Re: [slim] Where will the Squeezebox be assembled in the future?

2007-02-23 Thread gbruzzo

Bear in mind, that I have a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard. And these work
fine, mighty fine, but...

Logitech branded Squeezeboxes? YUCK!
Logitech branded Transporters? YUCK!

As much as Logitech tries what they produce is most definitely not
high-end. Good quality, but NOT high-end.

I hope you are speculating...are you?

These components (at least the Transporter) are high-end. If they
change that (including their being assembled in the west) then I am
most certainly off to buy other products.

In another thread Sean has said that as the need arises more and more
assembly of the Squeezebox is being done in China, largely based on
manufacturing efficiency. The Transporter is currently being assembled
in CA with some locally sourced components (the chassis) and with
foreign components and assemblies.

Some snobs are not so much concerned with quality but more with the
status of the badge that's on it.

Funny thing is that with modern digital technology that concept is more
or less outdated. What's the best mobile phone? A Sony Ericsson? A
Nokia? A Samsung? You can buy it for less than a 1000 bucks, and no
matter how much more you'd be willing to spend, you can't buy anything
better! Is there anything more pathetic than this?

http://www.engadget.com/2005/02/07/the-54-000-diamond-crusted-samsung-sph-e3200/

That's why the real snobs don't go digital at all:

Digital is the great equalizer... ;)

I'm surprised it hasn't it been cloned/reverse engineered yet, being

Just imagine: Zhaolu Network Streamer! $100 indeed. Head-Fi will burst
with thousands of discussions. Nobody will notice that it's not exactly
the same design, somewhat simplified approach with less attention to
quality, PLL design instead of dedicated crystals, etc But who

And how is being assembled in the west make it high-end? It only makes

I think it's a fair guess that Logitech wouldn't sell a lot of $300
Squeezeboxes in stores. Moving the manufacturing of the current
Squeezebox design to China and taking advantage of economies of scale
could easily cut that price in half. I'm guessing there may also be a
cheaper design in the works (although there's not much you can remove
from a Squezebox - maybe the digital out).

As for the Transporter - who knows. The Logitech branding alone could
kill the product (damned snobs). Even more so than the $300
Squeezebox, there's no place for a $2000 music player in the common
retail outlets like Best Buy and Circuit City. Cut that price to $1000
and it wouldn't make much difference. I don't see it making much
headway into audio shops, so the only viable means of distribution will
likely continue to be direct sales.

Re: [slim] Where will the Squeezebox be assembled in the future?

2007-02-23 Thread gbruzzo

the thread will not degenerate!

I have used Logitech peripherals for a long time, and some of them are
quite appealing (The latest MX revolution mouse is quite a good
product). I second what you say about the new plexiglass bluetooth
keyboard. Some of my comments were (willingly) cast with the aim of
provoking some reaction (and they did!).

It may well be that the Transporter has a future among some of the more
sophisticated products that Logitech has been developing of late (MX
revolution mouse, super keyboard etc) most of which are priced
accordingly.

I just have the feeling that a complete rebrand would not be in line
with the image of Slimdevices (at least as far as I perceive it - there
maybe margins for debate here!). Somehow I resisted buying any of the
other offerings (Roku, Sonos etc) because
a) the company is run by maniacal audiophiles with an understanding and
love of high end kit;
b) a large portion of the community consists of very helpful and
equally maniacal users, many of which possess a strong inclination
towards understanding and modifying the products (both hardware and
software);
c) the products (initially SB3 and now a Transporter as far as I am
concerned) are actually quite spectacular.

I dread an excess of product "homogenisation", which may (but then
again might not!) strip this remarkable community of its quirkyness and
originality, by sinking Slimdevices into the vast sea of Logitech
products. As I said above, Fiat may own Ferrari, but Ferrari-engined
Fiats (they have existed) were never very successful...

Regards,

Giacomo

Weird how brand names affect things... the Logitech brand would
certainly do better in a BestBuy, but not for expensive stuff...

On the other hand, if they label it right, "Logitech SlimDevices" or
something, they may do okay in high end audio shops: many of them do
sell Harmony remotes which are getting more and more Logitech logos and
less Harmony every packaging change... so there is somewhat of a
foothold for them there.

Hard to say: people are so fickle with toys sometimes

2007-02-23 Thread autopilot

If people dont care about branding or looks, fine. If people do, that
fine also.

Gone are the days where people bought stuff solely on how well they
perform their given task. Look at the Moto RAZR, dog of a phone to use,
terrible battery life, poor reception and shocking UI. But it was they
best selling phone of the year because people wanted to be seen with a
phone that looks like that. As we say here in the UK "there's nout
stranger than folk". People forget that these are not microwaves, they
are lifestyle products that sitting in pride of place in there living
room next. Call people snobs, but thats the way it is. If companies
dont take that seriously, they will suffer.

Personally though, i think there are more pressing things to worry
about. Such as if people think that in 2 years or so the Logitech
Squeezebox 5 still runs on open source software, they are in for a
shock. It not in Logitechs ethos, no mater what the marketing boys
around here will say at the moment. Partly because What i think will
happen long term is that Logitech will sell loads of units, but as it
becomes more mainstream they will dumb thing down a little and the
hardcore enthusiasts will drift. But the world will keep spinning.

that a lot will have to do not with black or white, but with degrees of
grey.

Not whether, but to what degree...Could very well be that Logitech will
leverage part of the image of Slimdevices for its own return, that is as
a further example that Logitech is "going upstream" and introducing very
high level products.

The issue is that Slimdevices matters to those who use it, but is per
se not a very known brand, and thus quite easy to shape into something
different.

I hope we will witness a slow absorbtion a la Harmony.
