[slim] Re: Stealth (hidden) Installation Possible? - ie without physical access to the SB3

2006-06-04 Thread ceejay

Personally, I really wouldn't do that if I were you. You've already
identified two situations - hard reboot and firmware upgrade - where
you might need to see it. And, besides, isn't it nice to be able to
SEE what's playing?

If you really want blind ceiling speakers then you might be better off
dispensing with the SB altogether and running straight audio cable from
a multi-channel PC sound card...

if you are having the rooms re-built then could you not get a small
cupboard built to house the SBs? that way if you need to get to them
you can quite easily.

Although personally i would rather build them into a wall so you could
still see the displays. Unless either room is really small and gets
really steamy, i can't see there would be a problem with them.

 Hi,

I have got some rooms being rebuilt (eg kitchen/bathroom) where I may
not want to see the SB3 (yes I know this sounds crazy!) but rather run
from PC using ceiling speakers. Basically nothing can be seen in the
 room.

My question is, is it wise to install behind a wall or shelf which is
very difficult to access? Are there some things (like a hard re-set)
that DO need physical line of sight; or can eveything be done from the
 slimserver interface.

I guess I am most worried when my system hangs and I need to re-boot
the SB3 or on upgrades where I have to hold the brightness key.
I wouldn't do it. I've had to unplug/plug in my SBs on a couple of
occasions to get them back among the living.

If you don't want to be able to see the SB, then obviously you plan on
controlling the music in some other way, such as over the network. If
that were the case I'd consider some other type of source, such as a PC
with multiple soundcards located in a central wiring closet, with long
audio runs to the bedrooms, more in line with a typical whole-house
audio setup. These setups have been discussed here before, so you
might want to do a search.

It's easy enough to hide the SBs and still allow access. Stick them in
a cupboard, or build a little access plate into the wall.

2006-06-04 Thread netim3

I do this today. I have ceiling speakers in my bathrooms, but the SBs
and room amps are in a cupboard outside the bathroom. I can get to them
to update firmware when necessary (only had to do it once when upgrading
to SlimServer 6.5). I prefer this approach to running a PC with multiple
cound cards etc because I like other functionality such as synching
players together, and because I like the audio quality I get.

I use Telcanto on a wifi pocket PC to control all the rooms.
