Re: [slim] Low volume on synchronize
Grateful for any more ideas on this. This morning when I changed settings to synch my radio with my 2 other players the volume on the radio went down. When I then turned on my SB Classic (which is also synched to the radio and my boom) the volume on the radio went up again! The synch settings for all 3 players are set to "Don't sync player's volume". I'm confused! [slim] Low volume on synchronize
I have noticed that when I synchronize my radio or boom with my SB Classic the volume on the radio and boom is lower than when they are not synchronised. I have "Don't sync player's volumes" set but there still seems to be a volume adjustment when I synchronize the players. Any ideas why this might be happening? I am running 7.4.1 on OS X 10.6.2. It shouldn't matter which optical input you use - it makes sense to use the SA-CD/CD in for the squeezebox as that matches the purpose of music listening as opposed to TV/SAT, for example. Generally I run the squeezebox volume at full tilt for spdif output (optical/coax) - I believe that as this volume control, at least on the digital outs, reduces the signal resolution and therefore at some point introduces distortion, this is the best option. I believe Squeezecenter also has settings for the digital and analog volume outputs. Make sure both are set to 'fixed' and adjust you volume on the amplifier, where it generally makes more sense to do so. Also make sure that your amp doesn't have gain settings (attenuation levels) for each input. This could be causing the apparent signal level difference you are detecting. [slim] Low volume when using Optical audio output
Hello, I have a Squeezebox Classic. In the past, I was connecting it to my Sony STR-DA3100ES receiver via a Coaxial audio cable and everything was fine. I am now using the Coaxial audio cable for a different purpose so I purchased a good quality Optical audio cable (from Monoprice.com). To achieve the same volume with the optical output as what I used to get with the coaxial output, I need to push the volume on the Squeezebox all the way to +100 whereas it used to be on +1 or +2 before with the coaxial cable. The gain on my receiver is usually around -25db. Is it something normal? I don't think there is anything wrong with the cable itself because once the volume on the Squeezebox is +100, I can hear music just fine. But at +50 for instance, I can barely hear anything. Where am I supposed to plug the optical cable on my receiver? I have 4 optical inputs on the back of the receiver: - SA-CA/CD OPTICAL IN - MD/DAT OPTICAL IN - TV/SAT OPTICAL IN - DVD OPTICAL IN (but my DVD player is already connected via DVD COAXIAL IN) Does that make any difference where I connect the Squeezebox? You can certainly do that and the source volume certainly will impact the volume of sound output from the Duet. Look for a tool called mp3gain which will analyze your MP3's and can optionally make modifications to reach a desired average level. In my experience this tool will usually lower the volume of most data ripped from CD's and it does so to reduce the MP3 volume clipping that can happen. MP3 clipping will certainly deduce the quality of the output. If you are concerned about audio quality then you are better off using lossless encodings like FLAC. Re: [slim] Low volume output from the Duet
Thanks. I did not express myself clear. I don't use a phono input. What I meant is that I use the line/phono/audio OUTput from SB, as opposite to the digital output. I have it connected to a tape input. I'll check replay gain settings. Is it an idea to adjust the general volume level on the mp3 files or is this not advised to do? Will that cause distortion? Three potential issues: 1) You need to have the Duet at 100% volume to equal line-out volume of a CD player. Notice that a CD player normally has no volume control at all. 2) Try using an input on your receiver other than Phono. Phono cannot be used a 'just another aux' or 'cd' input. It is specifically for phonograph players only. 3) Replaygain settings. Try putting the Duet on your AUX or CD temporarily, make sure the volume control is at 100%, and finally make sure that 'replaygain volume adjustment' is disabled. You can check this at Settings->Player->Audio->Volume Adjustment/ReplayGain. HTH, Ben ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Low volume output from the Duet
Hi, I just got SB Duet and have a question. Is there any volume limitation on the output (phono out) on this device? Compared to other sources (radio, cd) on my stereo the Duet has very low volume, and I have to increase to max on the controller to get anywhere close the the level from other sources. Still that isn't enough to get the same volume level. I've even tried to turn off any volume adjustment to see if that made any difference. It did not. Nobody seems to take this serious, a bit strange there is not more users with the same problem. It states in the info on the SB3 that it has "full 6.0V" analog out. Dont know what they mean with "full" because my Philips dvd963SA , with 2V out on the analog plays A LOT LOUDER than the SB3.. jlrood, I know exactly what you mean, when I listen with headphones for instance via my Bryston, the level at 11.00 with the Philips equals that of 15.00 with the SB3. Are you plugged into an AV receiver? Many of them have way of adjusting the relative volume of each input via the setup menu in order to balance them all out. On my Integra receiver it is called "Intellivolume" and I can adjust each input from -6db to +12db. Very useful. -- Rick B.
