Re: [slim] Work music setup
I think it will have to be a general agreement thing hour by hour. anyways, anyone actually got some ideas on how you would set this up? best way to connect several sets of speakers up to a SB? simply use phono splitters? we aren't looking for audiophile quality and I don't think the budget will allow for cat5. -- Gibbo Gibbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Work music setup
I'm quite suprised by peoples responses tbh. surely as music lovers none of you are limited to likeing only one genre? what would be so wrong about working in an environment with random play music on from a majority policed collection? you could eliminate anything that you hated, as could other people, i'm sure that would still leave a vast music collection to have playing. I like most things other than general chart stuff, ie pop and RnB, oh and UK garage. everything else i'll happily enjoy. Oh and only generally toxic stuff in the fumehood at the moment, nothing too specific, or lethal. -- Gibbo Gibbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Work music setup
Please don't think i'm offended in the slightest mark. I value peoples opinions and was just interested in more of an explanation. I missunderstood and thought you meant you wouldn't stand for anything other than your own music playing. I hadn't really thought about people wanting it to be silent. I guess to be honest where people are doing computer work etc it will be without music, but downstairs is only practical stuff, and I think people will be less inclined to want it silent. Maybe its unfair both ways, I personally can't work at my fumehood for long without music, and I know others are the same, at the computer is different, I like music but often find it irritating and I get frustrated with it. I think its a case of I need music when i'm doing practical stuff, so i'll be setting up a system, if the company are happy then i'll set up a SB system, if not maybe i'll do what I do now and have my ipod hooked up to some aego m's or something, and will have to arrange somtheing for everyone. -- Gibbo Gibbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Sorry Gibbo, I told you I meant no offence. It's me. I'm just extremely intolerant of it at work, even if it's stuff I like. I have had only slight exposure to it and it drove me bonkers. No offence but I'd expect a very high turnover. I know I wouldn't be able to work in such an environment for more than 15 minutes. It would drive me crazy, even background music. OOPS, small typo, erm, it was meant to say around 700 sq ft. 10 people in 70 sq ft would be a bit of a squeeze. no pun intended. Looks like the audioengine 2's have just about hit the UK market, they may prove a bit pricey though as for the size of room i'd guess we'd need about 2-3 sets. I like the idea of the SB as we don't really want a computer down in the lab, we have an office upstairs. even if it is just an old bits and bobs computer, it just seems like a far better idea to have a SB, much more user friendly etc. -- Gibbo Gibbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm not saying it's as good, although Squeezebox's sound is really nothing to write home about. You're going to need to have a hard disk in one computer containing the music files and on which to run SlimServer. So throw a sound card into it for playing background music. I'm guessing the input files are going to be low to moderate bitrate mp3's as well, so even more reason why there should be no noticable difference in sound quality. The Squeezebox serves a purpose. It's biggest reason for existing is for getting digital music stored on a PC in one location to play on a music system in another. If the lab setup fits this scenario, then by all means, spend the extra $230. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Go try and find any specs on the DAC in that card. 99% of them are cheapo garbage. The only one I know of that even talks about the dac inside their card is the top if the line Creative X-fi, and that costs as much as a squeezebox. I get your point about the noise in the lab, but any sound card that works as well or better than the Squeezbox for listening to audio is going to cost as much or more. Get a decent sound card if you think you can hear a difference playing background music in a chemistry lab with 10 people. An M-Audio Revolution for under $70 is very nice sounding card and probably overkill for this application. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40269 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Work music setup
I'm working for a company that in the next 6 months will move to a new lab (i'm a chemist) i'm trying to convince my boss that in a lab of around 8-10 people, around 70 sq ft at a vague guess, radio just will not do as not all the people will be happy listening to any station, and all will just get annoyed, and so we need a squeezebox set to random play, so people can just chuck their music on a NAS or computer upstairs and the SB downstairs can play from that. I'd like to know what people would do about speakers etc? given the job of setting it up yourself, what would you buy? you have £200 to get everything after you've bought the SB.
