previous 2 posts, so please Export your entire

2009-02-17 Thread Moonbase

Hm. I#8217;m using Windows/XP (German), recently upgraded from SP2 to
SP3 and never had this problem. In Control Panel/Automatic Updates,
I#8217;ve set »Notify, but don#8217;t download or install
automatically«.

Works as advertised. Sometimes a balloon pops up informing me of new
updates and whenever I wish, I download and install it.

Not sure if these work once the nag is already triggered, but worth a

One nice thing in Vista, it has a postpone 4 hours option, and it won't
restart if you walk away.

Sometimes, a workaround is to run a program that refuses to quit (e.g.
due to unsaved data), this can keep the PC from shutting down. But if
you are unlucky, your other process quits anyway when it gets the
 shutdown message.

Damn - that's really annoying :(

Bloody hell - looks like I stand corrected. Even when I did have
automatic updates switched on, I only ever allowed them to be
downloaded, never automatically installed.

That an OS can take it upon itself to unilaterally reboot your machine
without your explicit consent is outrageous.

Are you sure? It's ages since I allowed automatic updates on any of my
PCs, but my recollection is that you can ignore it and restart when
you're good and ready. My advice to the OP is to carry on ignoring it
and let your sync continue.

Moral of the story: switch automatic updates off. Microsoft has a
history of sending out patches for obscure vulnerabilities (many of
which haven't actually been exploited), and in the process break
something that people really do use.

Yeah, my husband's computer is still on XP and it happens to him once
in a while. Even though he turns off auto-install, every now and then
it gets reset and it will reboot when he's away from it.

When I uploaded around 20GB to MP3Tunes last year I had several

Turned out to be a waste of time because I didn't think the service was
worth it after the free trial period ended, but that's a different

I let it reboot and predictably it XX up the sync (as usual Oboe
was unresponsive - it is SO sensitive). Couldn't get it to pick up
again.

I've now had to clear the local cache (2+ files) and LockerSync is
rescanning the whole collection :(

Have to leave work now so can't continue uploading until next week.

Bollocks.

Right click on my computer, select properties, Automatic Updates and
Turn off Automatic Updates. I'm not sure this will kill the reboot
message after an update has occurred.

Re: [slim] Urgent Windows XP help needed please !

2009-02-13 Thread Brian Ritchie

I guess I must be lucky: every time I've had the must reboot for
updates to take effect message, it hasn't come with a threat to reboot
by default if I do nothing (on any of the WinXP boxes I use). So to
stop it from popping up every 10 minutes, I shove the little bastard
over to the edge of the screen so only a tiny sliver is showing, and
leave it there until I'm ready. (Sometimes I leave it like that for
several days).

Even so, I actually wince whenever the updates are ready to download
balloon pops up. It's even more annoying than the one that tells me
whether or not I have a wireless connection (given that it's usually
bloody obvious).

I don't want to disable update checks completely, but it's nice to find
a way to stop the reminder.
