Re: [slim] repair of squeezebox?

Agreed (about the wireless). Name brand *stereo* blue tooth combos are
about $100US (transmitter receiver). And, with that setup you can
probably pair your receiver with your cellphone.

Most *stereo* head phones I've seen have remote control capabilities.
But (as intreaging as it sounds) integrating that into a SqueezeCenter
network would be difficult.**

**(You probably need access to the blue tooth receiver guts to do
this. I can only think of one possible way: Use a iPod blue tooth
transmitter and decode the iPod's serial port control emanating from it.
You still need to get that back to the SqueezeCenter software running
on your computer / server box. Best way, probably, would be to develop
the ASK IR codes and blast the SB w/them. Hum, probably could do that
w/a 8051 derivative chip, PIC or Atmel easy. Hum, this might not be a
bad project after all.)

Re: [slim] repair of squeezebox?

Hello ,
I would suggest to put some pictures of opened SB with loosed (and
fixed) connectors on our forum to see what could possibly go wrong,
just for knowledge base.
I also advice against wireless headphones, since SB is used primarily
for lossless files and quality listening which wireless heads are not
able to provide.

Cheers!

Thank you!
I was just about to send my Squeezebox in for repair when I read your
post and decided to try DIY repair once more (I had already tried
removing the network card and reseating various connectors).
In my previous efforts, I missed seeing the connector between the
mainboard and the daughter card (I assumed the two were soldered
together). Re-seating the daughter card in its socket did the trick.
Now I can put my CDs back in storage ;).

Re: [slim] repair of squeezebox?

Since it has stopped working as a result of falling off your bedside
table, it may be a simple matter of the wireless card coming dislodged
or something similar.

The screws aren't standard phillips, but are a standard Torex driver
you can get in any hardware store.

Since it is out of warranty, it might be worth popping it open and
checking out if it is something simple to fix.

I'll take a look at mine too, and see if its something simple.
I can solder a bit if I need to or maybe like you mention, the card is
dislodged. It won't hurt to take a look. Thanks everybody. I'll post
back what I learn when I figure it out.

Re: [slim] repair of squeezebox?

2009-01-12 Thread deserttaxguy

I took your advice and opened up the Squeezebox. If your SB is acting
dead go ahead and look. There are very few visible connections but I
found two that where loose on my box. Heres what I looked at.
1.) I opened it up and there was a little foam sticky contact switch on
the face of the network card that was obviously open. Stick it back
together.
I tried again to re-power. No logo screen, no function.
2.) Open up the unit again. The electronics from ROM module to the
network card are stacked on top of each other. If you look in between
there is a small white square connector. Mine was not disconnected, but
had worked loose. I gently pushed it together slightly with a probe and
tried to power up again.

All is good again. As soon as i put the power cable on, the logo screen
came right up. Logged on my network as it should and now I'm back in a
happy mood.!
My remote is still not working right though, but I will try the
alternates or just buy an new one on the site here. Thanks everybody.
Go ahead and take a look at yours if you are having a similar problem.
It only took 5 minutes to fix.

Re: [slim] repair of squeezebox?

2009-01-12 Thread Melor

Yippeee for you! Glad to hear of your good fortune. I have a SB Boom and
a Duet and am in love... Thus am happy for your success...

I listen to my SB Boom on my nightstand, but when my wife wants quiet
sleep with headphones and my iPod, which I keep under the covers so as
not to pull it off the nightstand. Not a good idea with a Squeezebox of
any kind, however. Sometimes my iPod falls between the mattress and the
headboard, which is a pain to retrieve, sometimes I wake in the middle
of the night with a headphone cord wrapped across my face or neck...
Not a pain per-se, but definitely a weird bedtime experience...

I have found through experience the best headphones to listen to when
falling asleep are the street style, behind the head, type. The
headpiece rides on the back of the neck and is much more comfortable
than the over the head type. Not hi-fidelity, but a cheap pair from
Target does the trick and if I ruin them in my sleep, I won't cry. What
kind of nighttime headphones are you using?

Back to work for me! Enjoy your music tonight.

Paul

[slim] repair of squeezebox?

2009-01-11 Thread colville1

I have a squeezebox v3. It's been a great machine, so great that I fall
asleep to it with headphones on, then when I wake up I end up pulling
the device off the night table. Finally with one thud after another,
it's given out, doesn't seem to power on anymore. Is there a place I
can send it for repair? Is there anything that I can do in terms of
opening it up (that seems hard enough). Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

You should phone Slim Devices tech support
(http://www.slimdevices.com/su_tech.html#phone). For a lot of
out-of-warranty repair they will fix things for a flat US$90 fee, plus
shipping and handling.
