Re: [slim] What software setup for a new HP Windows Media Server
Actually I'm running 7.3.2, which doesn't have the MSS add-in, but it runs fine - I access everything I need via the web interface. The recent work in 7.3.3 and 7.4 is only to further _simplify_ SC management on a WHS, not to enable it. Any version should run on the WHS. There is currently a bug in the WHS installer where it will list every version in the installed add-ins list unless you uninstall via the console before installing each update. If you don't update often, it shouldn't be a big deal to do it that way. With the WHS installer, you also get a Squeezecenter tab in the console which allows you to start/stop SC, run cleanup tasks, and a few other things. One thing to keep in mind, if you plan to use the PVConnect (Twonky server) that comes with the HP server, you will want to set Squeezecenter to use a different port. I tried running Twonky on a different port, but never could get it to work right, and ended up removing Twonky. Couldn't you still use your Netgear as backup for the MSS? Unless you plan to re-purpose the hard drives, of course. Thanks so much for the info. I am looking forward to diving in this weekend. As for the Ready NAS NV - it was always a little slow and problematic for me. At least half the time my backups ended up having issues. So I figured I would just update and re-purpose the disks. I am going to pop the empty nas with the gb of ram on ebay - if I get $200 I'll be happy for the year and a half of use I got out of it -- brdbointx brdbointx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9833 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60268 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You can either install it by remotely logging in via remote desktop (something new for me), or by using the WHS addin program launcher http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?autocom=downloadsshowfile=47 which allows you to access the MSS's desktop just like a regular PC. MSS will warn you that it's not recommended, but I haven't seen any problems. You will need need to right click on the install program to unblock it, i.e. let Windows Home Server trust it for installation. Also, make sure you choose to run Squeezecenter as a service. I'm not sure if you have that option at installation, but you can definitely run SqueezeCenter Startup Options from the Squeezecenter program list afterward. I have the Duet controller and it works beautifully with it. [slim] What software setup for a new HP Windows Media Server
I just decided to abandon my Netgear NAS NV+ and ordered one of the new HP Home Media Centers running Windows Home Server. The current downloadable release has a windows version. Is that what you download for the WHS? Is there a special way to install it? I saw one thread that talked about a WHS installer which I guess is in the nightlies? Can anyone explain the steps of installing with either of the current or nightly versions and the pros/cons of either. I appreciate it. I know my SC well, but I do not know WHS a all yet. I want to be able to hop right on it when it arrives on Thursday.
