Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

2008-08-28 Thread Paul Webster

The press release has made its way to a few places now.
Pretty well everyone using the same 2 pictures (i.e. from a press pack)
- although the one I found for my blog includes the
mini-magnetic-remote.
http://dabdig.blogspot.com

FREMONT, Calif. – Aug. 28, 2008 — Today, Logitech (SWX: LOGN) (NASDAQ:
LOGI) unveiled the Logitech® Squeezebox™ Boom all-in-one network music
player, featuring an integrated amplifier, high-performance speakers
and a simplified setup. Now, it’s easier than ever before to bring
digital music to any room in your home.

“The network music player will be the CD player of the 21st century,
and Squeezebox Boom is the first player in its class to deliver
high-quality audio in a compact, all-in-one design,” said Robin Selden,
vice president and general manager of Logitech’s Streaming Media
business unit. “From the streamlined setup to the breakthrough
acoustics, the Squeezebox Boom is an entirely new type of network music
player. Just plug it in and you’re ready to rock the house.”

No Additional Audio Gear, Wires Needed
With the Logitech Squeezebox Boom all-in-one network music player, you
can listen to your digital music in the kitchen, the bedroom or any
other room in your home – without needing to attach external speakers.
Just plug the new Logitech network music player into a power outlet –
there are no additional wires to connect. Then, using your existing
home network, you can listen to the music you love from the personal
collection on your computer, your favorite Internet radio stations, and
subscription services such as Rhapsody®, Last.FM, Slacker, Pandora® and
Sirius – even when the computer is off.

Adding Squeezebox Boom to your network is simple. The new Logitech
player will automatically detect the available networks. Once you
select your network, simply enter your password – for your convenience,
Squeezebox Boom automatically remembers it for future use.

For different music in another room of your home, you can easily expand
your Squeezebox network music system. Simply add additional Squeezebox
Boom players in any room you like or, if you already have an existing
stereo system, add another player from the Squeezebox family to your
network music setup, including the Logitech® Squeezebox™ Duet network
music system.

Listen to Thousands of Internet Radio Stations on High-Performance
Speakers
Upon registering your Squeezebox Boom network music player, you can
access thousands of radio stations and millions of songs, aggregated by
SqueezeNetwork™ – Logitech’s free, online service – without having to
remember Internet addresses or passwords. So you enjoy an optimized
wireless-network speed and a secure connection, Squeezebox Boom uses
true 802.11g wireless technology and dual internal antennas.

To fill your room with sound, the Squeezebox Boom network music player
offers an integrated, all-digital 30-watt amplifier accompanied by two
¾-inch, high-definition, soft-dome tweeters and two 3-inch, high-power,
long-throw woofers. A bi-amplified design – which includes a
high-performance signal processor, class-D amplifier and digital
crossover – delivers crystal clear sound with minimal noise and
distortion. For bass lovers, the Squeezebox Boom even includes a
subwoofer connection. And if you want to listen to music in private,
the 3.5 mm jack lets you plug in your headphones.

The Logitech Squeezebox Boom network music player works as an alarm
clock and can wake you up to your favorite tunes. Six preset buttons,
located under the display, make it easy to get to your favorite song,
Internet radio station or playlist.

The included remote control gives you control of the Squeezebox Boom
from across the room. And the remote includes a tiny magnet that lets
you easily attach it to the top of the Squeezebox Boom or, for example,
your refrigerator.

The Squeezebox Family
The new Squeezebox Boom is part of the Squeezebox family of products,
which includes the award-winning Logitech Squeezebox Duet network music
system, Logitech® Squeezebox™ network music player, as well as the
audiophiles’ choice, the Logitech® Transporter™ network music player.

Pricing and Availability
The Logitech Squeezebox Boom network music player is expected to be
available in the U.S. and Europe beginning in September for a suggested
retail price of $299.99 (U.S.).

The SB3 has been '$229 at Amazon.com' (http://snurl.com/amazonsqueeze)
for almost a month now...I wonder if they were anticipating this?
Nonetheless, great question as to whether the MSRP on the SB3 will go
down.

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

2008-08-28 Thread Mark Lanctot

OK, well, seeing as the main web page contains the product now, there's
an official announcement thread and this speculation thread contains
some inaccuracies, here are some FACTS:

- the units have an RTC (real-time clock) which maintains time even
when it loses contact with the server. So yes, you can stop your
server and Boom will still display the time. It'll even play alarms
(currently firmware-generated tones) when the server is offline.

- there is a sleep button on the top, which isn't readily apparent from
photos.

- player-side, the unit is an SB3 except for the audio circuitry. This
includes all networking (i.e. it's 802.11g and has an Ethernet port).
It should be capable of bridging as well. The wi-fi antennas are at
least as good as an SB3, almost as good as an SB2.

- it has a smaller display than the SB3

- no digital outs, although there is an analog line out.

- the line out is not compatible with IR Blaster. This isn't critical
since Boom was designed to be a standalone unit and not integrated into
a stereo system.

- there is a line in

- the line out is configurable between headphone out (full-range) and
sub out (with an internal crossover)

- there's a state-of-the-art DSP inside which handles all the advanced
crossover functions and tone controls. It has lots of untapped
potential.

- it can be mounted on a wall or under a cabinet, there is a bracket
coming. Above the rear connectors are threaded inserts for this use.

- the VFD auto-dims with a light sensor, so it's perfect as an alarm
clock for bedroom use, and the display circuitry is designed to go dim
enough for use in a dark room.

- the knob does not have feedback like the Transporter knob, but it's
very nice to use - nice detents, good feel, easy to control.

- IR codes are the same as for the SB3

- oh and for people who judge things based on weight, it's quite heavy
for its size.

I know this because there was a beta test program just like there was
for the Controller, and the beta testers have had these since April or
so.

Basically this is a standalone player that is also a great alarm clock.
It is -not- a portable player (i.e. it won't run on batteries*) but as
it's self-contained, it can be carried to wherever you have wireless
networking access.

Most important of all, I can say that Boom sounds FANTASTIC for its
size. There's quite a bit of work in the DSP to get it sounding as
good as it does, especially with bass performance. It will go down to
50 Hz with ease, and this is with 3 woofers!

Have at it!

* oh I suppose you could do something with those power tool
batteries... :-)

I heard the A2s only briefly in a shop. I never owned them.

But I would be very surprised if they sounded better than Boom.
Seriously. Since Boom's woofers and tweeters are of a known design and
performance and since the whole thing is powered by a DSP there was some
intensive tuning going on. Simply put, Boom was built around its
speakers.

The DSP was tweaked for the exact speakers that Boom uses and can do
some amazing things with them. External speakers don't have that
advantage.

This is not to say the A2s are poor - far from it.

I have the A2's, the Boom sounds better, particularly in the bass. One
thing the A2s have going for them is seperation (as they can obviously
be moved further apart) but the StereoXL processing on the Boom does a
pretty good job of widening the soundstage.

Well... actually this is dutch, not german. But dutch sounds a little

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

2008-08-26 Thread Michaelwagner

Yes, guys, I knew it was Dutch. That's why I said I speak German, but I
can puzzle this out. If it was German, I wouldn't have put the
disclaimer in.

If you speak English, French German (I do), then you can puzzle out
most Dutch words by recognizing their roots. I don't get the grammar
worth a damn, and it's harder to understand the spoken words for me,
but even that I can do at times.

In any case, the important point, which seems to have been missed, is
that the list of places you can have it shipped to is null. So I don't
think you could actually buy it. It happily let me order it, even
though I live in Canada, but I'm sure this would have failed somehow in
checkout.

Well, the intent is the same, but no, a closer translation would be

Which is effectively what it was saying yesterday when it told me the

hahaha!

I reckon this is a cracking product. Fingers cross it's a) true b) fast
and c) distributed internationally. (We're still waiting on Duet in
India) - even purchasing a new SB3 involved a trip to the distributers
home, chai, phone calls, delivery on a bicycle.

One never complains when the final result is satisfactory. The whole
experience was rather pleasant in the end. The distributor's notions of
what the SB actually does were rather amusing. Why don't you have an
iPod, he wondered. Does the same thing.

Posted this on another thread first by a mistake...:

This is from a Norwegian webshop...

http://www.expert.no/product/product.aspx?identifier=93063

It says not in stock on the page, but the price in NOK seems to be
decided... (NOK 2300 is €290 by todays exchange rate).
Can't seem to find it in any other norwegian shops yet, but it has to
be just around the corner.

Doesn't seem to be able to run on batteries, though, but rumours says
it is wall-wart-powered... So a suitable NiCd-pack should be able to
provide juice for a few hours, anyway... B-)

Perhaps. Personally, I find that, while Slim was very american in some
ways (mostly the good ways), I've stuck with them because they're very
unamerican in other ways.

Good ways that they are american:
* entrepreneurship: company was started more or less in a garage with a
wire-wrapped prototype (the sliMP3).

Good ways that they are not american:
* open source
* open box - they always snap pictures and post them, showing us what's
inside the box so we don't have to disassemble them - although I did
disassemble my SB1s and SB3s - haven't opened up a Duet receiver yet.
* open forums, open to suggestions about improvements
* sense of humour - announcements that turn out to be april fools
jokes.

I wouldn't personally use it this way, but I can see someone wanting to
ditch a lousy old alarm clock, and then replace an existing SB3
connected to a bedroom audio system with the SB Boom.

But then again, this might simply encourage those of us Americans prone

clocks. Perhaps Logitech shouldn't offer this product at all...

Let's hope Logitech does the right thing.

They haven't until now. I used an Internet radio station as an alarm

The more observant (read: bored) of you may have noticed the following
entry in the release notes for 7.2...

#8959 - Local Control when SqueezeCenter/Network Down

It's a locked entry, but it sounds suspiciously like the functionality
needed to allow an alarm clock to run independantly of the server.

Very true. Although the Controller was a huge step up in complexity
from any of the previous products, so the open discussion and beta
testing was invaluabl as far as i can tell. It's the fatest device
they have built, running a full linux OS with the SqueezeOS interface
on top. Quite a bit different from the embeded nature of the other
devices. Also, the Reciever wasn't spoken about until the official
release either.

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

2008-08-18 Thread oreillymj

I really hope the speakers in this are shielded from mobile phone
interference.

I made the major mistake of buying this http://tinyurl.com/5m48vg

Since I do on-call from work, I need to keep a mobile phone on the
bedside locker, but cannot leave it anywhere near the JBL on-time or
else I get a blast of the mobile's phone home chatter in the middle
of the night amplified through the JBL speaker. I have to put the phone
on the other side of the room.

Also the alarm function plays the first song on the iPod. Waking up to
ABBA every morning is not a good way to start the day.

So this looks very tempting.

It's typical Logitech IMO, it's neither attractive or not attractive -
a little minimal, functional and dare i say 'bland' (bit nt in a really
bad way)- the safer option i guess. Being logitech, i can just tell
already what the plastics will feel like. But it's perfectly fine for
me, i hate show piece designs that no matter how much i like them at

Possibly, though I've seen decent component systems with the speakers
positioned in the worst possible locations for sound quality. I'm
thinking in the context of the iPod dock systems that are starting to
replace the traditional stereo. The Boom would be competing with
those.

I think that depends on how its marketed. As I mentioned in an earlier
post, I think this should be sold as an internet clock radio that -by
default- hooks up to SqueezeNetwork. No setting up required, other than
entering your wireless details (a task that doesn't seem to phase
Wii-owners). Then you have -the option- of installing your own
SqueezeCenter to access your digital music collection.

SD devices have historically been marketed the other way round, but
here I think they need to take a different stance.

It wouldn't make a good 'phone socket if it doesn't support full range
stereo. ;-) I don't expect there to be some clever electronics in
there, that can determine whether there are headphones or a sub
attached - I expect it will assume any attached sub will handle its own
crossover. Alternatively, there'll be a setting in the UI that allows
you to specify what's attached.

Delighted to see this; it looks great from the pictures available so
far... And given that I voted 'Yes' in the old 'Would you buy a SB
Boombox? poll, I suppose I have a moral obligation to order one as
soon as they're available - how unfortunate ;)

...why they called it a Boom and not a Radio. It's really not like a
boom box in the traditional sense of the word. No handle or
batteries...

I'm also wondering why Amazon has it on their site, but Logitech still
doesn't.

So much mystery :-)

My guess is that as Amazon etc have jumped the gun, the marketing boys
at SD/Logi were not quite ready. They are now scrabbling to get it
altogether and should 'launch' very soon. But it's starting to look a
bit silly.

I hope so too. The A2's were created with the SB3 in mind. If anything,
it would be a shame to see AudioEngine lose sales of their excellent
speakers. I'd certainly like to hear how they compare. The existence of
a subwoover connector is interesting - it suggests the built-in speakers
might not appease the bass-heads (which doesn't worry me in the
slightest).

The manual says it will have a backup alarm tone, which indicates to me
that it won't be music. The Boom will be a little less slim in that it
can manage it's own time as well as alarm. Hopefully it can use a
standard alarm tone and when you hit snooze the music kicks in. Some
of my music certainly won't wake me up!!!
If they're bringing this into the firmware for the Boom, I wonder if
it'll make its way into the other products too? Maybe this is the
'Secret Bonus feature'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50804) mentioned in
the wiki!

The sub out feature could be significant in allowing the Boom to be
upgraded to a killer full-range system capable of peeling paint off the
walls. A lot depends on the quality of the built-in drivers. This is
the first time Slim has done any amp-speaker design, so I'm anxious to
see/hear what they've come up with. With T-amps, biamping,
sound-shaping tailored to each driver's characteristics, etc., it's
possible to get very good sound quality in a compact design.

If you want a killer full-range system a Boombox would seem a poor
starting point. Better perhaps to get an SB3/Transporter and add your
chosen amp and speakers.

Slim may not have, but Logitech have been designing amps and speakers
for quite a while...

Might be because marketing surveys said not to. Or maybe because it
doesn't appear to have a Tuner in it so why make the same mistake the
Telecomunications Industry did by calling it something it is not (Cell
Phone was the worse name possible for a device that is a full duplex
transceiver that can only access POTS {Plain Old Telephone Service} by
connecting with a base station tower). From what I have been able to
read about the Boom, it is not a Radio and has no tuner. Can it stream
music from the Internet, it appears it can, but again this in not being
a Radio.

Maybe it was a description of this new product. Hey this Sqeezebox
actually makes sound on its own! then Chef Emeril Legasse said, Boom
instead of Bam!

And as a parting thought, do we even know if that is the Official
name of an unreleased future product. Remember the Jive?

Re: [slim] Logitech Squeezebox Boom?

I asked a friend of mine who works for a national newspaper here in
Switzerland to ask Logitech about the boom.

They refused to comment, but they did say that they will be presenting
their Autunm collection on the 20th of August to the press in Zurich
Switzerland... That's only 9 days away ... but again .. if it's
anything like the duet launch it will take another 4 months to be
availible..

called: Squeezebox Boom
