Re: [slim] While I wait to get my SB3 - External Hard Drives

2007-04-05 Thread bukharin

I'm thinking of writing a small plugin to eliminate this delay.

The idea would be that every time the server expects you're about to
play something (eg when the SB/Tp is turned on, or when "browse" is
pressed), it reads a small file from the hard disk in order to wake it
up.

I'm not sure how this would work with caching filesystems; writing a
file would work better, but would depend on write access to the
filesystem, which can't be assumed.

Do you guys think that would be useful? Or is the delay really not
bothersome?

I'm using a pair of the USB versions of the WD MyBook 500GB drives and
they work perfectly with my PC. As BigTony points out, it sometimes
takes a few seconds to wake them up, but I think the fact that they
power down when not in use is a good thing.

Re: [slim] While I wait to get my SB3 - External Hard Drives

2007-04-05 Thread Deaf Cat

Hi

When my 500gb Lacie external did work, SS had no problems in locating
and playing from it.

BUT, within the first two years, it broke and was replaced once, broke
again twice and was hence repaired twice, and had 3 new psu's as these
were apparantly pretty weak, you can guess how much fun I had in
playing music, and re-ripping :-(

Learnt my back up lesson and what not to buy. Now have an internal
that is backed up by external, NEITHER are Lacie :-)

I use two of the same drives and they have worked faultlessly. I also
run a couple of the same drives but smaller as back up for my PC and
mp3’s and again they have both run trouble free for some years.

I'm using a WD MyBook 500GB drive connected via Firewire to my PC. It
works perfectly - but when its powered down it can take 10-15 seconds
to wake up properly and start streaming.

Cheers

For a while, I used a Seagate 300Gb USB2 drive. There weren't any
functional problems with it - Slimserver didn't have a problems with
visibility etc. What I did notice, was that if the drive hadn't been
accessed for a while (& had presumably spun down), there was a
noticeable delay in loading & playing the first track - 5 to 10 seconds
or so. You could also see this delay just by browsing to the disk in
Explorer - so it wasn't Slimserver. I don't know how they are sold now
- but there was no utility to control spin-down or wake-up times.

Some people have had problems with SlimServer not being able to find
music on external USB drives, but (as far as I know) it's always been a
permissions problem when running on a unixy-type box. It's certainly
fixable...

I have noticed my SB2 and SB3 occasionally say "Waking up SlimServer"
when they're powered on... but I've never needed to rely on it. (My
SlimServer box is an always-on, low-power Kurobox)

See also _'this_recent_thread'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32674)_ for a
discussion about waking up a sleeping server... I guess your server
box's ethernet card would need to support _'WOL'

Congratulations on the new purchase - welcome to the club! :-)
