separate the audio stream from the video.

I'd guess if there were a big enough market for it (and assuming there
were no licensing issues) someone would have come up with an aggregator
service to provide this.
Like RadioTime but for TV broadcasts.

But I'd bet there are a number of issues preventing this:
- legal/licensing
- few broadcasters (if any) are offering audio only feeds
- if broadcasters offered such online content it would likely be
restricted to embedded players
- TV broadcasting is a visual medium, audio only would make it's most
important aspect (i.e. commercials) much diminished
- limited consumer interest in audio only TV re-broadcasts

As suggested, using computer cable cards and tuners or with some of the
current online content, it is likely doable. But the workaround seems
awfully complex and limited.

I can see some peoples attraction to this whole concept, but personally
I use my SB players to get away from the very same TV content others
want to add to SB players.

Low Power independent TV stations were exempt from the US FCC mandated
switch to all digital by the June 12th 2009 date.
They must switch eventually, but like the big digital switch that was
delayed a number of times you can bet any such Low Power station
mandated switch date will likely be pushed back a number of times.

this may be heretical, but at least it's simple: Take a smartphone with
wifi, tune in the desired program via hulu.com, nbc.com, or other site,
and then put the phone face down on the bedside table.

Well at least in much of the US, those radios don't work any more.
(Areas served by reduced power translators may still get signal, but
major metro areas have DTV now, which would need a new radio and I
haven't seen any of those.)

Add in that cable sort of sucks and 'cable cards' are often needed to
get cable on a PC, since many of them have switched away from old analog
formats. (Ie cable ready TV no longer means what it used to mean.)

This is progress supposedly.

Honestly, I've never seen a TV Band Radio here in Germany. I do know
people, however, who have their TV running all the time with the audio
turned -off-. *g*

As for your question - is the TV program you want to listen to
available as a video stream on the internet? In that case it should be
fairly easy to grab the audio of that stream from the video player with
the Wave Input plugin and redirect it to your Squeezebox.

Re: [slim] I'd Like to Listen to Television Audio on my Boom

2010-01-25 Thread funkstar

There are a few pretty complex ways to get this working, and one simple
way, but no I don't think there are any audio only streams of TV
stations (not that I've ever heard of anyway.

The simple way would be to take the audio output of a cable or
satellite box and feed it to the Booms line input.

The complex solutions involve TV capture hardware on a PC and several
layers of software to extract the audio. All possible, but not easy.
