Re: [slim] SB3 connects and then powers off after turning on at wall

The MAC and IP addresses are all different (checked in
LMS->Settings->Information).

I had just hoped there was a setting somewhere but I suspect you are
right, it's probably a hardware thing. Now I think about it the analog
output on this SB3 is broken which is a common problem, fixed by
replacing a capacitor apparently. I guess these SB3s are pretty long in
the tooth. Probably time to build some Pi based players if I can get the
time as I am not aware of any sensibly priced off the shelf players out
there..

IF PSU is OK, then failing WLAN card can also sometimes have symptoms
described.

A failing WLAN card will stop SB3 from working even if not using WiFi.

SB3 can work without WLAN card so you can test by removing WLAN card and
connecting SB3 to LMS using wired connection. If SB3 still fails, then
it is not WLAN card.

[slim] SB3 connects and then powers off after turning on at wall

2022-12-31 Thread rbl

Hi - if I turn my SB3 on at the mains it successfully connects to the
WiFi but then powers off, and I have to tell it to power on which it
does immediately. How do I get it to stay on? I have another SB3 which
does stay on and I can't see any differences in the settings. The only
vaguely relevant setting I can see is Player->Audio->Power on Resume
which is set to "Pause at Power off / Resume at power on" and this is
the same for both SB3s.

FWIW I am running LMS 8.3.0 on a Pi4 which is left on at all times.

Any ideas?

The Pi4 analogue output is connected to a simple analogue amplifier, and
the SB3's coax out goes to an amplifier with coax inputs. All speakers
are wired into the amps.

Interesting about the progress bar - that explains that behaviour at
least.

The speakers are hard wired.

I have enabled Warnings on player.streaming, player.streaming.direct,

I was suggesting the connection between the SB3 and the speakers is
where the problem might lie.

I think that the browser JavaScript updates the progress bar using a
timer and periodically asks LMS where it should be. So it is very
possible for the progress bar to be inaccurate when there are some
problems happening.

You could put a higher level of detail on the “player” logs in
LMS/Settings/Advanced/Logging

ok - I'll try taking a lengthy CAT5 to the SB3 then and see if that
stops the problem.
A slightly odd thing that I should mention is that quite often when I
look at LMS in Chrome on a separate Windows PC then it (at least
sometimes) shows the FLAC as still playing (with the progress indicator
ticking over). There's just no sound!

Is there a buffer setting or something I can change?

too. it seems more reliable with BBC Sounds, but it's hard to be

[slim] SB3 occasionally stops / clicks with LMS running on a wired Pi4

2022-09-25 Thread rbl

My WiFi SB3 occasionally stops, clicks, or makes odd noises. The obvious
answer is this is a networking problem but I'd be surprised since LMS is
running on a wired up-to-date Pi4, and the WiFi SB3 is pretty nearby
albeit on a 2 node mesh system. I live in a small detached house and the
WiFi is excellent throughout.

I looked at the LMS log but there is nothing of interest in there. In
fact the last entry is a week ago! Any idea how to investigate this
further? There are other players attached, but the problem occurs even
when they are turned off. I haven't noticed the problem with BBC
Sounds.

I don't know if you're still interested, but I have a Pi3B + HiFiBerry
DAC (RCA out) + Black metal case + Raspberry Pi 5v/2.5amp PSU + SD card
with piCorePlayer installed, doing nothing. Just connect ethernet cable
and power up, it appears as a player in LMS. Great sound. Reason for
sale - SWMBO says I need to de-clutter. :(

Looks like picture below, but for a Raspberry Pi 3.

Re: [slim] SB3 appears dead

2022-01-24 Thread benslim

Adding my appreciation for this forum and the community for steering me
in the right direction (also big thanks to Logitech for keeping the
Squeezebox alive). Yesterday, my trusty Squeezebox SB3 was dark. I'd
seen this problem before, and usually I just unplug and plug it back in,
but this time it stayed black. The Toslink in the back did light up red
though. I checked the power supply with a multimeter, and it had power,
so I RULED THAT OUT.

I started hunting around for an alternative, but as there is none, I
considered finally building a Raspberry Pi + Hifiberry DAC+ RCA media
streamer to replace it - I'll get around to building this eventually.
Due to the chip shortage, you need to fork out $100 just for a used
Raspberry Pi on eBay, because they're out of stock for months.

So today, I thought I'd see if there's some miracle boot sequence I can
use to revive my old friend, and I tried Add (+) and plugging in, then
tried 1 and plug in. Then I read this thread, and at first was a little
confused at the mention of "power supply" - wondering how there can be a
power supply in the unit as well as a power adapter external - then
realized y'all were talking about the 5VDC external power adapter
failing (to me I had ruled it out, so my thoughts were internal). So I
dug through my wall warts and found a perfect fit at 5VDC and 2A, and it
came back to life.

I also read about the capacitors for the audio channels - maybe someday
I'll replace those - for now I use the Toslink.

The offender: GROUP WEST Model AUT 05 1600; 5VDC 1600mA center positive
power adapter.

Symptoms: Powers down to black screen (blank screen) overnight. The
normal, warm unit is cold. Unplugging/plugging doesn't reset it, but the
red Toslink light still comes on.

[slim] SB3 intermittently stops 'working'

2022-01-17 Thread jp14

This Squeezebox 3 has been working for years, but I fear is failing.
Any suggestions, or is it time to migrate to new HW? Anyone else
experienced something like this?

It is exhibiting the following behavior intermittently, typically a few
times a day:

- When listening to locally hosted files (they're all flac but I don't
think that matters), after playing for some time, the sound stops.
Even though there's no sound, the progress bar shows that the first 5
or 10 seconds of music are repeating. I can just hit the Next button
and then music starts up again.
- When streaming an Internet radio station, after playing for some
time, the sound and the stream stops. I hit the Play button and the
  stream starts up again.

I have a number of other Squeezeboxes (SB3, Touch, Radio, RasberryPi) in
the house - this is the only device that exhibits this behavior. When I
have other players synchronized to this SB3, all the synchronized
players stop playing - they all follow the same behavior as the bad
SB3.

(I'll save you the long story, but I can't swap my existing SB3 for
testing.)

So then, just before posting, I went through the log files, because
that's what I assume you're going to ask for. And I'm pretty sure these
are the logs close to the most recent failure - yes - it's the Kitchen
player at 00:04:20:07:6c:6e. I don't know enough about the inner
workings of ShairTunes2, but would this explain the failure?

Aha! Both my routers had auto selected Channel 13. I switched them to 11
and suddenly the SB3 can see them. I wouldn't have guessed that in a
million years so thank you very much!

It's currently 10 feet away with no walls in between. It's picking up
the WiFi from a neighbouring flat. Very odd!

I think SSIDS with odd characters may cause problems - just
alphanumeric and no spaces etc.

Turn off any 40MHz channel bonding.

For testing, fix the channel and make sure the channels is either 1,6 or
11 - IIRC SB3 may have had "problems" with channel 13

All 4 SSIDs have different names, and other devices do see them so they
are not hidden. I am just wondering if it is something to do with the
SB3 being 20 years old, but even that seems odd. The router is set to
802.11 b/g/n 144Mbit/s which is meant to be compatible with all 2.4GHz

My first thought was that maybe you have them configured as "hidden" in
your router.

Can they be seen by any devices that have never connected before?
For example - a friend's phone.
Do the 5GHz and 2.4GHz SSIDs have different names? If not - then that
could be why the Samsung device lists it.

[slim] SB3 not seeing 2.4GHz SSIDs

2021-11-28 Thread rbl

Hi - I live in central London and there are quite a few routers in
range. I have two routers, both running 2.4 and 5GHz signals on 4
different SSIDs. My SB3 doesn't see any of them! Obviously I don't
expect it to see the 5GHz signals.
- if i manually type in the SSID into the SB3 then it connects, but it
still doesn't add it to the list of available WiFi SSIDs
- all routers are on WPA2 only
- my Samsung S10 phone sees all 4 of them.
- I am using an old BT Homehub 5 router, and a new Nokia router
- the SB3 is in range!

Any idea why my SB3 isn't seeing these SSIDs? I have used wired
connections up to now so I haven't noticed the problem before.

you will see alot of people use a raspberry Pi single board computer
with PiCore Player, Max2Play, etc. You can add a Hat to provide analog
or digital output, and a screen. There is also a Polyvection device
(DAC32?) that allot of people seem to like, I have not tried one.

I use a raspberry pi3b+ running LMS on Picore Player with a 2TB HDD for
my library, about a $100USD solution, can't beat that. I don't run it as
a player too, but many do.

Having said all of that, I am still buying logitech squeezebox devices
on ebay (Radios, Touch, Boom, I would not by another Duet/Receiver). I
love them and used they are a great value. Really well engineered.
Radios for about $60USD in the US, compared to $300 MSRP I think.
Touches less than $150USD. I think I have a bit of a problem (e.g. I
have about 3 radios as "spare"). It seems that many might have been just
sitting in a box, so they still have alot of life. I have gotten a
couple that still had protective film on them!

Re: [slim] SB3-where can I get a replacement remote control

2021-07-05 Thread TomFromCT

Success! (I think).

I was able to pry it open very carefully using a letter opener and, most
importantly, without breaking or losing anything. Nothing looked too
bad as far as dirt/gunk goes-certainly nothing worse than would
accumulate 15 years sitting on a shelf. I cleaned the rubbery button
pad with rubbing alcohol and rubbing with a handkerchief, did the same
to the front of the case to polish it up some (no markings loss) and
rubbed the on/off electronic contact with a pencil eraser a few times,
gently.

It now seems to be working consistently. Thanks for all the advice and
help, much appreciated.

Now to spend some time going through these forums to help pick out this
squeezebox's eventual successor. After all, 15+ years of regular use is
pretty impressive but this won't last forever and Logitech abandoned
this line. I'd had a hard time finding something simple and easy enough
to use, and unobtrusive (WAF is a huge issue) and cheap enough (I'm a
product of multiple generations of New Englanders). I still think the
Squeezebox is the best piece of electronic equipment I ever bought
(except perhaps my large Advent speakers-bought in 1971 as my first
audiophile purchase and foolishly sold sometime in the eighties because
the cabinets were getting very beat up from multiple moves.

I am not familiar with the remote, but alot of the squeezebox devices
had the tactile controls (buttons/knobs) coated with a "tactile feel"
substance (i.e. "rubber" but not rubber). This substance deteriorates
over time, so most likely this is what you are feeling. There are a few
threads about it on this forum. Some claim to clean with alcohol, but I
have found the best is to remove and/or repaint, but you would lose all
your icons, etc. so probably best to live with it.

Re: [slim] SB3-where can I get a replacement remote control

2021-07-05 Thread TomFromCT

Thanks for the additional info.

Some updated info-I apparently have a SB2, not SB3 as I originally
guessed. Logitech Media Server under the player tab shows it as
Squeezebox Classic model, type is squeezebox2.

I have an new in box old unused universal remote but have been unable to
get the right code to program it. Best info I could turn up for the
codes was here (
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?101569-Remote-control-code-for-SlimDevices-Squeezebox-Classic-and-Yamaha-RX-S600D-receiver&highlight=remote+control+code
)-I tried the code suggested there (2096) and the half dozen listed for
JVC DVD IR codes in that remote's instructions. Any idea where to find
the remote codes here-forum search turned up a daunting list of
threads.

We were always very careful with this remote, I doubt it ever got
spilled on but the surface does feel sticky. When I get the nerve up I
will try to pop open the case and clean it as suggested above.

Re: [slim] SB3-where can I get a replacement remote control

2021-07-04 Thread Redrum

a couple other thoughts -

Alot of times with those silicone button remotes, especially when old,
you can get pretty in there or even oxidation of the copper. Maybe it
got spilled on, etc. They are basically a conductive material on the
back of the silicone button (usually carbon?) that creates a closed
circuit of copper traces on the remotes PCB when the button is pressed.
If you take them apart, remove and gently wash and dry the silicone pad.
Then use a pencil eraser on the copper "pads" under the buttons to clean
any oxidation off.

You will be surprised how much crap is in the remote. You can also take
the time to clean up the shell once the buttons are out of the way.

Don't worry about being electronically inept :) this is more of a
mechanical thing. You would have to try real hard to mess it up.

The second thought, buy a super cheap universal remote and program it to
the SB codes (they are in the forum somewhere). A step up from cheap, I
use a Harmony 650 (now discontinued, but still on ebay ) to control my
systems including SB touch, amp, tv, etc. I don't ever use the SB
provided remotes anymore.

Then there are the phone/pad apps...

A couple of recent developments-when I went to take a picture of the
remote I gave the on/off button one more try and it is now working
(consistently). Maybe the dozens of tries I've done in the last few
days shook a piece of dust loose or something. Also I found a used one
on ebay and I think I will buy that to have a backup. Thanks for the
generous offer but I'm thinking there is such a limited community of
active users that it may be best to keep as many in safe hands as
possible.

Attached is a picture of my remote. My Squeezebox was purchased in Jan

Tom, I presume you are in Connecticut?

Can you (or someone) post a picture of the remote? I have an extra, but
don't recall which one goes to the SB3 we have (sitting unused), and
which one is the extra. The extra one was a beta remote, same as the
one that shipped, but I believe the locations of a few buttons were
moved.

If I can see an image of the original, I can share a photo of the spare

You can get most of the players on eBay very cheaply. It'd also be a
small surprise if someone here didn't have a remote they'd flog you.

I am very happy with my Dac32 from Polyvection. Absolute breeze to set
up and does Bluetooth too. Downside for you is you'd need a phone to
control it. Both the LMS Material skin and Orange Labs Orange Squeeze
app are great controllers.

[slim] SB3-where can I get a replacement remote control

2021-07-03 Thread TomFromCT

Hello-I was a member here long ago but couldn't log into my old account
so started a new one. I use a SB3 regularly that I bought way back in
Jan 2006. A few days ago the remote became flaky-it won't turn the SB3
on or off, but once it's on the remote works fine. Rebooted the SB3 by
pulling power cord, replaced batteries with known good new ones, no
help. Put the a remote app on an old android phone and use that to turn
the SB on or off, then use remote but I would like to solve the problem
or get a new remote.

If it is the remote, does anyone know where to buy one? My online
search basically failed-I found this one which claims to work but it
doesn't look anything like the SB remote-looks like a generic TV/multi
device remote. EDIT I can't post link as this is my first thread,
sorry.

I periodically check for something new to replace the SB-any suggestions
that aren't kits (I'm inept electronically)? My music library is
essentially lots of FLAC files. My wife uses the SB to access internet
radio. My receiver is getting old in the tooth, a modern audio/video
receiver that enabled me to play FLAC files would be great.

Thanks for any guidance,

I'm using a Hifiberry Digi+, connected to "sensing" powered speakers
over S/PDIF. The output switches off when nothing is playing and the
speakers power off a few minutes later.

Re: [slim] SB3: Switch-Off S/PDIF when SB3 in stand-by

2021-01-03 Thread cliveb

If you're prepared to use a trigger signal from the player to control
the power to your speakers (eg. using a relay), then you could use the
PowerSwitch plugin on the SB3 - this puts out a 3V DC signal on the
heaphone socket when the player is on.
piCorePlayer has a power on/off GPIO control facility, which can deliver
a 3.3V DC signal on the GPIO pin of your choice when the player is on.
If you use a DIGI+ HAT then you'd have to choose a GPIO pin that it
doesn't use and passes through.

allow them to sleep. I have to do this with my DAC as the TV optical
output is always on. Just shows the Intelligent Signal Sensing isn't all
that intelligent. I wonder how many devices do actually switch off the

[slim] SB3: Switch-Off S/PDIF when SB3 in stand-by

2021-01-02 Thread Hering

Hi all,
I am using a SB3 for sourcing audio to a pair of Genelecs (8331) via
S/PDIF (AES/EBU).

The Genelecs use signal sensing for powering on/off. They interpret the
presence of a bit-clock as 'power-on':
https://support.genelec.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015670260-I-have-a-problem-with-a-ISS-Intelligent-Signal-Sensing-

Undortunately, the SB3 keeps the S/PDIF output active even when set to
standby. That prevents the Genelecs from powering down.

Is there any chance to disable the S/PDIF-output when the SB3 is in
standby? Any SW-hack? Any HW-modification?

I would highly appreicate any input!
Cheers,
Hering

Does it have WLAN card ? If so try using Sb3 after removing WLAn card.

Two most common problems with a Sb3 which seems to have power yet does
work and no display (i) power supply - not enough amps or low voltage
under load and (ii) faulty WLAN card - even if not using wifi.

After these easy to fix issues, faulty caps is the next most likely -
bit harder to fix.

[slim] Sb3 fix help

2020-08-24 Thread AndrewPayton

My old squeezebox3 recently went off for no obvious reason, while
listening to a remote radio stream.

Power brick output is fine.

When power is applied:
- nothing is displayed
- "special IR keys" do nothing
- ethernet link goes up (switch sense 100mbps peer)... so its not
"completely dead"
- yet, no network traffic

Opening the thing reveals:
- no charring/burning/damage
- no obvious capacitor leak or damage
- pcb is labeled "slim devices willy 20050630"

Any advice
Thanks !

[slim] SB3 Switching PSU replacement. Opinons?

2020-06-12 Thread epoch1970

The usual scare, suddenly the SB3 stops working... Turns out the SB3 was
not dead. Only its PSU had decided it was time to go.

Years ago I had the same issue (on another unit), I got a PSU out of
AMZN, supposedly "made for SB" and clearly it was not.
More recently (for yet another unit) I made my own USB to barrel
connector cable and used an USB power port available next to the SB3.
Works fine.

I'm contemplating my options, between:
1 - a USB-barrel cord + some redundant mobile/iThing charger
2 - a Raspberry Pi PSU (pretty good and inexpensive, IMHO) to which I
would solder a barrel connector. AFAIK this PSU delivers 5.1V rather
than 5.0V

Do you have an opinion or a go-to solution for this? I'm only interested
in a cheap and compact solution.

Thanks in advance.

But he measured it loaded, so he would likely see a much larger drop if
something was really wrong. Having said that, trying another one is
always a good thing. I've made the comment on capacitors because I've
now fixed many and this seems to be really happening more and more with
the SB3 reaching an age where these fail

I don't think it's ever been specified anywhere but generally most thing
run on 5V +/- 5% so thats 4.75 to 5.25V.

There's no guarantee that this is the right range for your SB3 though.

It COULD still be the PSU as it only takes a momentary drop in voltage
to potentially cause a reset.

does not gain you a lot of time. If you search through this forum,
you'll a few post where I've put the list of references to buy.

Hi, thanks for helping out.

I tried now with 2 other external power supplies (both working with
other SB)

I disassembled the unit and removed the WiFi-card and now connecting
thru Ethernet cable.

The unit starts up nice and run screensaver and so as expected.
But rather immediately when starting to play something it reboots, it
takes just a few seconds now.

Any idea what to check for next?

Two common faults that can give those symptoms are the external power
supply and the WiFi board.
Since you have a spare SB3, have you tried with the power supply from
that one?
Next would be to open the unit and remove the WiFi board and test it
using ethernet cable?

Both power supply and WiFi board should be possible to source on eBay
e.g.

If none of that helps, there are capacitors in the internal power supply
that could be past it.
There are some threads in the forums about replacing those, but start
with the simple things.

I tried Xilinx reset
I tried playing without any outputs connected

Same result, it keep rebooting...

[slim] SB3 rebooting after playing a few tracks

2019-05-01 Thread jasell

Hi,
My SB3 has started to act strange.
Since a few days back it reboots after a playing a few songs.
After reboot it starts up loading the the same song in a paused state.
At one occasion I got a "static sound" just before the restart.

This happens at all times now.
-Sometimes a bit into the fist songs, sometimes after five songs.
-A song that "caused" reboot can play perfectly through out the next
time.

I swapped the SB3 to one of my spare, and the spare runs nicely with the
same configuration.

I suspect the SB3 being bad in some way, overheating or voltage drop
etc.
Do anyone have an idea were to start looking?
Is this a known issue? (like capacitors on the outgoing RCA port that I
changed several years ago...)

I'd love to fix this unit if possible...

"needed"? I've been using a cheap, old one meter RCA analog cable from
an SB3 to a Denon AVR digital input for about eight years, never had a
problem. I think it might even just be one side of a stereo cable pair,
as most of my single RCA cables have bright colored insulation and would
not pass WAF muster.

The SB3 has analogue (as you know) and both optical and coaxial digital
outputs and they are all live so you could connect to the Denon with
both optical and coaxial and see which you think sounds best.

NB a coaxial cable is essentially a single RCA to single RCA but the
cable quality is much higher (needed) than an analogue cable.

I am buying a new amp - Denon PMA-30 - and I see that it has digital

If you guys have another compatible PSU around, try that first. Although
it's more than likely the PSU is not the culprit in this case, there
have been other faltering Squeezebox devices that were remedied by a new
PSU. Some Touch's for example have had remote control issues and certain
owners did some soldering to repair it. However, other owners with the
exact same issue were able to correct the problem with a new PSU.

You don't *have to* and for sure some are still good, but I never tried
to figure out exactly which ones, so every time I replaced them all. To
some extend, it's faster than trial and error. You might try C16 and
C20, as suggested and if it still does not work, then change them all.
Other than that, I can't think of something else to do. Make sure the
CPU and WiFi board are well seated. Opening the SB3 is super easy
anyway, not like a Boom or a Radio

Xmas, and perhaps try to find Ta or NbO2 types with the same footprints,
as they should last longer than Al electrolytics.

I'll report back when the job's done.

Season's Greetings to everyone!

Regards,

I understand, but, from my experience it's a 100% proven cause on 4 SB3
that had this symptom (I saved 3 but on one I stupidly damaged was the
CPU, but I still fixed the MB and verified it). One tip: because
removing capacitor can be done using the "twisting method", it takes
literally 5 minutes to remove them. I think you likely can take a pass
on the 63V which is for the VFD, then you can replace the set close to
the DC/DC, then the set close to the DAC if it still does not work. I
use solder paste, put the capacitors back one by one, hold them with a
plier, solder one leg pretty hot (300°C) to make it quick and handle the
thermal capacity of the ground plane connected ones, then move to next
one. Each capacitor is a 2 minutes job, so it's 1 hour in total. You
might easily spend more time in investigation, unfortunately
