Slimserver used to run comfortably on a number of NAS models out there, but as the software's gotten bigger (especially with the switch to mysql as the db backend in 6.5), it's starting to really push the limits of many of them. If you have the flexibility to put in a real server computer, I'd do so. - Marc ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I agree that this seems like a bizarre statement and can only assume that Jim meant that SB's aren't really ideal for use as sources in traditional, centralized whole-house audio systems. I did not know they weren't for whole house audio! I have 6 SlimP3s, 1 SB1, 2 SB2s, and 4 SB3s and I usually run at least 5 or 6 in synch. I often run 3 different programs on 3 different sets of synched players. They are all wired units and I have never had any issues. -- upstatemike upstatemike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6409 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30663 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Eh? I think they work quite well for whole-house audio. Much more elegant than running speaker wire all over the place. And each room has full control without running a separate control connection and wall panel. 7 SBs off 1 server would work fine, especially if the majority of them were wired. I would probably dedicate a cheap Dell to the server task, to be certain there's enough horsepower. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30663 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Actually I have no NAS in mind yet... It was only a idea to use Squeezeboxes and NAS. So with wired boxes and for example the NAS Slim Devices offers as a bundle - it won't work? There are two families living in the house so a multiroom system would not be an option. If she's building a new house, have all the rooms wired with multiple runs of Cat6 cabling. I'd also put in more traditional whole house audio wiring in case the Squeezebox idea doesn't work out. Then forget the "NAS" idea and locate a small server computer in the basement near the low voltage wiring junction. With wired SBs and a server of sufficient power you could run a couple dozen Squeezeboxes. But Squeezeboxes really aren't designed for whole house audio, IMO. You can do it, but depending on the design, it can be expensive or else require bizarre wiring schemes. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30663 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Generally the problem you run into is wireless bandwidth, not CPU. 3-4 wireless Squeezeboxes is pushing it a bit, but a good 802.11g network with decent signal strength ought to be able to handle even FLAC. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30663 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
