[slim] Re: Linksys WRT54G + DD-WRT 23 SP1 + SB3
I am running a wrt54GL on DD-WRT 23 SP1 too. Everything is just fine , security being WPA2. When I disable SSID broadcast my SB3 starts to stumble and then loses connection. My other SB connected to an Airport express plays fine with SSID broadcast disabled. [slim] Re: Linksys WRT54G + DD-WRT 23 SP1 + SB3
Disabling SSID has been hit and miss for me with the SB3. The way I find that works: - enable SSID, find it and connect - once connected, disable SSID The Squeezebox should still find the AP without you having to do anything. I find that disabling SSID at the start, then entering it in and having it look for it didn't always work. Of course, disabling SSID won't help with security and just serves to break things. The SSID is broadcast using more than one mechanism, you're just disabling the most obvious one. If someone wants your SSID, they can still find it without too much trouble. It's sent unencrypted using several methods even with SSID broadcast disabled and WPA or WPA2 encryption. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25691 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Version 24 sounds outstanding...having a single wireless router pushing out two different SSIDs on different channels is brilliant. BTW I'm not so sure 24 will be able to use different channels for the different SSIDs. There's only one radio module, it can't operate at two frequencies simultaneously. I believe it creates different virtual wireless networks with different SSIDs. They work on the same channel. I believe this is how the Sveasoft firmware works to do that trick as well. Sounds like you're happy with how the linksys hacking went? Any major gotchas? Are you boosting your signal? This must just be the thing for Slim-owners to do this week. I just picked up a WRT54G v1 from my local Freecycle group. The owner said it stoped working, so I picked it up for free. After just a few minutes of testing it turned out it was a bad wall-wart. Amazingly, the power supply from an extra Slimp3 I had was an exact match (voltage, amps and tip size). I installed the generic DD-WRT v23 SP1 Final (05/30/06) mini and could not be happier with it. The only problem I had was the the router had the original v.1.01 Linksys firmware on it from 2003, and the update to DD-WRT didn't work. I flashed it with the newest Linksys firmware (I think it was 4.something) and then applied the DD-WRT flash without incident. I have to say, I was amazed with all the options that this opened. I also could not resist the urge to boost the signal. I pushed it up to 70 and I now have good coverage of my entire house and most of my yard, something no other router has managed. --Tom Malsbury -- malsbury malsbury's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25691 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You're right, I'm not sure what the Samba server is for. You could store a file in memory in the unit and serve it to your network that way, but you only have 16 MB and that has to house the OS as well. It could very possibly run SS. [slim] Re: Linksys WRT54G + DD-WRT 23 SP1 + SB3
bklaas Wrote: Sounds like you're happy with how the linksys hacking went? Any major gotchas? Are you boosting your signal? Boosting the signal was why I went to DD-WRT in the first place. Turns out it's maybe not the best thing to do - causes overheating and can shorten the life of the radio module. Better to get a high-gain antenna. But DD-WRT and the router is working so well now there's really no need for me to boost the signal. The hacking from initial Linksys firmware was not without its issues. I thought I had bricked it - flashing power light, no web UI anymore, etc. Multiple panicked instances of pushing a pen into the reset button on the back, holding for 5 seconds to reset to default, and power-cycling while holding the button in. Once it settled down, it ran flawlessly and remained up until a power failure. Hundreds of days of uptime. The upgrade to SP1 surprised me - no reset required. Just wait for the unit to reboot and I was right back up. The customizations possible with the router's features are mind-boggling and expanded even further with SP1. In addition to the standard router things, you can do things like: - overclock the router's processor (new in SP1) - limit the number of wireless clients - convert the router to client (WAN on wireless), client-bridged (WAP) or ad-hoc mode - use WDS - adjust ACK timing (new in SP1) - act as a RADIUS server - adjust esoteric wireless settings like frame bursting, beacon interval, DTIM interval, fragmentation threshold, RTS threshold, etc. - assign one antenna to transmit, the other to receive - QoS - use it as a Samba server - use it to send WOL packets to certain clients - perform a wireless site survey (finds other APs in range and can join their network) - MAC OUI lookup (new in SP1) to determine the wireless card manufacturer of any connected device - (OT) convert it to a hotspot using Sputnik or Chillispot And much more. There are hundreds of settings. The only thing I had to play with to get it working properly was set maximum ports to 3072, TCP and UDP timeout to 120 seconds. Otherwise the web GUI became unresponsive? About the only thing that needs work is the firewall. My old SMC 2804WBRP-G had this beat easily. However DD-WRT allows nice tricks like renaming the router - this is the name that will appear in apps like Netstumbler. It also allows you to change not only the password but the user name. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25691 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

thanks for the replies, Mark. I was reading through the wiki info on setting up scripts and so forth...I agree that it's mind boggling what a cheapy router can do when you put on some geekware. amazing. good advice on the signal boosting...I can't see how I'm going to resist boosting the signal though, even though your advice is well backed up. The wiki repeatedly says you shouldn't boost to the max of 250ish, but also says that the range between 75-125 is about ideal. Considering that linksys sets it at 25...well, I just can't resist boosting that. one question on the comment you made about firewall-- is it deficient to your SMC in ease of configuration, or in actual ability to block incoming attacks?
