoreplayer (PCP) which runs on a raspberry pi and is
able to run both the LMS server and a player (squeezelite) to deliver
analog or digital output to your audio system.
See https://www.picoreplayer.org/. The PCP option is nice because the
system can be run on a tiny standalone pi which does not require the
overhead of running a windows10 computer. I use pcp to run LMS and I
followed the instructions on the website and I don’t know Linux.

You mentioned Yamaha Music-cast, when I looked at the website it appears
it offer similar functions as LMS. It mentioned the internet music
services, but it did not mention if you can play your own music library.

Some more detail of what you want to do and what physical equipment you
have would help others on the forum give you more detailed suggestions.

Jivelite is a graphical software used by those with the technical skills
to build their own Touch. I have not used it.

Thanks to both of you. Very helpful. On my network I have a third
generation Windows Home Server, officially known as Windows Storage
Server. It runs on an HP Microserver with a very light CPU (either a
ARM or a Celeron), and 2 GB RAM. I also have my desktop and several
older systems with i5 CPU's and SSD drives, and 8 GB RAM. I can run XP,
7 or 10 on these, or 8 if I must.

The music files are stored on the Storage Server.

I'm guessing all the music files need to be on the same box as the LMS
or in a shared folder accessible to the LMS. If not like that, then
how? If so, where does Squeezelite go? Or is there a better way, while
staying in Windows?

If I have files I don't want LMS to "see" or catalog, or list, such as
all the non-music "music" like hip-hop/rap that children want to store,
how can I isolate them, as it appears LMS will scan anything it can
find. Or will it not bother with root shares which in windows are C$
etc.

Thanks again for any assistance.

LMS should work with yamaha musicast if the Yamaha has upnp/DLNA
features. It works with my yamaha wxad 10. You need to install the
upnp bridge plugin.

As you're using Win 10, I'd go for Squeezellite-X.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/squeezelite-x/9pbhmtnp9037?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

This is a player and controller, will control all your future Squeezebox
players. :)

[slim] How to get started on Windows?

2021-11-26 Thread flyfishing

Newbie here. Please be gentle.

The LMS family of media streaming was suggested to me by someone with
years of experience with it. However, he is unable to help. There have
been so many new or discontinued products in this arena and there is so
much "jargon" that I can't seem to get out of a circular loop.

My experience is with Windows, (and before that DOS from V2 to V6). No
experience with 'nix variants except for some highly scripted and
overlayed products such as routers or firewalls.

I ran the LMS installer on Windows 10 and followed up with soft-squeeze
which would not connect. The instructions to edit some variables did
not seem to apply to Windows 10 as I could not find the referenced files
in Users\user-name\etc. Then I saw this in the help:

SoftSqueeze emulates Squeezebox and Transporter on Windows, Mac OSX and
Unix Computers.

Since Server 7.4 SoftSqueeze is replaced by SqueezePlay

Meanwhile SqueezePlay isn't shipped the the standard installation
anymore.

There are some Squeeze Software Emulations out there eg. the ones that
Ralph Irving maintains.

Name: Description:Link to our Forum:
JiveliteGraphical Frontend without Playerfunctionality. Link
Squeezelite Commandline Player without Frontend.Link
SqueezePlay Graphical Frontend with Playerfunctionality.Windows

which seems to say that soft-squeeze will not work with the current
version download.

Is there anywhere I can go to find a step by step to make LMS work with
just the standard speakers on the pc it is installed on as a first step?
Then further instructions on how to make it work over the network to
speakers on other systems, and finally to make it work on such as Yamaha
Music-cast.

Thanks for any assistance.
