Hi

OOo should remain OOo
the non-community-edition was staroffice

All should be OOo.

Following a split to OOo community edition / OOo (with closed parts as

Re: [discuss] OOo Word processor compare

2007-10-12 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi Michael

I'm working as an architect for Airbus Information System service and I'm about
to launch, in the incoming weeks, a study aiming at creating a service
providing compare between tons of MS-Word documents.

Presently, two solutions are envisaged: OOo through UNO API and MS-Word through
.NET. My concern is about qa issue 16398
(http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16398) which is currently not
targeted to any OOo release. After a short evaluation, OOo would meet all my
business requirements except regarding this issue (while MS-Word 2003 is OK
with table compare...).

Considering this, I'll have to withdraw OOo from my options at the beginning of
the study if this issue has no target release and date.

The issue will be taken into account as answered on Writer dev. mailing
list. It may be filled soon

Hi Sophie

Obviously, there is a +1

Btw, i've a question regarding interaction with "extensions" incubator
approach.

Do you see it as complementary or something different
The goal is to collect extensions, make them translated and provide them
to end users (Yes i'm late setting up it, but alone an not so much time
since the web site is available)

So i can see your proposal as complementary, preparing the value to be
sent to users as extensions ?

an opinion ?

An other question is the licensing guidelines you may accept
But it is perharps a bit early to discuss this

Re: [discuss] Incubator for vba macros

2005-12-10 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi Noel

Thanks for your proposal and your presentation

I'm aware that VBA macros are a problem on a migration and something has
to be done. So you're proposal is welcomed

Nevertheless, I'm afraid that using VBA paradigm inside OOo will more
hurt than solve the problem. VBA has 2 parts : the language and the objects
I'm not talking about the syntax here. Some compatibility efforts have
been done in this directon and can be improved.

The problem, imho, is on the API level
Giving VBA support as you propose is implementing a new API for objects.
You will then have two ways for defining objects : the OOo API one, The
MS VBA one. It will be more difficult to understand things as these two
objects, will have difference : a VBA cell is different tha an OOo one.

How does this interact ? Is a VBA macro allowed to mix both API ? Is
python script allowed to use VBA objects and OOo objects ?
Are VBA macros only restricted to MS File format (i see no technical
reasons for this)

For me, at the end, it will be the end of any scripting language except
VBA one. Forget OOoBasic, python, Beanshell or javascript. VBA is widely
spread due to MS file format domination. Many people do know how to
create VBA macros and then it will end with a big proportion of this
language. A lot of documentation exists and we will be asked more and
more to implement VBA subtilities

But, VBA is not free ! OOo Project has no influence on its specification
and it can be changed without any warning (look at the difference
between MsOffice versions)

Moreover, what about legal issues ? Are we sure there are any patent on
this ? Are we allowed to implement an interpreter ?

Noel, I'm really enthousiastic by you project in a technical point of view.

But, i have to say -1 for the resons i gave, unless we build some
policies like (only proposal, ideas not worked)

- restrict vba to ms office file format (not opendocument or addons)
- translate the VBA source code to OOo API to only have to deal with one
model

So -1 for me
But totally open to discussion

Regards

Re: [discuss] opening MS Excel documents with VB script is broken...

2005-11-29 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi Hristo

This is not an answer.

the answer basically is that objects underlying the two office suites
are differents

VBA does it a way, UNO another and there is no one to one correspondancy

Only calling remotly OOo from VBA does work

Many people use VB scripts in Excel documents and if we want to win them for
OOo we have to find some solution for this.

This is the goal of the "extensions" project that is under construction
See my presentation at the OOoCon for details

Newcommers will have to be welcomed and helped, content will need to bet
ranslated aso

I'll probably call for a wide help when the incubator is up

Thanks

[discuss] OOo Foundation : Building the future ?

2005-11-09 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi all

First please forgive me for this late announcement and putting this to
your attention :(
As CCR, i relay a discussion that occured in the community council,
thanks to Louis

http://council.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=675
and the discussion that occured then
http://council.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=discuss&by=thread&from=1117047

The discussion has been then relayed on native-lang projects
http://native-lang.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=5930
http://native-lang.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=dev&by=thread&from=1117896

please note the good summary of the council discussion from Bernhard Dippold
http://native-lang.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=5945

I now some discussion occuring in french, japanese and german team. You
may be already involved in them. Feel free to update there in english

Btw, for the general users, here is the relay on an english list

The purpose of it is to start thinking on ways to make OOo independant
and provide background for variuous corporate developpers, fundings ...

Loocking at OpenDocument growth, the question is : is OOo the same as
OpenDocument ? It has been agreed is discussions that it is not. Yes OOo
is the premium integrator of OpenDocument but it is an office suite,
which means more than a document format regarding user experience for
example

So here raises the question :
How can we build something that provides a neutral place that allow
funders but also major contributors (yes, and smaller ones too) that are
usually competitors to come and work together on their common goal : OOo

We are now in a unique situation that let us create the future of an
independant OOo. We need to do it with a large vision as it will be
difficult, once setup, to change even if things can be built step by step.

Every idea, suggestion is welcommed. Btw, please remain positive and
constructive as we all have so few time to spend

Thanks to all

[discuss] new incubator : Call for Name

2005-10-26 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi all

Following the OOoCon, i will setup the new incubtaor project i proposed
on my presentation
http://marketing.openoffice.org/ooocon2005/presentations/friday_c8.sxi

to sumarize, the purpose is not to compete with api project but to help
it, puting a bridge from new addons developpers to it.

The new incubator project will adresse these points

- help new commers to deal with first steps in addon production
Help in their naive-lang may be nedded
- build generic tools implementing best-pratices for each scripting
languages so that a maximum number of addons share the same developping
guidelines and same look and feel
- provides a browsable repository
- provides a tool for users to install in 'one-click' an addon from a list

see the presentation for more details

The long term goal is to bring OOo usefull features through addon (in
whatever language supported) and integrate it in OOo if popular

You are all welcommed on board. There is a lot of work to do and not
especially hard coding but also translation and new commer welcoming
Obviously, some volunteers dealing with basic, python, java, c++ are
welcommed to help building the tools (i say, a generic wizard,
translation mechanism compatible with OOo translation tools ...)

For now, it appears that this incubator needs a new name as it is more
than scripting and we need something that identifies all the concerned
levels (dev, repository, end-users)

Here are the propositions

- addon.openoffice.org (already 1 vote)
- extensions.openoffice.org (already 3 votes)
- scripting.openoffice.org (already 0 vote) -i leave it in case

We are actually discussing on the dev@scripting.openoffice.org mailing
list. Feel free to join the discussion there
I plan to close this discussion on friday and move to the new
.openoffice.org list when up

[Update]: it as been reported that extensions and scripting are used in
cvs modules and may disturb developpers. Btw, there will be no CVS for
this incubator. Feel free to propose anything you would think better,
conforming to the ideas exposed in the OOoCon presentation

Thanks again and join us

Re: [discuss] Lingua Latina

2005-06-21 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi richard

No. You can set it as any language that you are not using.

It should also work, now, with ANY which obviates the need to
assign it to another lang. Just found out about this the other
day. I'll have to look it up. Maybe someone has it at hand.

looking at the available.lst file that DicOOo uses, la.zip is still
bound to it IT

using ANY, as i did for esperanto, works only if the language is listed
in the dropdown of the UI (ie, the Local la ANY is allowed)

reading again the file i think i messed some things
ia,ANY,ia_ANY,Interlingua (ANY locale),ia_ANY.zip --> ok
it,IT,la,Latin (for x-register),la.zip --> latin bound to it (is it
still used ?)

http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/spell_dic.html
or directly:
http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/la.zip

Yes, you're right

the only more to say is that the language is bound to italian, so you
have to select this language as the character propertyof your text
Latin spellchecker is also available through DicOOo (File > autopilot >
install dictionnaries)

read the readme.txt file to see how to change this association

Re: [discuss] OO.o Macros with Python interpreter?

2005-06-07 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi,

Ok this is a learning opportunity, I thought odt is exactly the same as
sxw just
a with a different syntaxis. If I have a macro with a window form and I
save
that document. Does that mean that the code will be in the file or would
it be

on my computer? Does that means that they are no-longer portable to another
OOo?

if written as a starbasic macro, it will remain in the file

Nevertheless, OpenDocument Oasis standard do not deal with macros
so IMHO .odt files handles more information (embedded images, macros
...) than the OpenDocument standard states.

OpenDocument for me is /only/ the xml description of an office document
but i may be false ...

Re: [discuss] OO.o Macros with Python interpreter?

2005-06-07 Thread Laurent Godard

Hi Marco,

Fair question, but you partly answered it yourself. OpenDocument
is one thing, OO.o another. Who can assume that the latter *will*
be installed wherever the former is used? Especially in 2/4 years,
if OpenDocument is to become the truly universal that we keep
saying etc etc...

IMHO, macros (developepd in StarBasic, python, beanshell,
whateverlanguage) do not deal with openDocument at all
It only deals with the layer the software (OOo) that render an
OpenDocument gives the script through its API. It is implementation specific

OpenDocment is /only/ the description of the xml files (eg content.xml),
and not a specification of the api of the implementation

Re: [discuss] updating OO and dicts

2005-05-20 Thread Laurent Godard
Hi
As you've seen from my last message I just updated OO again to 104. One
recurring problem is carrying along the various dictionaries I use for
spell checking. I run the macro DicOOo.sxw and it installs the
dictionaries to ~/openoffice.org1.9.104/user/wordbook . When I run
openoffice as a normal user (which I always do), it ignores anything in
that folder. It's only when I manually copy the .dic & .aff files to
/opt/openoffice.org1.9.104/share/dict/ooo that openoffice notices them
and I can use them. Anyway to get OO to pay attention to what's in the
homedirectory or to place them in the /opt.../share directory?
thansk for the report
i just tested
it appears that the new dictionnary is detected but not setup in the
configuration;
As stated in the DicOOo File, you just have to go to
tools > options > linguistic > linguistic C first edit buton (sorry
don't have english version)

it works for me

Re: [discuss] On the acceptance of an OO.o extension installer

2005-04-27 Thread Laurent Godard
Hi,
Nobody (not me anyway) asked to use _one_ form of package. What is
important is make sure that everything is always made available online
in "source" form, that the distributors can pick and package their way
for automatic installation and upgrade. *Without* extra work like
dissecting a self-installing .sxw file to get the macro it wants to
install by itself.
Do you know what an UNO package is ?
Do you know the difference between user and share OOo subdirectories ?
IMHO, the actual package designs + the GUI possibilbilty of deploying
fullfills all the needs

And as it has already been said (mathias ?) if it is a corporate policy
not to install extra addons, let admins do their job and remove the menu
entry. The massive deployement of UNO packages is not an issue.

Re: [discuss] Re: Patch acceptance

2005-04-24 Thread Laurent Godard
Hi
I like that idea. A working prototype can styll be of value. And if
we're lucky, after the add-on is mature, maybe /then/ the author will
decide that the JCA is not such a bad idea.

I mean, if I have a working add-on, it works well, people love it, and I
have the promise that it will go into the OOo tree... I would be much
more willing to sign the JCA to see it happen.
That is exactly how DicOOo has come into OOo
First it was a standalone macro, lost of my personal website
Then it has been reworked (and is still be worked on) and be integrated
It is the normal way for me
On the other hand, i want to point that addons are standalone entities
They have their on life cycle and are desiminated all over the web
Why requesting the JCA for pluggin on OOo ?
If i understand correctly, the JCA becomes mandatory when
1- integrated into the main OOo package
2- uploaded on the OOo server
Point 1 is technically ok
Point 2 should be avoided
Addon can yes be prototypes but also they are dedicated to handle full
features. No need of C++ core rewriting
Thanks to UNO, these foreign extensions can be writtent in C++, java,
python, OOoBasic
A lot of languages allowing to attract developpers

Once an addon is widely used and adopted, then rises the question if it
is valuable to integrate it.

But if we have a mechanism that allow to install certified packages
after install, the integration directly into OOo by default becomes less
important

Hi joerg
For the web install, see Mathias' answer. If we support that and make it
easy for anyone to upload their macros to an 'official' repository the
security risk is really high.
I agree (hum almost as i strongly would like a repository :) ), there
should be an audit of every macro/addon that is submitted by a kind of
comittee

But in fact, regarding security, what is the difference with an addon
the user would download elsewhere ?

The key is perharps "signing" ?
Some kind of levels on this repository
- unverified (use it at your own risk) <-- entry point
- testing
- certified

Re: [discuss] Patch acceptance

2005-04-21 Thread Laurent Godard
Hi all
Thanks for this dicussion that feeds me for the IRC conf.
(huuuh, am i late ?!!! - one week left ;))
In my experience, (1) coding the extension was easy, but (2) the
documentatin was inpenetrable and (3) I couldn't figure out how to
deploy them. There just wasn't a simple system for that.

(2) and (3) are a problem
but it is sometine a matter finding the right person that has the
answer. When i started, i didn't even know there were a [EMAIL PROTECTED] ML
After, i couldn't trust people were so kind to help me, poor scripter

I have high hopes that Ian Laurenson and Laurent will aleviate this. Ian
is working on a wiki to help people learn the API, and both have talked
about ways to simplify deployment.

Some tools already exists. Xray (and pyXray) should be included in OOo
by default. Same for addon manager
Bernard Marcelly (Xray and addon manager author) did a great job there

But in any event, based on my experience, documentation and deployment
are the biggest obstacles. It'd be wonderful if, for example, OOo had a
dialog for extensions, like Thunderbird. It could download the
extensions from some central server, like OOoMacros.

This is the way
and not so hard to implement as it is the basis of DicOOo and FontOOo
Templates would have helped me inmsensely. Could you donate those
templates to Ian's Wiki? That would be a good step forward.

I wanted to propose a pre-build wizard
with all the navigation already coded, the translation engine (that is
very important to address international community)
beginners (and why not, other) could use it to focus on the purpose of
there addon.
And it should uniformize the look

What are the chances of a near-future OOo version having an extension
installer, like Thunderbird?

well, the time to code it
could be a macro
but an extension installer, needs a repository with all the management
tools : updated lists, classification by features, certification aso
quite a project (an incubator already exists ?) with real people inside

Regarding license, as these addons are separated tools, they can be
under whatever free licence the author wants. Some policies to build though

Enhancing OOo can be done by people who don't even know what cvs is
if the addon they developp becomes so popular that it has to be
integrated in OOo, well, it can be done by more advanced coders and they
can be driven (as i'm actually)

Thank's all for this discussion

It is a good way to understand OOo mechanism/API

Learning it is quite long
Can't we help and be counted as developpers if we don't code in heavy C++

You shuld contatc the DScience project in the french community
I think it's Agnes party

Re: [discuss] Winner, OpenOffice.org 2.0 Splashscreen Competition

2005-02-25 Thread Laurent Godard
Hi Louis,
Thousands of OpenOffice.org community members participated in the voting
for the OpenOffice.org 2.0 splashscreen. People could vote for their
favourite three choices from the eleven splashscreens shortlisted form
over 340 submissions from 103 artists and designers.
We are pleased to announce that Brendan Wheelan was the outright winner
with his splashscreen design:
http://www.openoffice.org/editorial/bwhelan.html
Thanks a lot for the result
And all my consideration to all designers, artists
Just a question. How many votes were expressed - Thousands : 2,5,10,20 ?
I don't care in any order (who is second, with xx votes diff)
but just wan't to know how popular the vote was
Thanks again
laurent

Re: [discuss] Medical Dictionnary

2005-02-06 Thread Laurent Godard
Hi Lincal
I'm a medecine student in France, and I'm using OO since almost one
yar... and quite a lot of words I'm using have a red underline
(mitochondries, hepatocytes, désamination, dephosphorylations... )...

So I'd like to know if there's any project of proffessionnals dictionnarys.
AFAIK nobody did this for french
Nevertheless i remember nederland project provide this
it is possible possible though
I need to check deeply but
an alphabetical sorted list (one line per word) with the number of line
as 1st line could be ok
no need of affix file for a first try
name the file medical_fr_FR.dic
then add the entry in dictionary.lst
fr FR medical_fr_FR

Feel free to contact me if any help needed
When ready, i'll be happy to include it in the DicOOo list
