IE *does* refresh if you use the Fishbone interface.

It takes a bit of gettig used to, but does have some useful advantages
over the standard interface (notwithstanding the fact that it
refreshes!).

With respect to the original poster's question, where IE would not
refresh: if you have some reluctance to try 6.5.1, why not try a
different browser? Firefox seems to refresh fine.

Not sure I understand the reluctance to try 6.5.1 ... the time to
download, install and try out isn't very long: there is a good chance
it will fix a bug that's annoying you: and you can easily go back if it
 introduces something you don't like.

Its still a pain in the ass: uninstall the current Slimserver, download
the latest build, install it (and pray to God it works), if it works,
download the plugins, install them, reconfigure everything... I tried
to install 6.5.1 a while back and it was a disaster. So I returned to
6.5.0.

There's no need to uninstall if you're staying within a minor version. And
absolutely no need to re-download the plugins. My disk is large enough to
keep that few kb in my download folder. You can heavily influence the
level of pain you're experiencing :-)

it will fix a bug that's annoying you: and you can easily go back if it

Being released doesn't mean its been magically annointed with
anti-bug pixie dust, it just means its been through a formal test
-and-release cycle. And while this is undoubtedly valuable, the
testing is certainly not as comprehensive as the testing that's going
on in the hundreds (?) of live systems that are using it every day. If
there is a lurking bug waiting to bite you that is still unknown and
unreported, it will therefore probably still be there when release
happens!

And you can be confident that no-one at slim is going to tell you its
unsupported if you report a problem with 6.5.1 (which makes it
entirely different from 7.0 at the moment - anyone trying that out is
definitely on their own).

The main risk as I see it of picking up a nightly is that there is a
chance that a silly bug has crept in to that particular nightly
(something blatant like a bunch of files missing) which is always fixed
immediately. If you're unlucky enough to get one of those, go back and
get another one.

YMMV

Then why not just run it through a formal cycle and release it so that

it is reasonably up-to-date with respect to bug fixes? Many of us here

this forum do not.

Bottom line -- why does slim feel that 6.5.1 is *not* ready to go
through the formal testing/release cycle at this time?

Well, I'd rather they spent time fixing bugs and adding capability than
in formal release cycles every month, say (which would be very
expensive).

As for non-forum users ... well, if they're being troubled by a problem
they can come here and find out about it, or they can call/email support
who will presumeably suggest 6.5.1 if it seems relevant.

 Ceejay

I agree that formal release every month doesn't make sense, but 6.5.0
in my opinion was rushed due to a major hardware release; it has *many*
issues and is crying for a formal maintenance update. More importantly,
there is also a cost in distributing and maintaining a daily release.
At some point the 6.5.1 development process will stop; I'm just
wondering when that might be.

I'm simply asking for some insight into what Slim's criteria for the
6.5.1 (or any) release are and when *they* feel the release is ready.
As kdf said, who says the current nightly isn't the one -- but *no one
knows*.

Can someone from Slim please comment?

Thanks!

This reminds me of that famous Onion article:

God Answers Prayers Of Paralyzed Little Boy
  'No,' Says God

  December 9, 1998 | Issue 34.19

SAN FRANCISCO–For as long as he can remember, 7-year-old Timmy Yu has
had one precious dream: From the bottom of his heart, he has hoped
against hope that God would someday hear his prayer to walk again.
Though many thought Timmy's heavenly plea would never be answered, his
dream finally came true Monday, when the Lord personally responded to
the wheelchair-bound boy's prayer with a resounding no.

Ummm .. no. The development process never stops (we hope!). The
nightlies go on more or less uninterrupted. When 6.5.1 is finally
released, I'd expect a new nightly stream to start more or less
straight away - perhaps labelled 6.5.2, or 6.6, depending on how the
plan is looking at the time. There always has to be *somewhere* to put
the fixes and minor enhancements.

That's in addition to the more radical new version 7.0, of course,
which continues in parallel... this is at the moment not at all stable
and not to be touched by mere mortals unless feeling very brave indeed,
though at some point it will be declared a beta and we will be invited
to try it out.

The incremental cost of these nightlies is trivial - just the cost of
maintaining the servers - and not in the slightest like the cost of
doing a formal test and release cycle.

This principle of continuing parallel development of the safe nightly
(6.5.1 at the moment) and the potentially unstable (7.0) is a great
strength of the slimserver/open source development model and is not to
be fiddled with lightly...

At this point I really think it's stable enough that you should give it
a shot.

Sorry but I don't have an ETA for the official release.

Anyone know of an approximate ETA for 6.5.1?

If you look at other postings and bugzilla, there's an impending
firmware release (71) that is being internally tested that you may want
to wait for. I've also been asking about an official 6.5.1 release date
in the beta forum for quite some time; the replies have been mainly It
will be ready when it's ready. I do think that 3 months for a
third-level dot release is a little long; but more frustrating is the
lack of information about what is holding up the release (other than
what can be gleaned via Bugzilla) and what particular bugs they feel
they must be fixed prior to release.

Though there are differing opinions on the matter, I feel that getting
a reasonable 6.5.1 out there sooner for reviewers and the general
public to feel better about the product makes sense, following up with
a 6.5.2 or whatever to finish up.
