Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
Hi everyone, I have a DS Lite and considering purchasing the Web Browser software. Apart from wanting to access the internet, I'd also like a quick and dirty way of creating simple quizzes for my kids. I'm wondering: 1/ What javascript support comes with the browser? If I had my questions as jpegs / GIF images, I'm assuming the browser would support tags to display these? I could then create a simple HTML file. 2/ Could I somehow incorporate the handwriting recognition capabilities using javascript? It would be great if the question is displayed (e.g. as a jpeg as above) on one screen and a box appears on the other, into which the answer can be written using the stylus. Could something like the tag be used? Or could a special DS Lite handwriting recognition routine/service be invoked by the javascript? Any comments / suggestions gratefully received! Thanks in advance, Lisa. -- lnic999 lnic999's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21195 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
I agree with zingerhill and thing-fish: slow, but just about usable with handheld skin. The DS has a very nice toggle between Overview (1 screen shows a zoomed in view of the other) and SSR (Small Screen Rendering) which is useful. However, the nature of the SlimServer / SqueezeCenter interface is there's a lot to display and it means you will have to scroll around quite a lot. One of the problems is the add-on cartridge which fits in the GBA slot only contains 10MB of RAM - you constantly have to let the DS Browser clear its cache. I'm waiting for the Duet Controller... P.S. Methane: if you're interested - Hotmail will not work. -- ShadowWar ShadowWar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8102 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

lucas72;271191 Wrote: > Any news about this?! I just got a DS-Lite :D Check out zingerhill's review above. As excited as I was, the way Nintendo implemented the Opera browser makes it pretty much a no-go for pick-up-and-go use the way you'd want it for squeezebox control. I used it at a party one time, where I had the DS outside with me. It was about a 90 second process to turn the DS on, have it wake up, reconnect to the network, re-load the latest version of the server's page, and then finally click the button to change the volume or the track. -- thing-fish ' Most Recent Tracks' (http://www.last.fm/user/thing-fish/?chartstyle=basicrt10) thing-fish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
Hopefully this review doesn't end the discussion or attemps at developing a feasible DS remote. This would be a huge addition, since the only complaint I can see with the SB3 is lack of a great visual interface. The LED is nice, but if you just want to browse through your collection it is not so slick. Would developing a DS specific skin help browsing speed? Could you load the browsing software from a GBA cartridge? This would reduce the need to switch out cartridges for gaming. -- bruceleecc bruceleecc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13122 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
I've had a chance to use this thing for about a week now so here are some thoughts: 1. You should think of this as a good WAP phone browser. It really pales in comparison to any computer browser or even the Wii browser. It is very slow to render pages and has a lot of problems with complex sites. The PSP browser is better at rendering pages. I actually think the browser in my phone is faster (LG VX8600). Although, I think it claims to be able to do flash, but I haven't gotten it to work. 2. It's a real pain to have to insert a cartridge to browse the web. I know this is the nature of the beast, but I tend to play one game at a time. Having to bring the separate browser cart makes it less useful. I probably should have thought about this first. 3. The navigation with the touch screen works pretty well. Touching links and zooming is pretty cool. 4. It does a pretty good job with the handheld skin for SlimServer. It's a little slow, but definitely does the job. This is why I got it, so it's definitely a plus. Bottom Line Is it worth $30? It depends on what you are using it for. I bought it to use as a remote for the slim server. It works ok, but having to insert a cartridge every time I want to use it is much more of a problem than I thought it would be. Try the web browser on your phone. If you want something a little bit better this might be for you. I may end up selling it. It's neat to play with for a while, but I think it really shows the technical limitations of the DS. PS- To the person asking about gmail and flickr, I used the mobile versions of these sites and it worked well. The regular versions, in my opinion, are not usable. -- zingerhill zingerhill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11041 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
Ordered one today from Newegg. Both my kids have ds lites. Should have it by weekend. Will report back when it comes in on how it does as a slimserver remote. Looks pretty interesting: here is a link to the opera site which has some screen shots--actually allows you to combine both screens. Re: [slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
I just bought the DS Browser for $30. I bought it primarily to use as a SqueezeBox remote. I tried it at the office and it worked pretty well. The stylus makes it much easier to use than the PSP browser. Can't wait to give it a shot with SlimServer. Has anyone else tried this and found a skin that works well? -- zingerhill zingerhill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11041 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Nintendo DS Lite Browser as Interface
Hi, It strikes me that the DS Lite's Opera based browser and touchscreen could be a great, cheap control for Slimserver. Has anyone tried it. Another idea is a 'fat client' that is made available as a 'game' cartridge for Slimserver remote control. These could help compete with the Sonos controller. -- anwars anwars's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6759 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26107 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
