[slim] Re: Problem restoring playlists from backup

2007-01-29 Thread Siduhe

First question - is the path used in your playlist files the same as the
way Slimserver sees your music library ?
So if your playlist shows mnt/dir/Music/filename.mp3, is your music
library also set up as mnt/dir (for example) ?

Do your playlists use relative paths ? [Slimserver doesn't]

You need to point Slimserver at the playlist directory - does it
recognise the directory as valid ? Could it be a permissions issue, if
you've been moving the playlists around - does Slimserver have read
access ?

Finally, try running Slimserver from the command line,
but add the following "--d_scan --logfile=[your directory
here]scanlog.txt"

Then do a "playlist only" rescan. When Slimserver has finished the
scan, look for the scanlog.txt file and see if there are any error
messages. Does this give you a clue as to why the files aren't found ?
Welcome to post a chunk up here if you want others to comment.

See the below thread for a very similar discussion I had with another
poster that may help.

[slim] Re: Problem restoring playlists from backup

2007-01-29 Thread tweis

Hello,

I am having a similar problem. When I update Slimserver, I can't get
it to recognize any of my existing playlists. I've tried uninstalling
and reinstalling, copying playlists to directories and alternately,
setting the playlist directory to where my playlists are. Slimserver
sees none of my playlists.

I initially discovered the problem when I updated to 6.5.0. I had my
playlists in the default location and it got wiped out. I rebuilt my
playlists in a safe location but I can't use them.

Thanks,
Thomas

[slim] Re: Problem rescanning music

2006-12-09 Thread pbnelson

Using Windows XP I too have had issues with rescan failing on extra-long
song filenames in extra long foldernames. The easy way to tell if a
song has too long a filename is to right-click the song (the WAV or
FLAC or MP3 file) in Windows Explorer. If the a shortened popup menu
appears (no rename option) then the filename is too long. Move the
offending folder and retry the rescan. Another issue I had with rescan
was the use of an invalid character (a greek character) in a song
filename. I found that one the hard way. I emptied my music folder,
then rescanned. Worked okay. Then moved the first ten albums back
into the music folder, and rescanned. Worked okay. Repeat until the
rescan fails. Then you know the bad song is in one of the last ten
albums, which you can manually browse, looking for problem filenames.
That is, looking for filenames with weird characters or too many
characters. Hope this helps.

I found a big difference between using itunes within slimserver and not

found.

Good luck.

For a minor upgrade you should be fine just installing over the top of
6.5, in which case everything will be preserved. If you're feeling
paranoid, take a copy of the plugins dir and .conf file before
uninstalling and then installing the new one clean.

[slim] Re: Problem playing internet radio (checking stream)

2006-12-01 Thread rybber

Okay, I now have got my shiny SB3 - what a wonder!

It works just like the softsqueezes when playing internet radio.

First, my network setup:

- HTPC running slimserver is connected via giagabit LAN to switch and
the to a linksys WRT54G wifi router. I have a laptop using softsqueeze
over wifi. I have a main PC connected via gigabit LAN and using
softsqueeze. Now I have my SB3 connected via wifi (54mbit/s).

All players (hard and soft) work the same way: MP3 playback is
spotless.

I can actually play some internet streams now. Denmarks Radio asx 128
kbit streams work just fine, LastFM works, Slimdevices picks works. But
I do have trouble with a couple of streams.

http://www.radio100fm.dk/netradio/100fm_live.asx

The above stream will turn off my SB3 (and freeze my softsqueezes). The
slimserver itself is stopped, requiring a manually restart (I do this
over VNC desktop control)

http://www.dr.dk/netradio/Metafiler/asx/dr_p3_128.asx

The stream above work just fine. I tried a bunch of other asx streams
and all of them seem to work os maybe it's a stream-only problem?

When I posted the first post, none of the above streams worked, but now
I'm left with only one that's not working. I have tried a couple .pls
stream but I couldn't get them to work either.

Unfortunately, after a full rescan, all of the playlists appear in

truncating the others. Anyone familiar with this? I've also updated to

No: the modules seem not to be available for x64 bit systems. From
ActiveState's support pages: "This is expected because currently there are
no Windows x64 repositories." - You're out of luck :-(. Forget Perl for
now. Let's try to see why the standard installation doesn't work.

You've installed slimserver, right? Can you access http://localhost:9000
from your server's machine?

Should I just install Windows XP (32-bit version) and call it a day?

I'm the last to tell somebody "reinstall Windows" just to fix an issue.
I'd rather like to know what's going on here. Maybe the whole x64 stuff
was a red herring as I'm currently trying to fix a similar issue on a
machine at work. Wait before we've gone through other possibilities.

Welcome in the dependancy hell: as you're using 64-bit Windows and Perl,
the binary modules that come with slimserver don't work. You need 64-bit
versions for these, too.

Run "ppm install dbd-mysql" and "ppm install yaml-syck" from a command
window. You should see something like the following:

M:\>ppm install dbd-mysql
Downloading DBD-mysql-3.0002...done
Unpacking DBD-mysql-3.0002...done
Generating HTML for DBD-mysql-3.0002...done
Installing to site area...done
  14 files installed

M:\>ppm install yaml-syck
Downloading YAML-Syck-0.71...done
Unpacking YAML-Syck-0.71...done
Generating HTML for YAML-Syck-0.71...done
Installing to site area...done
  11 files installed

Then try to run perl slimserver.pl again as you did last time.

This is automatically done by the installer. You don't have to put

No. The file you're looking for is simply called slimserver.pl. You
_could_ run it by double-clicking it. But any output when crashing would
be lost. I'd therefore recommend you open a command window to run it.

It should imho be in [yourslimserverfolder]\server (if I'm not completely

Did I download the right thing?

Can't say from the link you gave me. Just be sure to take the x64 version.

[slim] Re: Problem with radio station .ram file that contains comments

2006-10-24 Thread bpa

Post bugs for AlienBBC can be posted in the 3rd party plugins.

In the case of RNE, I created that entry as an alternative to the WMA
streams but I haven't checked it recently. It's possible RNE no
longer support RealAudio as many national stations are changing over to
WMA.

Regarding naming - .ram files can have multiple URLS - in whiuch case
they will be presented as a playlist on the SB/Web interface. With
AlienBBC the entries are number [1], [2] etc. and if there is a "title"
entry in the file it will be used - otherwise the name will be the URL.
With MyPicks you might be able to specify a title but I need to check.

bpa,
OK, I've installed the alien patch & it works fine, now the Title shows

I looked to try other .ram entries of interest to me & tried the RNE
entries contained in AlienBBC menu - RNE Radio Nacional de Espana but
they don't work, since the Real entries from the RNE website don't work
either that's hardly suprising, the windows media links do work. What
is the mechanism for me to communicate these changes to the AlienBBC

I don't use Windows Firewall, but in general you can access these
things by right-clicking on the tray icon.

While SlimServer has in/out access on the relevant ports, the firewall
may be blocking incoming connections from the Squeezebox, incorrectly
believing it's a hostile machine trying to access your network. If the
Squeezebox isn't included in what the firewall thinks is the LAN, it
would certainly be doing this. This sort of information is in the logs
- something like "blocked traffic". It's generally a timestamp with the
IP number and the port. If you see repeated entries showing that the
Squeezebox's IP was blocked, there's your problem.

The Squeezebox is quite insistent and it will try to contact the server
every few seconds. Your log will be full of these entries if indeed
this traffic is being blocked.

I don't know if Windows Firewall is that sophisticated, but that's what
to look for.

Michael Herger seems to think that this is a Windows 64-bit problem
though. I sure hope not, because you'll be largely on your own to
solve that issue.

Hmm, that should be all you need.

Do your firewall logs indicate anything being blocked with respect to
the Squeezebox or SlimServer? What firewall are you using? Is the
Squeezebox listed as part your local LAN in the firewall?

Sorry if I implied otherwise. Certainly if you're running Windows XP

Sure, that will do the same thing. But you should also have a command
prompt somewhere in the Start Menu. A default install places it in
Start - Programs on the 32-bit edition anyway.

Yes - Settings - Information - Player Information.

I fear so: the solution he pointed to was about crashing 32-bit
applications on Windows x64. I've seen them as well on our super-duper

But I think with a 64-bit Perl slimserver should be fine (maybe I'll find

mherger,
I first started this thread asking about a slimserver and EAC problem.
I have since moved the slimserver problem to the beginner's area.

I provided a link above that has a fix for the EAC problem I was
having. The fix is described in the last reply inside of the thread.

I was hoping you could describe the solution to me so that I may be
able to fix the problem I am having with EAC. I have not been able to
open EAC thus I have not tried much with it.

Thank you for the extra details about the perl fix for slimserver.

Mark Lanctot,
The first time I tried connecting to slimserver, the IP address for
slimserver was xxx.xxx.x.101 and the IP address for my computer was
xxx.xxx.x.100, just as you described. It did not connect though.

I checked and the TCP and UDP ports have access, I did this all last
night.

I am actually computer literate, though it may seem like I'm not, but
can you please divulge more info about

"Check ipconfig and check the Squeezebox Settings - Information -
Player Information menu to make sure you have a unique IP address."

Do you mean Run->"cmd"->"ipconfig"

Then how do I check the SB settings? Is this the same as checking the
settings right on the SB with the remote as control?

When you say "hangs", what exactly happens?

What happens to the SlimServer screen? Does it say "Your player was
not found" or does SlimServer freeze, crash or otherwise stop running?
If it's that the player cannot be found, it's a network or firewall
issue. If SlimServer crashes, it could be an IP address conflict, i.e.
the Squeezebox has the same address as SlimServer or another device on
your network. Otherwise it's a Windows 64-bit problem - it would be
hard to fix this on this forum because there are so few Windows 64-bit
users here.

What does the Squeezebox display say?

If it connects to SqueezeNetwork, that means you have the gateway and
DNS server settings right. You *might* have the Squeezebox's IP
address right, but only so far as it's one allowed on your LAN (your
local network), see below.

> I was a little confused about the different between assigning my IP
> address and choosing an IP for Slimserver. Does that make sense? What
> is the difference between the two?

The IP address of SlimServer is the address of the computer it's
installed in. Go to Start - Programs - Command Prompt and type
"ipconfig" to find it.

The IP address of the Squeezebox is obtained automatically by a process
known as DHCP where your router hands out addresses automatically. The
Squeezebox setting for this is "Obtain IP address automatically". You
can also set it yourself. In both cases you must ensure the addresses
are unique - the SlimServer IP address must NOT be the same as the
Squeezebox IP address! They will be similar but unique, for example,
192.168.1.101 for SlimServer and 192.168.1.102 for the Squeezebox.

Check ipconfig and check the Squeezebox Settings - Information - Player
Information menu to make sure you have a unique IP address.

Then check into your server's firewall configuration to make sure
SlimServer has full in/out access. All it needs is TCP and UDP ports
3483 and TCP port 9000, or you can give it full access.

I hope it isn't an issue with Windows XP 64-bit, because you may have a
hard time finding help on that OS here. Not too many run it.

AlienBBC has its own private version control. The code is only made
available in releases.

However, here is a patch - it works for your URL - it needs to be

Replace the file RTSPPL.pm in the directory Plugins/Alien/Playlists

It's fast-forward/rewind only; normal playback is fine. I hadn't
actually considered the possibility that the files wouldn't be
supported at all! The native support is still very welcome -- I'm
pleased not to be transcoding on the server now (since the overwhelming
majority of my music is Ogg Vorbis).

Thanks,

2006-09-25 Thread andyg

Does this refer to a fast-forward or rewind issue, or the fact that you
can't play your Ogg files at all? If the latter, check the encoder
version that was used to encode your Ogg file. Any pre-1.0 beta
versions of oggenc probably won't work, and you'll need to re-encode
using a non-beta encoder. Or, uncheck the Ogg (built-in) item and you
can transcode to FLAC.

Thanks Jack,
I tried removing the ID3v1 tag information, but that didn't fix it. So
far the only thing that works is to completely remove all tag

[slim] Re: Problem Playing m4a Files

2006-09-05 Thread MikeWynneDub

Hi Ceejay,

I think it's sorted!

Under Server Settings/File Types there were 3 options for Apple AAC
with the Stream Format as AIFF, FLAC and MP3 respectively.

By deselecting the first two (AIFF & FLAC) and leaving only MP3
selected seems to have cured the problem.

Obviously, converting from M4A to MP3 on-the-fly is not gonna be as
'hi-fi' as, say, FLAC but my stereo is not that revealing.

When I upgrade to a kick-ass stereo I reckon I'll have to get wired
(but then I'll also have to re-rip my music to a lossless format).

You were right about everything being wireless (laptop and Squeezebox)
but the WLAN seems to be capable of dealing with streaming MP3 to/from
laptop & Squeezebox.

Many, many thanks...

I recommend connecting your SB to the router, assuming it has a spare
wired port.

Just one thing springs to mind now: am I right in thinking that your
original setup has both the laptop and the SB on the wireless LAN to
the router? If so, that might partly explain the problems - you are
putting a lot of traffic on your WLAN, and if its suffering at all from
interference then you will have this sort of problem.

So another experiment would be to wire the laptop to the router, and
have the SB wireless.

One more possible thing to look at: I'm curious about why higher rate
MP3s are playing fine, while lower rate AACs are not. I'm wondering
whether this is because the SB can't play AACs natively: they must be
transcoded by the server to something else, like MP3 or FLAC. Have a
look at server settings/filetypes, perhaps your AACs are being
transcoded to something high rate like FLAC or WAV?

I don't know if jdvmi and I have the same issue or not, but I can
confrim with the flac files that I have cleared the library and
rescaned everything.

When I updated title and artist tags via tag and rename, the slimserver
seems to update properly on the clear and rescan, but the genre tags do
not.

I am running windows XP, SP2, I observed the same behavior with the
same files on 6.3.1 and now 6.5b1 - 9373.

I am going to attempt jdvmi's suggestion to find a way to clear the tag

Hi Ceejay,

Firstly, thank you for your reply.

I'm listening to SoftSqueeze right now (as a Java applet in FireFox)
and the tracks in question play perfectly.

No problems ever with mp3 playback (usually at 192kbps), the m4a's are
all at 128kbps.

I'll rip a few tunes to WAV and try that.

I'll switch to channel 1 and give that a go...

This might seem like a stupid question but, what do I connect the
Squeezebox to? - The router or the laptop (with a cros-over
ethernet?).

I'm only getting to grips with Wi-Fi...

Again, Thanks...

2006-09-04 Thread ceejay

A couple of things to try ...

First, even though its not where you want to end up, try wired ... this
will confirm if its a network issue or something else.

Also, you mentioned mp3 ... do mp3 files generally play ok? How about
a few WAVs?

If the mp3's play, and the wm4a's don't, is that because the m4a's are
higher bit rate? [the WAVs should show this up].

I'd also try some other channels - there are other things besides
wireless LANs that can interfere, and netstumbler won't find those...

Oh, yes, and... does it work with Softsqueeze?

mp3tag will tell you if you have both. If you have different
information in the two sets of tags, its quite possible slimserver has
got confused.

not sure what is causing this, but it is definately something somewhere
in the tag information that is not shown to tag programs like Mp3Tag and

Re: [slim] Re: Problem updating to 6.5

2006-09-03 Thread Mitch Harding
You may want to uninstall, delete (or rename) the /Program Files/SlimServer/ directory, and then install 6.5.  I noticed that when I uninstalled, it left the directory behind, and perhaps some of the stuff in that directory was causing the problem.
But I am still experiencing intermittent crashes after the upgrade.  They aren't as frequent as I initially reported -- I suspect the increased initial frequency may have been because it was still scanning my music library while I was changing server and player settings.  Now that it is done scanning, it has crashed two or three times over a day or two.  These more recent crashes happened just during playback, not when I was doing anything with the web interface.

Wow, that was fast. Do you have the PLI-2021 and is it hardware version
1, version 2 or version 3? (the -V number below the barcode will tell
us)

[slim] Re: Problem with Powerline Ethernet (Level One)

2006-08-29 Thread WSLam

Dennis, I have done all that you suggested. I have tried 3 diff SB3 as
well. SB3 is ONLY have a problem with the Level One. the only thing
that I have not yet tried is a diff powerline ethernet adaptor.

can't see dhcp, can't see slimserver, hence non pingable.

i think this is a specific incompatability users should note.

no filter, no UPS. Like i said, when i replace the SB3 with a notebook
computer, it works immediately. i have already tried diff sockets. the
software can see the adaptor, it's SB3 that cannot see anything through
the Level One.

Only thing to watch if you follow Dennis' steps is to ensure any
trailing sockets do not have any onboard surge suppression/VDR's etc.
The Homeplugs need to see a 'clear' mains supply.

[slim] Re: Problem with Powerline Ethernet (Level One)

2006-08-29 Thread dennisd

I'd recommend the following debug steps:
1)Plug the SB3 directly into the router and power it up. If it works
then check it with the other ethernet cable. If successful with both
then,
2)In the same room as the router, plug both adapters into the same wall
socket (or whatever as long as it does not have a power filter and plug
into the same wall connector. I'd use a cube tap or extension cord for
this), connect one adapter to the router (same port as the step 1) and
connect the other adapter to the SB3. Power up the SB3 and see what
happens. The adapter LEDs may help diagnose the situation also.

Alternatively, take the SB3 to your home, where the computers worked,
use the same cables after verifying the computers still works and power
the SB3 up and see if the SB3 gets an IP address (it is pingable too
then!)

I have used 2 brands of these adapters and have never heard of a
incompatibility problem. Let us know what you find in this simple test
case and we will go from there.
Hang in there,
Dennis

[slim] Re: Problem with Powerline Ethernet (Level One)

2006-08-29 Thread Heuer

All Homeplug units 'should' work to the same agreed standard and my SB3
works perfectly with the High Speed Devolos (along with two TiVos and
security cameras/DVR). I assume you have not plugged the Powerline into
any mains filtration or UPS devices as these will immediately block the
ethernet connection? The two units also need to be on the same ring
main - have you tried putting them in adjacent sockets?

Otherwise it does indeed sound like there is a compatability issue -
try Devolo or Netgear.
