I understand this sentiment entirely - Apple and iTunes design things that the average user can pick up easily, hence the massive sales of iPods & iPhones over the last 10 years, I'm not a big apple user or fan but I understand this is one of their quality's. In terms of SB I think the generation of 'smart' playlists is a gap, however erlands plugins do overcome them but the general SB interface isn't as user friendly as iTunes and so lends itself to be 'geeky' However I think the Touch interface is great and iPeng compliments it very well, to the extend that my girlfriend is happy to use it. I set up the dynamic playlists that we listen to, this centers around rating songs and having top rated dynamic playlists -- socistep socistep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18860 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Many thanks for the encouragement. I won't sell my Touch just yet. I will do some more searching on these pages to figure out how to replicate the features of iTunes on my Squeezebox system. But herein lies the problem. It is not obvious to me how to do this, and I can see myself spending some hours figuring it out and then trying to convince my wife to jump in and follow me. No offense taken. But for the benefit of other readers of this thread, all the above is also easy to do with SqueezeBoxes as well. When I rip new CDs, they get automatically added to my "smart" playlists I've created with SqueezeboxServer and a couple of plugins. Very simple and powerful. p.s. I was fond of itunes too when I used only it. I've been able to easily replicate all the functions I used in itunes with SbS. YMMV. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox playlists no good for albums
I never find myself scrolling through huge lists of albums. But then I have mostly non-classical music and when I want to play an album I typically know which artist I want to play. So I almost always navigate via Artist, rather than dropping straight into Albums. I guess that doesn't work so well if you are into classical music. -- andynormancx Yes, it will. Yes, all of them. Re: [slim] Squeezebox playlists no good for albums
Thanks for all the good suggestions. No offence intended to anyone, but I think that Squeezebox is designed for geeks and iTunes is designed for real people. I am a geek, and for a long time I thought I was happy scrolling through 1000 albums on my Squeezebox looking for something that I was in the mood for. And I thought that Squeezebox was great. I bought one of the original SLIMP3's and I have been using Squeezeboxes ever since. My wife always refused to use the Squeezebox and I could never understand why. But then she introduced me to the wonderful world of iTunes and Macs and I discovered what she has been trying to tell me for years: The engineers in Apple design their gadgets to work in a way that is not only intuitive, but in a way that makes it easy for real people to use. Of course, I can "brute-force" squeezebox to allow me to do things like allocate sub-gendres, or I can stoically scroll through my 1000 or 10,000 albums and say that I am happy. But life can be better than that. With iTunes, I can create playlists of albums by simply clicking and dragging on my computer, and I can easly change my playlists as my moods change and as I buy and rip more CDs. iTunes is designed for real people and it makes life so easy. I have been a fan of Squeezeboxes for many years, but I am starting to realize that other products are moving faster than Squeezebox. If Apple develops a player like a squeezebox device that works with iTunes, squeezebox will be history. -- rodt rodt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3732 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It sounds as if you are using your iTunes "smart playlists" in the way that Genre categories are typically used. If you tag your Modern Classical albums with a genre of "Modern Classical", your Baroque albums with a genre of "Baroque" and so forth, you can then browse your albums by genre. This should give you what you're looking for. And yes, many of us have more than 1000 albums. I don't find it at all tedious to scroll through them to find the one I want. -- Dogberry2 Dogberry2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18883 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Also, you can't just "move" itunes playlists. they only "move" because you've integrated with itunes. But there is software out there that will convert itunes playlists to standard playlist format (m3u) and then you can copy these playlist files to the appropriate SbS directory and you're good to go. p.s. When I first started with squeezeboxes I'd been an itunes user. I hated SbS interface and wished I could make it all like itunes. After I explored and learned more, I found ways to get even better than itunes in terms of my use. Now I only open itunes to sync my iphones or ipods. Otherwise I never use it. Probably like going from windows to MAC or vice versa. You can do all the same stuff, but there is definitely a learning curve. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Sounds like that's what you do with smart playlists based on genres or subgenres. Also, it seems that if you have your genres set the way you want, clicking on one of these genres in the left window ("modern classical" or whatever) would then give you a shorter list of albums to choose from. This should be equivalent to a smart playlist based on genre. So to be clear, you've set SbS to integrate with ITUNES but it doesn't pull over the smart playlists? Does it pull over "regular" itunes playlists? -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox playlists no good for albums
Thanks for your comment. I am using the Squeeze Server on my Mac, alongside iTunes. Yes, I know how to play an individual album by going to "Albums". But I have about 1000 albums on my Mac and it is a real pain in the backside having to search through all 1000 of these albums on my Touch every time I want to listen to some music. Have you ever tried to scroll through 1000 albums? It is very very tedious! iTunes is more sophisticated and user-friendly than squeezebox because its "smart playlists" enable me to set up multiple playlists with different sub-sets of my 1000-odd albums. For example, I have one iTunes playlist containing about 300 "modern classical" albums and another playlist containing about 100 "baroque" albums, another playlist with about 50 "newly purchased albums, and so on. iTunes is beautifully set up for this kind of flexibility. I realy like it because if I feel like some "morern classical" music, I can just go to that playlist and look for the album that suits my fancy. It saves me from having to hunt through all 1000 of my albums every time I want to listen to some music. If you have a lot of albums, this makes a real difference. I tried moving my iTunes "smart playlists" onto Squeeze Centre, but all information about the albums is lost on the Touch screen. -- rodt rodt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3732 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox playlists no good for albums
The TOUCH will do exactly as you want. I listen to complete albums all the time (Although I personally don't try to integrate with itunes library as it seems more trouble than its worth). That said, both my itunes and SbS can point to the same exact MUSIC files, so I don't need duplicates of those. Are you running SqueezeboxServer(SbS) on a local computer or are you using the built in "tinySbS" of the Touch (i.e., with a USB drive attached directly too the TOUcH)? Either way, to play an entire album, you simply go to the menu item for either ARTIST, then select ALBUM, or go directly to menu item ALBUM and scroll to select ALBUM. Either way, when you hit PLAY, it will play the entire album. If you want to play several albums in a row, when you find the album, simply add it to the playlist (it will now show up on the right side of SbS screen (the "playlist"). You can add any number of albums to the playlist by finding other albums and "adding" these to the existing playlist window. Unless you've selected shuffle, SbS will then play all these albums in original track order. Are you not able to do this? Do you not see all your artists and albums listed in SbS when you browse by artist or album or genre, etc. Have you explored all the menu tabs and options in SbS > Settings? I assure you that you can get all the use value you are seeking from the TOUCH. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Squeezebox playlists no good for albums
Squeezebox is well suited to people who like to listen to individual songs. But it is not well designed for classical music lovers and others who like to listen to entire albums rather than just individual songs. What's worse, Squeezebox does not seem to integrate well with iTunes playlists. Can someone help me to fix the following problem: On iTunes I can easily set up a playlist that contains a number of albums. On my computer or on my iPod I can go to any playlist and see the list of albums that are on that playlist. I can either play the entire playlist or I can easly select an album from that playlist, and play that album. But on Squeezebox, the playlist ignores the albums and just presents me with a very long list of "songs". But classical music does not work like that - there is no such thing as an individual "song". Instead, there are movements that need to be played together, in sequence. Can someone help me? I want my Squeezebox Touch to be able to recognize individual albums on my playlists so that I can select an individual album and play it. And I would like to be able to create these playlists either on my Touch or using Itunes. The only solution I can think of right now is to sell my Squeezebox Touch on e-Bay and replace it with an ipod. -- rodt rodt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3732 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81778 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
