At the moment UE Smart Radio doesn't support third party plugins/applets
at all.

In theory, applets like scannerbox can probably work, but at the moment
you need to enable a development menu and install them manually through
ssh and the question is if the developer of scannerbox want to support
UE Smart Radio under these conditions.

Re: [slim] What features will no longer work if mysqueezebox.com is shut down?

2012-09-22 Thread Pale Blue Ego

I currently have 5 Slimdevices players, the newest being the SB3. I
would like to future-proof my system with another hardware player or 2.
Would it be best to just stick with the SB3? That way, I could possibly
use much earlier and simpler versions of the server software, maybe even
pre-mysqueezebox.com? Actually, it would be useful to know what the
earliest server version is to support each hardware platform. For
instance, the SB3 can use 5.41, but I assume the Touch can't. Does
anyone have this info, which version is required for the SB3 and which
version for the Touch?

I can't see many advantages to this. Unless maybe you specifically have
problems with the later software due library tagging issues that prevent
it from being scanned successfully.

I guess it depends if you like to be stuck in the past or if you like to
be able to move on to something new in the future, due to the closed
source firmware in Boom/Classic/Transporter I think they are less likely
to work with something new in the future.

Thanks, Erland. I'm currently running 7.5.2, so I already have support

AFAICT plugins are developed by people primarily for themselves and not
for reward. Then the plugin may be released to other users if there is
no likelihood of legal repercussion and /or developer is willing to
suppoirt users. I reckon supporting user takes way way more time than
devleopment time (and can be more frustrating).

Plugins to interface to commercial services such as Deezer could be
fraught with legal issues (e.g. possibility of copying) and using APIs
may require legal undertakings. I think the possibility of these issues
would deter developers.

Minor correction, you could use Spotify (Premium) with Triode's plug-in,
but the official app would no longer be available.
The only other service available via a plug-in rather than an official
app (as far as I am aware) is BBC iPlayer, also created by Triode.

I don't see WiMP on the list of apps in the UK. I presume it is only
available regionally to SE, DK, NO and DE?

LMS does not need MySB.com to play basic URL's, like those saved or
input into your LMS Favorites. But you will lose menu navigation of
everything within Internet Radio and My Apps absent MySB.com. The other
issue is subscription services handled by MySB.com (account login and
management).

You can emulate what LMS life will be like without MySB.com by simply
removing your MySB.com login info (or enter bogus login info) within LMS
 MySB.com.

Curious as to this, myself.

I'm not being all 'chicken little' here. But if mysb.com shuts down in
2 years, will my Touch and Radios still work at all after a reboot?

If I need to grab a spare player, should it be a Classic, or a Touch?

I'm pretty pissed about this development I use the Live365 plugin
every single day.

SB players will continue to function as they do now if using LMS server
with your local music.

Considering all the clever plugins availabe (which is one of the things
that makes the SB system so impressive) I wouldn't be all that surprised
to see someone coming up with a plugin or somesuch that made at least
some online services available to SB users even after MySB is dropped,
perhaps by mimicking a new Radio towards the new backend. Someone used
the term proxy and that sums it up pretty good I think.

How are you going to set up a Touch or Radio? One of the first steps is
to connect to mysb.com.

By the time MySB.com is actually gone there will be no Touch or SB Radio
players to buy to even need setting up. ;)

But should this be needed
- Touch can be updated via USB/SD absent any server.
- I believe both Touch Radio can be setup via a local LMS server by
getting them to their Home menu then selecting My Music, connect to LMS,
firmware is updated

I see.

Yesterday when all this was breaking news, I was in the midst of
browsing TigerDirect for a suitable UPS for a particular purpose. I
noticed they had the Touch available for a reasonable price, and when I
ordered my UPS I ordered a Touch. It will sit in a box along with my
OTHER spare Touch, although I may set both of them up temporarily in
order to update firmware.

I only have a few questions:

If/when mysqueezebox.com goes offline can I still listen to Internet
radio via LMS?

I assume LMS will last as long as you want it to (forever if you like)
and Logitech can't shut this down as it's downloaded software. There
will just be no further support (updates) for LMS. Correct?

DO I NEED TO TELL MY PLAYERS NOT TO AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE FIRMWARE AS I
DON'T WANT THEM TO GET THE NEW UE UPDATE?

Last point is crucial for continued LMS compatibility I feel.

Matt

Yes, you can use direct stream URL's in LMS absent MySB.com. The
problem would be subscription services.

No, SB hardware will not just update to UE some day. The only player
that is even capable of being updated to UE is the SB Radio, and I'd
guess that requires downloading the new UE server and connecting the
Radio to that new UE server, and might even be more involved than that,
I dunno.

Yes, in it's current form, as long as you keep the original LMS download
on your computer and you don't use LMS beyond it's current OS support.
Will LMS development, updates, bug fixes continue forever? Of course
not.

I still use some VHS tapes on occasion, but I'm not expecting any
firmware updates for that VHS player. ;)

I believe so. What I don't know is whether the firmwares obtained via
LMS are actually *included* in LMS.
IOW: LMS might be just pointing that player to it's appropriate
firmware located on a Logitech server online, possibly even MySB.com.

I read somewhere that LMS includes the firmware for older players
(transporter, SB3, boom) but NOT for touch and radio.

I suspect so too. I have both my touch and Radio connected to my local
LMS, and I have both Touch and Radio updating their firmwares some time
after I installed new releases of LMS. So it appears that Touch and
Radio get their firmware files from some other server out there.

Add the controller to that as well. Duet Receiver appears to get
firmware from LMS but Duet Controller appears to get it from a server
out there !!

That functionality could be returned in a third party plugin. Until
mysb.com disappears, there's no incentive for anyone to develop such a
plugin.

How about setting up a new Touch, if, say, I were to get a spare? I
remember having to enter a mysqueezebox.com user name and password, but
I don't know if this is strictly necessary.

It's not obvious, but mysb.com registration can be bypassed by swiping
the screen (L-R, IIRC) at that point in the setup.

I'm curious about this, as it isn't obvious on the surface what
functionality is being provided by mysqueezebox.com behind the scenes.
