Re: [slim] iPhone users - iPeng or Material UI?

2020-12-14 Thread Michael Herger

Having both is fine for me, but too much choice for the family.

Which would you sugest, for ease of use, and getting where you want to
get to with the fewest clicks, for family members?

I have both on the iPad's first page. Kids mostly use Material. I'm
hardly using mobile control any more... sitting a the desk all the
time... and in the kitchen I listen to radio, using a preset. So my
personal use on mobile is Material when I know I want to access
settings, otherwise pretty random.

Sorry, I was probably polluting this thread with a general comment
rather than offering an immediate solution. My point was that it is not
a major task to modify the code of the various html skins to allow
playback through the audio element if a developer wished to do this.
Whether they think it's a good idea and/or want to do it is of course,
an other issue.

Hi,

@JerryS: would be nice if you would elaborate a little on your advice,
where and how do you activate this?

another possibilty which would of course work to play music on an iphone
is with forked-daapd,
(I have on the same server side by side with lms forked-daapd running
exposing all my m4a/aac audio tracks which are also
accessible under lms)

on the iphone, use the apple remote app to connect and control forked
daapd,..

than activate in the forked-daapd web interface streaming to
http://serverip:3689/stream.mp3
and make a safari shortcut on the iphone to that same adress, once you
start it, it plays locally
on the iphone and can be controlled with the apple remote app,

you might also have a look here https://github.com/trenskow/AirFloat

this app turns your iphone into an airplay receiver and works quite well
together with the
airplay bridge (squeeze2raop) lms plugin from philippe_44,

in the issues section of the github repo are some recipes how to compile
the app with xcode developer versions up to xcode8 and ios10,..

it is quite nice to give old hardware a new life again, especially as
the dac hardware of the older
iphones sounds really good,..

That works great.

Not sure I can get it working as a player easily.
I did think I might be able to get the iPhone to behave like it is a
Airplayer with a different app.
But it looks a bit difficult.

The other thing I did in Safari was to open to :9000/stream.mp3
This seemed to identify the 'player', but I couldn't get it to play
anything.

Are you using a separate subset of music on your iOS device?
If so you could always run mp3tag across the whole lot and use the
Convert facility to re-tag replacing track artist with artist sort
before putting it onto the phone.

Would you happen to know if the Neutron app uses the Artistsort tag to
sort artists by surname? That is the only thing that keeps me using the

Re: [slim] iPhone music playback app - any recommendations?

2019-05-18 Thread chill

I transferred my entire music library to my phone - I didn't realise I
had so much space! That's a result of finally giving up on iTunes when
I first got this phone - there's been no music on it all since then, and
I've relied on Spotify.

I'm really liking 'Neutron Music Player'
(https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/neutron-music-player/id766858884). It
scanned everything into its database in much the same way that LMS does.
The library statistics are slightly different from what LMS reports, so
I guess there are some differences in the handling of tags.

It is highly configurable - in some cases it's almost as though it's
been inspired by LMS. Here's the screen for defining which options show
up in the media library:

[image:
http://www.cjh.me.uk/MyPhotobucket/cache/DIYHifi/iPhone/Neutron1_256.jpg]

There are so many options that I've barely scratched the surface so far,
but as a convenient way to carry my library around with me, without
having to bend over backwards to adapt my library structure to suit, it
seems ideal.

Now that my entire library, albeit in compressed form, is on the phone,
it'll make its way to iCloud, probably over several nights, so that'll
be yet another backup :)

It looked promising until I got down to the end of the description:
> (*) FLAC, OGG, MPC, TTA, WV, APE, OPUS formats are supported in
> FolderBrowser mode only.

But I've found an app that appears to satisfy all of my original
requirements. Neutron Music Player. Not free, but it seemed to tick
all the boxes in the description, so I took a chance. I can upload
files via FTP, with a complete folder tree. It has no problem with my
OGG+CUE combinations, and recognises all my tags in the cue files.
Tracks are listed in the order given in the cue files. And it even
likes my folder.jpg cover art.

In addition it offers things I wasn't really concerned about, but which
could be useful, such as various DSP effects, including an equalisation
function with options for presets. The interface will take a bit to get
used to I think, but it seems like a good investment so far. I've only
loaded a few folders onto it for now, so will load up a larger selection
to see how it copes with a bigger library.

Thanks

Yeah, Foobar2000 looks good, but doesn't appear to support cue files.
I'd prefer not to have to split my OGG files, but it's an option.
Currently I simply convert my whole album FLACs to whole album OGGs, and
edit the cue file to match the new file extension, but if splitting the
FLAC is the best way I may go down that route.

VOX came up in my searches, but I'm afraid I'm struggling to get content
into it! I'm not interested in their cloud storage option, or their
Spotify options - all I want is locally stored music, and it only seems
to offer to import my iTunes media library. I don't have an iTunes
media library. Their help page for importing music is giving me an
'Oops!' error.

Foobar2000 - plays almost anything - incorporates an FTP server to

No, unless you enable an equalizer or use replay gain in LMS, iPeng

Thanks
Generally I use other players - sb3, Pi etc - with iPeng as the
controller but I do use iPeng in playback mode and headphones when my
wife is watching TV in the same room.
I’ve got the camera kit and use a hifime usb DAC with my b&w p7s but
this isnt ideal as the volume is a little limited. The apple lightning
adapter seems to allow a little more volume presumably because it
doesn’t use much current but like you suggested I think the SQ is
reduced.
What I’m looking for is something like the hifime - does 96/24 - but
allows more volume.
I have Bose QCs which are Bluetooth for travelling purposes.

No, I usually don’t. I do have an old Pure digital docking adaptor (with
DAC) I used for a while and which I still use for testing and I do have
an external DSD DAC I use for testing but I’ve got so many good,
dedicated players around here that I can’t even use all of those so
beyond testing things I don’t actually use iPhone accessory DACs.

What do use a lot with iPhone, iPad and iPod is headphones but the are
either Apple‘s or indeed analog headphones I use with this Apple
adapter.

Hard to know for certain since it's hard to debug, but I'd be extremely
surprised if it's more than 48/16.
That's what AirPlay uses (44.1/16 and 48/16 as ALAC) and my guess is iOS
transcodes to that before the DAC.

There have been comparison tests with older iPhone DACs and the DAC in
the adapter seem to be inferior. Which isn't really surprising given the
ultra-small package size and power availability.

That's usually how these things work under iOS, iOS transcodes to
whatever capability the chosen audio route supports.

iPeng currently supports up to 96/24 natively but that's going to change
in the future, at least optionally.

Re: [slim] iPhone 7

2016-09-15 Thread pippin

But for all other applications: since in most applications you are using
class-D amps anyway these days you can do away with a lot of lossy
analog signal handling if you go digital these days.
In the past the limiting factor was the need for a digital deceive
creating the input bitstream for the amp but today this is so cheap and
power efficient it's really the way you want to go. Especially since you
can program that to double as a digital filter to adapt to the speaker's
transmission curve, something you'd otherwise do with expensive, power
consuming and tolerance-challenged analog filters.

Re: [slim] iPhone 7

Yes. Saves a lot of power compared to DAC+amp which is pretty important
on mobile.
That said... It performs better if you can adapt the filter used to the
(known) speaker so it's a more likely candidate for built-in speakers
and digital headphones.
For the adapter I'm wondering whether you really need an amp or whether
a DAC can simply take the current needed (and provided by the phone).
Then you could just have only a DAC...

How much power does an headphone amp have to have? Do they need a
separate amp for that or can they just drive it through the DAC?
If they need an amp my bet is there won't be a DAC.

However, they aren't removing analogue, just the headphone jack. When
you plug the supplied Lightning headphones into the iPhone 7 they'll be
supplied with analogue signals over the Lightning interface. There is no
DAC and electronics in the Lightning headphones they supply.

There are DAC equipped Lightning headphones out there, but you can still
have plain old analogue over Lightning (and could do before the iPhone
7). You can also do analogue over Lightning, while also charging the
phone, but sadly not with the adapter that Apple are providing in the
box.

Yes, it will. Yes, all of them. Yes, SoftSqueeze as well. What ?
I SAID ALL OF THEM !

Re: [slim] iPhone 7

2016-09-10 Thread epoch1970

I remember the original MBA, which I bought in 2008. No CD-rom, no
ethernet. So much public outcry... I did use the ethernet adapter, but
the optional USB CD-Rom I used maybe only once a year.

I'm not bothered at all with the lightning connector. Headphone makers
sell products at ludicrous prices, a little less snake oil and a little
more R&D and differentiation won't hurt any.

That keynote event, though... I had to cut the audio at times.

You are sure they use a DAC? OK, it might save them a few cents but it
draws more power than a direct class-D-amp for each speaker and power
saving is sacred in a phone...

I think it needed more pull from vendors which is what Apple usually
like to be seen to be at the front - even Ikea offers wireless stuff.

Google's explanation why they omitted wireless chrging in 5x is a bit
lame - wireless was originally included becuase users couldn't plugin
USB correctly however now with type C stupid users can plug phones in to
charge.

There are still many phones offering wireless but obviously for the
vendors irt does not have enough of a wow/newness factor to sellphones
whereas Apple has instead discovered bokeh is now trying to sell it as a
mystical way of making better photos - personally easier charging is
more useful than bokeh.

Ah. Now I totally agree about the interference issue. I have a very nice
portable headphone amp. Won't work with an iPhone due to mobile signal
interference but works perfectly with iPod Touch and iPad with iPeng.

So I think we are saying that the iPhone 7 won't have a headphone jack
but there will be a lightning adapter in the box. I suppose the real
question is will that adapter (with in built DAC and amp?) be as good as
the onboard DAC & amp?

Now that even die-hard fanboys are critical of Apple because of the

Doing away with the outdated and expensive analog audio chain is long
overdue and this move, which will make digital audio transfer more
attractive for a few hundred million people will help with that.

This whole thing with DACs, amps, cables and so on, all this expensive
stuff that only adds up losses is so last millennium. These days you
could build so much better audio devices at so much lower cost if you
built a digital speaker and the technology has been there for 20 years,

Sad how Apple's solution for the problems they have created is using
dongles. Seems absurd that to listen to music and charge the phone at
the same time we would need to resort to at least two dongles! This one
plugged into the lightning port:
http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F8J198/?clickid=whjX7vxU2T7fXWI2Wdz-6Q-3Ukk1CSS11Sa-Vs0&utm_campaign=Online+Tracking+Link&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=impactradius&irgwc=1&clickid=weOTBpxlKUjSVJkS19XbDwkgUkk1CHT1QWOf3w0&utm_campaign=Online+Tracking+Link&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=impactradius&irgwc=1

Apple's dongle plugged into it and the headphones plugged into that.
Steve Jobs must be turning over in his grave. There is absolutely no
consumer benefit to this move. After using iphones since the 3GS I have
seriously been exploring switching to Android. Unfortunately, my car
stereo does not support Android except through the aux port and of
course there is no Ipeng for Android. My 6+ is still working fine and
maybe I will have calmed down by the time it needs replacing but Apple's

Re: [slim] iPhone / iPad digital out: any experiences?

2016-06-03 Thread pippin

Should be pretty straightforward indeed.
There are few docks (when the Lightning Connector was introduced docks
had already come out of fashion and you probably don't want to use a
straight cable to your DAC (because you can't charge then) but otherwise
all newer iPhone models and all iPads make for pretty good players.
iPeng currently supports 96kHz/24Bit playback, we might up that to
192kHz in the future although it's a bit of a bandwidth/load tradeoff
(that's almost the data rate of an HD video stream and iThingies
obviously only have WiFi).

I've written an article about it when we first introduced the HD
playback in iPeng. It's a bit outdated, most of the limitations on the
iOS side no longer exist today but the general capabilities are all
still there.

That was actually a design decision by Logitech. If you used iPeng the
same way as the Logi App (adding through the context menu) it did not
happen.

Tried it right now and I'm surprised it looks like it works correctly in
iPeng now, maybe Logitech changed the design.

It's a free party App that came out almost a year ago. It does
everything that will not destroy your current playlist.

Honestly, the interface didn't seem so friendly. for my friends passing

rhapsody instead of the one chosen song. i havent used it in a while

least it goes into Landscape view.

Re: [slim] iPhone App Keeps Demanding mysqueezebox.com Email Address and Password

2012-08-01 Thread Zonker92

Thanks, Pippin. Yes, it is now working fine, and is no longer demanding
my credentials. I am keeping my fingers crossed. (Even when it was
demanding my credentials, it would work properly after I entered them.)

I'm at least glad to know that this is not the normal behavior. That
would have been a deal-breaker for me, since we have a houseful of
people trying to use the app and blaming me for that annoying habit. :(

Thanks!

Re: [slim] iPhone App Keeps Demanding mysqueezebox.com Email Address and Password

2012-08-01 Thread pippin

Does it actually work after you entered the credentials?

I don't know what the reason is (probably an issue with keeping the
App's self-generated ID) but I've heard this before, seems to be a bug
that affects some users.

Yes, definitely with two or more routers in the same network, you must
be sure that DHCP is turned OFF on all but one of the routers. You only
want a single router handing out IP addresses. Two routers independently
handing out IP addressses could cause real havoc in a network.

Can't say I figured it out but it's now working.

I have a escalated ticket with Logitech over the issue. After doing
some googling I found out that some folks were having the same issue
when two devices capable of routing were in their networks. I have a
Westell modem and an Airport Extreme. The AE has been buggy since
iCloud was rolled out; so I made Westell the router and turned off
routing functions on the AE. After doing this, then resetting the SB
Duet a couple of times I was able to get in with my iPhone and iPad.

2012-01-11 Thread snpower

Well I found it... was originally looking at LMS preference pane in OSX,
not the web server. However, there is no password protection set. I even
activated it, then tried logging on and it still would not accept my
username and password. Then I turned it back off... same thing.

I just tried this using my iPodTouch (v3) with iPeng 1.3.1. I didn't
have a dock to test with, but using a std Apple component AV cable
(dock connector in, R+L audio out, component video out), it worked like
a charm. No problems.
