Since the query's been addressed, I'll just add that being a
photographer, the graphical remote should be right up your alley. If
you upload some of your photos to Flickr, the remote can scroll through
them as a screensaver while not in use.

I've been on the beta programme for quite a while, so some
experiences:

I was never keen on album art - 75% of my music is classical, and who
wants to see some old fogey? However, I have now got really into it -
it does add a lot of 'tangibleness' to browsing. At the moment you
can't turn art off.

If you browse by album, you just get 4 lines, with art. However,
browsing by artist you get 9 (no art), then 4 albums with art once you
choose the artist.

The Controller is better than iPeng on the iTouch. In earlier times
iPeng was better, but recent developments on scrolling and battery life
have been firmly in the Controller's favour!

The menu options are Music Library then artists, albums, genres, years,
new music, random mix, music folder, playlists and search. Just what
you get on the web interface.

No, you can see 4 albums at a time in album view. If you have no album art
you get placeholders, at least for now. There is no way to disable these,
at least for now.

You can see 8 items when browsing at the track level of an album.

Also is th menu structure exasctly the same
> as that in the 7.0 squeezebox SC displays eg music library > playlists

The menu structure is not identical, but similar. In general there is less
configurability, at least for now. For example, there is no way that I've
found to remove menu items I don't need, unlike the player menu
configuration. There's no way to reorder items. In that way, it's more
like the web interface and less like the player interface on the SB.

As you can tell, there are a lot of 'at least for now' situations. I think
it's clear that Logitech is not Apple and they won't ram a specific use case
or use mode down all user's throats. I see a lot of interesting things in
the next 12 months.

iPeng works with the Duet, Transporter and SqueezeBox. The current
version doesn't contain all the functionality available through the
standard IR remote controls and SqueezeBox Controller, but it is
getting better for every day. It contains the most important
functionality already today.

Officially you currently need a SqueezeBox Controller to initially
configure the SqueezeBox Receiver, but the Controller is not needed for
controlling the Receiver after it has been configured.

Unofficially, there is a alpha version of a plugin which makes it
possible to configure the SqueezeBox Receiver from a computer over
wired network, see this thread for more information:

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet and Remote - to buy or not to buy?

2008-03-08 Thread MagnusVonMagnum

After examining several whole house audio solutions, I'm currently down
to looking at either going with an Airtunes + iPod Touch running Remote
Buddy solution OR a Squeezebox + iPod Touch running iPeng solution (plus
possibly a MediaPro + PS3 option in the home theater room).

My all important question is whether or not the iPod Touch with iPeng
will work with the new Duet receiver or not without a Duet Controller.
I know it will work with the Squeezebox 3 unit, but it's 2x as much than
the receiver by itself and has a display that wouldn't be needed with
either the iPod Touch or the Duet Controller. All the posts I've been
reading either "guess" it will work or aren't stating it precisely
enough. I thought I read somewhere that the new Duet currently ONLY
works with the Duet Controller, so I really need a definitive answer.
Obviously, the iPod Touch has a LOT more potential for utility (full
browser, e-mail, movie playback, iPod functionality plus ability to buy
more applications in the future) than the Duet controller and it costs
LESS so I think I'd MUCH rather have an iPod Touch (only down side I've
seen is the battery is not easily user replaced on the iPod Touch).

So will I be able to buy just the Duet receiver and an iPod Touch and
use Squeeze Center on my PowerMac to serve it? Or will I need a Duet
controller? The price differences are significant versus the two
systems (Airtunes versus Squeezebox) plus Airtunes has the advantage of
being able to run Apple DRM AAC files if I were to buy some from the
iTunes store in the future (currently it will only be running 300+ CDs
stored in Apple Lossless encoded from iTunes).

MVM

In my opinion the big advantage with SqueezeBox Controller compared to
the old IR based SqueezeBox remote is when you are browsing your music
library and doesn't know exactly what you want to listen to.

In this scenario the advantage of seeing several lines are huge. First
I thought of the Controller as a coverart browser, but when I've used
it a bit I've realize that the main advantage is not the cover art, the
main advantage is the fact that you see several lines.

A month ago the Controller was bad when you were scrolling long lists,
but during the last week acceleration has been added so this is no
longer a problem. So now I can also find a specific album that I'm
looking for faster with the Controller than the old IR-remote.

The searching(not browsing) functionality on Controller doesn't beat
the IR-remote with the LazySearch third party plugin yet, this is still
something that needs to be improved. Hopefully they are working on this
and I suspect the developer behind LazySearch might also be working on
a solution, so I suspect the Controller will get a satisfying solution
also for searching.

Personally I still feel that for browsing the currently most promising
solution is an iPod Touch/iPhone with the third party iPeng skin. The
larger screen with touch functionality is IMHO a big advantage. The
problem with the iPod Touch/iPhone solution is that it isn't as fast as
the Controller when navigating, the performance on a iPod Touch is
comparable to a standard PC with the SqueezeCenter web interface.
However, I know some people doesn't feel the same way as me regarding
the iPod Touch/iPhone solution, some like the fact that you can control
the Controller with a single hand while the iPod Touch/iPhone needs two
hands to be user friendly.

So to sum it up:
- The menu structure is basically the same on the Controller as with
the IR remote
- Browsing is a lot better on the Controller compared to the IR-remote
- Searching is currently better on the IR-remote, assuming you have the
LazySearch plugin installed.
- The Controller is faster than the IR-remote when navigating in the
menus

That's still possible, but you use search and scroll to the first
letter. With scrolling acceleration on the Controller I find it quicker
to just scroll there though.

Congratulations :-) It is more expensive but if you amortize the cost
by figuring that you'll be able to control four players then it's only
$25 per player.

I only have 400 albums but find it just as quick to locate a specific
one as it is with the IR remote and SB3 display. The two big advantages
to me are being able to view album art and not having to be in line of
sight of the player. The laptop, as you know, does those things
already, but sometimes it's nice to get away from the device you've
been using all day. For that reason I couldn't really see myself using
the phone I've had to my ear all day as a remote for listening to music
either. YMMV.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet and Remote - to buy or not to buy?

I find it much easier to use than the normal remote, firstly because
it's more responsive and secondly because I can see several lines at
once. Aside from those differences the navigation is currently quite
similar, with the same browse and search options. Text is entered
character at a time with the scroll wheel.

[slim] Squeezebox Duet and Remote - to buy or not to buy?

2008-01-16 Thread PLynas

I am interested in the new Squeezebox Duet with the new remote but am
undecided due to the high cost and not having seen the remote in
action. If anyone who has used the new remote could help me it would be
greatly appreciated. Apologies for the long post but I will try and
explain my setup and situation in detail as this will no doubt help
people to give me better advice. Thanks in advance.

I currently have 3 Squeezeboxes as follows:
Squeezebox V1 in my Living Room (occasional use as it competes with the
TV in there)
Squeezebox V2 in my kitchen (used pretty much every day when in there)
Squeezebox V3 in my Dining Room (main one, attached to my Hi-Fi
System).

I work from home in my Dining Room so use my Squeezebox in there a lot,
but as I am working from my laptop I control it from Slimserver on there
most of the time. (My main PC is in a different room).

When not working or when using one of the other two (less used)
Squeezeboxes I use the remote. This works ok, but I have a very large
music collection, so I tend to Browse using the remote, but generally
enter the first letter of an artist or album on the remote to get there
quicker. I presume that you cannot do this on the new remote.

However, I have been waiting for this remote to be released with some
anticipation, as I much prefer to use the Slimserver interface than the
remote, mainly because the location of my Squeezeboxes makes pointing
the remote and reading the screen very incovenient.

Also, I know I am thinking ahead a little here, but I have a new baby
daughter, and I intended to purchase another Squeezebox to put in her
nursery/room. (She does settle down to music so it is never too early).
For that one I am not bothered about a screen and would control it
myself anyway. But a Squeezebox Duet plus remote is still more
expensive than a single Squeezebox.

So I guess my question is - just how user friendly is the new remote?
Is it easy to find what you are looking for quickly if you have a large
music collection and does it offer a big advantage over using the
existing remote with the Squeezebox display? I am tempted to buy but it
is a lot of money and do not want to make an poor decision.

Hope this makes at least some sense. Any feedback is welcome.
