Re: [slim] RadioTIme CLI

2009-03-23 Thread andyg

To browse radio or services, you should first get the list of
radio/services by calling:

playerid radios 0 100
playerid music_services 0 100

Those will have the commands you need to call.

It is possible to do metadata in WMA, but you need an encoder program

The squeezecenter+perl-armv5te-poky-linux-gnueabi file will run on the
Sheevaplug. This is a stripped-down version of SC though, and does not
include the web UI, some transcoders, etc. We are working on fixing
that.

This also includes our optimized build of Perl 5.10, you will need to
run SC using that version of Perl, not any other version of Perl already
installed.

Yeah this is really interesting to me too, but we just don't have time

Re: [slim] Czech Radio upstages BBC

2009-08-06 Thread andyg

I bet almost everyone would not be able to ABX a 224k Vorbis stream
against FLAC. And you can play Vorbis natively. :) Still, it's cool
they are experimenting with FLAC, but as the previous poster said, I
wonder how much that's costing them.

Re: [slim] Finally a proper and search with SB Classic.

2009-08-12 Thread andyg

Audio scrubbing was a poorly implemented idea and I'm glad it's long
gone. Anyone who wants to try and implement audio-based scrubbing will
soon realize why it was removed: it's an absolute nightmare to get right
for all file formats, possibly with transcoding involved, and the stream
possibly from a remote source. Even the simple seeking we have now is
complicated to get right.

Re: [slim] The missing features which annoy me every day

2009-09-10 Thread andyg

Hi, comments below.

 1) I wish the soft knob on the transporter would allow me to set it to
default to volume control. I've used it without a preamp, and it is
annoying to have to find and press the volume button.

This should be possible with a plugin. But, if you enabled this mode,
how would you navigate with the knob, or switch to navigation mode?

 2) Deduplication AT THE PRESENTATION LAYER of tracks. If two songs have
the same metadata, dont show me both of them. If I select an album, and
i happen to have two copies of it, don't add every track to the playlist
twice. If two copies exist, only show the one encoded with a higher
 bitrate.

Well, you can also argue that you should clean up your library. :)
Detecting the same metadata is not as easy as you might think, and the
work required for this would probably not benefit very many people. I
think there are some apps that can scan your full library for duplicates
and clean it up automatically.

 3) Fix the itunes plugin so that i can have it ONLY IMPORT PLAYLISTS,
and refresh them often, and not my entire library. I use itunes to build
playlists because playlist management on the slimserver interface is so
poor. I also use itunes to build playlists because i like genius. I want
my itunes playlists to show up in playlists, but not everything else.
This seems like it should be so easy!

File an enhancement for this, not a bad idea.

 3) Real itunes integration so i can use genius playlist generation in
real time from the SC interface. I don't care if its a scripted backend
sending keystrokes to the application, only care about the results.
genius is much beter with the size of collection and type of music i
collect than is musicip, and musicip is effectively dead as an
organization. yes, musicip is dead. nobody maintains the musicmagic
plugin anymore. the developer at musicip who wrote everything hasnt
 worked there in a year.

Would be cool. I don't know if Genius is exposed via the various
iTunes APIs or not. iTunes uses completely different APIs on Mac and
Windows so anything like this basically has to be written twice.

 4) A UPNP client that works. Sometimes I have music in other places
than slimserver. Sometimes friends come over with music. It sure would
be nice to allow them to access their music through the squeezebox.

Heh yes, one of my always-postponed items, I don't expect we'll have
any time to improve UPnP until someone in Marketing decides it's a
priority. Windows 7 has good UPnP integration so that's one good reason
to do it. However, we are totally swamped with Radio and Touch
development and just don't have any bandwidth for this. It's still on
the radar though.

 5) I'm dreaming here, but an airtunes target. A plugin which allowed me
to use the digital output from an airport express and re-encodes it on
the server would be fine too... so when people ask how can i play some
music from my laptop i can tell them to just find the slimserver
airport express, select the transcoded input on any of the players, and
 hear what they are playing.

I've never looked at Airtunes but I would guess this is impossible.
Apple almost certainly has locked this down so third parties can't
interface with Airports. Are there any open source projects that have
figured out how to do this?

Yeah I do see that, so I guess it's possible. But that's not the sort
of thing we'd develop in-house, it would be competition to our own
players (and via a far inferior device). No reason it couldn't be a
plugin though.

Re: [slim] RTSP, why not ?

2009-09-12 Thread andyg

RTSP would be useful for some WMA stations that stream using
MMS-over-RTSP. But all it takes for these stations to stream using the
HTTP method we do support is checking a single checkbox in the WM Server
admin tool. So it hasn't been a priority for us to support. RTSP is
also used for RealAudio, but it's not going to be around much longer and
we have no plans to support it.

Note that you can install the AlienBBC plugin with mplayer if you need
to play some of these streams.

Re: [slim] OS X 10.6 SB3: Use Wake on Wireless LAN feature?

2009-09-26 Thread andyg

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3774

When Wake on Demand is enabled, any Mac on your network running Snow
Leopard will automatically register itself and its shared items with the
Bonjour Sleep Proxy. When a request is made to access *a shared item* on
a Mac running Snow Leopard, the Bonjour Sleep Proxy asks that Mac to
wake and handle the request. Once that request is complete, the Mac will
go back to sleep at its regularly-scheduled interval as set in the
Computer Sleep section of the Energy Saver preferences pane.

So I think in order to become a 'shared item' you have to register with
Bonjour. We actually removed our Bonjour registration code recently
because it wasn't useful. But maybe someone could look and see if there
is an easier way to do this.

Re: [slim] OS X 10.6 SB3: Use Wake on Wireless LAN feature?

2009-09-26 Thread andyg

Sure, but this is wireless. You can't use normal WOL because the
wireless interface on the Mac is asleep. This sort of swaps it around
so you notify the access point you want it to wake up and then the Mac
checks in periodically and the AP tells it to wake up. See that link
for more info.

Re: [slim] Replaygain: Strange mp3 tag behaviour

2009-10-12 Thread andyg

If you still have a file that gives you the wrong value, please file a
bug and attach the file.

There is one case where gain values can be added together, and that is
if you have iTunes SoundCheck data and an RVAD or RVA2 tag.

The basics are that if you have a REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN tag (in either
ID3v2 or APE) it will be used as-is. If not, we look for RVAD or RVA2
and take that value. Then we look for iTunes SoundCheck data in a
comment tag, if found this is added to the value from RVAD/RVA2 if any
(we do this because that's what iTunes does). LAME tag data is not
used.

So for best results, you simply need to run your files through Foobar
or another app that writes a set of 4 REPLAYGAIN gain and peak tags.

I saw some mention of SQLite so I wanted to clear up some confusion.
SQLite has no tunable parameters like this. It is faster during
scanning (no IPC traffic to MySQL) but not as fast during complex browse
queries where MySQL is more advanced.

The current plan is to include full support for both MySQL and SQLite,
with MySQL the default on non-embedded platforms. There will be a pref
to switch database backends if you want.

All the sound effects/nature sounds fit completely into the player's
buffer. After it downloads it once there is no additional network
traffic for the audio. You should not have any problem like that.

Replace 127.0.0.1 with the IP of your computer, and see if it works
then.

Re: [slim] Octoshape streaming

2009-12-01 Thread andyg

When you say it plays with Winamp, did you have to install an Octoshape
plugin for Winamp or are you playing it with a bare install of Winamp?
Try playing it from Winamp on another PC using the same URL.

Enable scan.scanner and player.streaming.direct debug logging to get
more details on why it's failing.

I have no idea why you would have any problems with the sounds. They
should play in a loop basically forever as long as you have power. :)

My first guess is the Octoshape server/proxy/thing on that computer is
only listening on localhost for local connections.

Thanks for the screenshots. That's definitely not right, something must
be adding those vertical pipe characters somehow. Would you mind filing
a bug?

Re: [slim] Spotify on Squeezebox now possible?

2009-12-08 Thread andyg

Despotify is a hack around their DRM right? There is no way we could
use that unless we wanted to get sued. Also, we need to implement it in
our player firmware, which isn't x86, so we need a real API from
Spotify. But don't worry, I'm sure the Spotify team will get something
like this finished eventually.

Re: [slim] Spotify on Squeezebox now possible?

2009-12-08 Thread andyg

Right, Spotify uses Vorbis wrapped in DRM. The DRM decryption must be
kept secret and so lives in the firmware. The rest of the service is
implemented within the server and on the backend in MySB.com.

RP broke the art a few months ago by accident, so it may have happened

Re: [slim] Lossless WMA strange behaivour

2009-12-14 Thread andyg

Using cue files requires seek support for the file format, and while WMA
seeking is supported this is only for native playback. Seeking is not
supported while transcoding, which is required for lossless.

I highly recommend converting your files to FLAC instead, where
everything will work properly.

Re: [slim] M3u Playlist previous/next not updating song title/author?

Remote streaming an m3u with multiple files like this works, but not
very well. The code is designed around radio streams, not playlists of
many files. Feel free to file a bug.
