I think you're misinterpreting the question you responded to. The likely
answer is that there's something unrelated to slimserver on your machine
that is using port 9000. Use netstat -a -b to see what it is.

Re: [slim] Slim Server is crashing

2007-03-04 Thread Cleve

Running Netstat -a -b reveals that my McAfee Security Center's Data Back
Up is the program listening on port 9000. My computer came with a
demonstration license of McAfee - which I recently (within the last two
weeks) upgraded to a paid subscription, and the software updated itself.

Honestly, I don't believe I had restarted this computer since then.

So how can I change Slimserver to run on a different port? That's an
option in Server Settings IF I can start Slimserver, which I can't. :(

Re: [slim] Slim Server is crashing

Steve. I changed the port from 9000 to 9100. Slim Server WILL start
now.

HOWEVER, the browser interface isn't working. Firefox prompts to Open
a program from Localhost 9000 - here's the message when I switched to
Internet Explorer -

.NETÁSystem.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException: Tcp channel
protocol violation: expecting preamble. at
System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.Tcp.TcpSocketHandler.ReadVersionAndOperation(UInt16

at
System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.Tcp.TcpServerTransportSink.ServiceRequest(Object
state) at
System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.SocketHandler.ProcessRequestNow()

I have no idea how to interpret or fix this

You need to specify the new port when trying to access SS. Use:

http://localhost:9100/

Not sure about the timed out message, but it sounds like a firewall
problem.

Steve.

Steve,

It was a firewall problem - not with McAfee, but with Windows Firewall.
I reconfigured the Slimserver exception in Windows Firewall to 9100
from 9000, and now Slim Server can play files.

The last problem is the browser interface - If I click on your link
above, I can access SlimServer. How do I make that permanent in my
settings?

[slim] Slim Server is crashing

2007-03-03 Thread Cleve

I rarely restart the desktop I run Slimserver on, but I happened to last
night. SlimServer 6.5.1 crashed as the computer was rebooting - I got a
message that said We're sorry - an error has occured and Slimserver
must close or something to that effect.

I tried rebooting my machine multiple times, and it kept crashing. So
I uninstalled Slimserver, deleted the Slimserver file, and downloaded
and installed a fresh copy of Slim Server. Same problem!! :(

I tried setting Slim Server to NOT automatically start with Windows,
and starting it manually. It tries to start - but never fully loads.
The browser window that usually opens returns an odd message -

You have chosen to open which is an
application/octet stream from http://localhost 9000/ What should
Firefox do with this file? Open with BROWSE or SAVE TO DISK?

The blank above is intentional - no program name is displayed. I'm
running Windows XP media edition. I've never had a problem or glitch
with the software until now. Any help to fix this would be greatly
appreciated.

Does this inlcude a UPnP server? Run netstat -a from the command line
with SlimServer shut down. Do you see something listening on port 9000?
