Okay I am sure that the regulars get absolutely sick of people like
me... I am a newbie to the world of Squeezebox. I have wanted one for
 ages.

The dream was always to get some NAS turn my CDs into Lossless files
and then connect (via wireless) my Squeezebox to the NAS and
 way-hey!

Well the first step was always to buy the NAS and turn the CDs into
Lossless files. I can then carboot the CDs and save for a Squeezebox.
So I have. The best value NAS that I could get was a 4tb BlackArmor NAS
 220.

 Specifications:

I wanted to link to the specs but I am not allowed...

Now having got the NAS I have begun to think about the Squeezebox
end and it is now that I discover about the Squeezebox Server.
Thinking logically perhaps I should have realised that cars do not run
on fairy dust and Squeezebox will need some software to order and
access massive memory files on NAS.

SBS can run on Windows Home Server and Netgear's ReadyNAS... but not
 the Seagate.

Can I make it run (without having a puter turned on)?

 How?

What is it going to cost, perhaps I should sell my shiny new NAS and
 buy Netgear NAS (expensive)?

 HELP

 PLASE!
Back to your original query...

Wow! Do you really need 4TB? If not, and you can sell your shiny new
NAS at not too much of a loss (presumably you have the original
packaging) you could buy the Synology DS109 for about £160 (street
price) and a 2TB drive for £90, total £250.

Synology provide a free SBS installation file which is just a couple of
clicks to install and works fine in my setup.

A readynas Duo with 2x2TB disks (if you DIY) will cost you around
£315+PP (Dabs) but I would dispute the need for a two drive unit in a
domestic environment. No need to go RAID as long as you have a backup
strategy, so no need for a 2 disk machine (unless you need the full
4TB).

If you do need 4TB then the advice to go the SheevaPlug route is sound.

It is an odd proposition. I wholeheartedy am against copyright theft -
I work in publishing and IP is at the heart of our business - I struggle
to stop my 13 yearold daughter downloading films, or watching US
programmes before they are released here ...

However my fine upstanding model citizen mother, when I explained the
concept of my Squeezeboxes to her, and showed her my CDs all neatly
stacjed in a cupboard out of the reach of children (see here for why :)

immediately suggested that I give them to a charity shop, and throught

At some point our copyright laws and/ or music distribution needs to
catch up with current usage. I buy physical CDs (often second hand) as
it is the most efficient way to get high bit rate music... but I don't
necessarily want to buy things that I rip once then need to archive,
which itself is legally dubious ...

Loosetooth your absolutely right. The more laws brought in the more
likely it is that we are all eventually criminalised.
Our last government went law happy here.

Not sure about the Welshman in Worcester - I can see the logic in it,
but...

Anyway, it is definitely illegal in almost all countries. However, I'd
say the chance of detection punishment is effectively nil.

I think that Radiohead CD's should be destroyed anyway, but that's just

You can try to rationalize it by drawing imaginary lines between what
you are proposing and illegal downloads (post #6), or buying new CDs
and selling them after converting them to FLAC (post #9). But none is a
more virtuous form of copyright infringement than the other.

There is actually a dedicated forum for 3rd party hardware including
NAS.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

Also, here is a link to a beginers guide
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Beginners_Guide_To_Servers#NAS_Devices

and list of compatable NAS
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/NAS_Compatibility

I dont run a NAS so other than the links, im afraid im not much help

Re: [slim] Basic Squeezbox Facts.....?

2010-09-03 Thread Zoltan

If you want a cheap platform for SBS you could consider going along the
SheevaPlug route. Look in the 3rd party hardware forum for lots of
info.

You could run this alongside your NAS. You will probably find this to
be a less painful route than trying to get your NAS to run SBS (I have
no experience but my impression is that even compatible NASes sometimes
have performance problems). Meanwhile you keep your NAS to do the job
it is good at.

H the compatible devices list is an eye opener and one thing that I
should have seen before I went a NAS hunting... It does look as though
the SheevaPlug is the way forward, but it is a pity because I paid about
£260 for the Nas the SheevaPlug will come in at about £100 I am
sure for £360 I could have gotten a Netgear ReadyNas Duo and 2 x 2tb
disks

Nope, I'm not a police officer. And yes, it's entirely up to you if you sell
them.

If you bought them, burnt a copy, and then sold the original at a car boot
sale, would that be Ok too?
