RE: [slim] Re: Playing songs purchased from iTunes Store

2006-03-14 Thread Philip Bouscarle
Tried that - I get a sync error every time. I set it to the lowest error
recovery setting and still it refuses to play ball.

The album is in a really strange format as well - this is a 14 track album,
yet 16 tracks come up in EAC. The last two aren't actually music tracks at
all.

This is the first CD I have bought that has defeated me and I really hope it
isn't the shape of things to come. Buying the CD and then downloading a
functional version from allofmp3 doesn't make sense to me.

Try EAC? It's ripped all my "protected" CDs just fine.

This also depends on the drive used i think. I know my older Plextor
writer had problems with some albums (The Beatles - Let it Be... Naked
was one) but the Plexwriter Premium i got handles anything i give it.

VERY good to know! Thanks. I *was* worried about converting new CDs
into FLAC for use with SB3, - but guess it's not an issue.

Interesting - I am in the UK but bought it from play.com from memory. It
isn't OS specific as the band on the back says it will play under MS 2000,
XP or Mac OS 8.6+.

Dave Gilmour's new album is on its way from play right now, so I'll see
whether that is copy-protected as well. (it's already available on
allofmp3!)

I recently bought this CD (from amazon.co.uk) and didn't have any
problems ripping it (using iTunes on Mac OSX 10.4) + playing on my SB.

Maybe the protection is region and/or OS specific?

It's not just iTunes now though. I recently bought Beth Orton's new album,
Comfort of Strangers on CD. This is protected by IFPI and will only play on
a computer through its own programme. You can burn a backup disc but that is
still protected and it will not import into iTunes. As far as I can tell,
there is no way to get it into Slimserver. (Anyone know different?)

So I had to cough up another $2 to download a copy from allofmp3 that I can
use on the SB and my iPod.

Just makes me want to bang all their heads together!

I've tried rationally explaining the issue a number of times, but it's
usually water off a duck's back, no matter how I explain it. So now I
just mock my iTunes using friends whenever they run into a problem. "I
told you so!" seems much more effective.

[slim] Re: Playing songs purchased from iTunes Store

2006-03-14 Thread Cleve

I have bought a grand total of ONE song via Itunes 6. I was really
angered that I couldn't play it on either Squeezebox 3 or Winamp 2.8

The way I got it to play on SB3 was via a "brute force" method - First
I made Itunes burn it to CD. Then I used EAC/FLAC to make a FLAC file
from the CD. Now DRM is bypassed and I can listen to the song with
whatever playback method/hardware I choose.

[slim] Re: Playing songs purchased from iTunes Store

2006-03-14 Thread Cubed

NWP, I totally agree. Why anyone would purchase music from iTMS is
beyond me - in the UK each 'tune' is 79p and thus an album is around
£10!! This is for a lossy 128kbps encrypted file that generally has
no sleeve notes or lyrics and can only be played back on certain
equipment. As a long term Apple hardware user I have applauded their
technical innovation, industrial design sense and software integration
- however with every release they are moving further towards the
Microsoft 'lock em in good and proper' business model.

I use iTunes as my music management software but not one of the 4500
files has been purchased from Apple!

[slim] Re: Playing songs purchased from iTunes Store

2006-03-13 Thread NWP

There is good information about ITunes and their encryption here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairPlay

This came into play for me just the other day. I had been hyping
Squeezebox and Slimserver to my brother and he was ready to take the
plunge and give it a try. Then he mentioned, "Oh yeah, this will play
all the songs I've been buying on ITunes, right?" Grr [EMAIL PROTECTED]@$

Microsoft takes a ton of crap for their monopolistic practices ( M$ lol
etc), but I don't think they've ever really pissed me off as much as
this ITunes encryption does. I encourage everyone to spread the word
whenever they hear someone using ITunes to buy music. You not only buy
music, you are buying into the necessity to buy your hardware from Apple
whenever you want to play that music.

Getting back to the original poster's question: Another option you
have is to burn the music to CD then rip it back from the CDs in
another form like MP3. Whether or not this is a potential solution
really depends on the amount of songs they have bought.

it was my understanding that itunes 6x added some new key to the
encryption on all songs when it was first started. you are correct in
that that hymn faq suggests otherwise.

Of course, the easiest way to find out is to give it a go... of course,
back up those songs!!

^^^ What if she downloaded most of the songs when she still had iTunes

Is it the case that once you upgrade to iTunes 6, ALL the songs in your
library get re-encrypted by the new version?

No, once the songs are touched by itunes 6x they have to be on itunes
6x. Just wait a while and the hymn guys will break the itunes 6x
encryption. Just tell your friend not to upgrade itunes anymore until
you can run hymn on the collection.
