Re: [SH-Discuss] PROPOSAL TIME! We have A TON of laptops and desktops, wat do?
Feedback from last meeting resulted in these changes/additions listed in *BOLD. *This will be voted on tomorrow. ALL MACHINES WILL BE SOLD WITHOUT HARD DRIVE AND RAM BUT MUST PASS A POST TEST USING KNOWN GOOD RAM, ALL SALES FINAL: - DDR1 Desktops @ $20 - DDR1 Laptops @ $40 - DDR2 Desktops @ $40 - DDR2 Laptops @ $60 - DDR3 Desktops @ $60 - DDR3 Laptops @ $80 This is an easy matrix to follow, there is no refurbishing involved, no need to go elbow deep into pricing by individual model/specifications. Just make sure it turns on, screen is not cracked, and then put it up. Once a set of computers are identified as redundant/excess, the sale procedure would be as follows: 1. A announcement is made on the announce list listing the models up for grabs, by serial number and the pricing matrix is listing. The items will be available for 2 weeks. 2. A person that wants one *MUST respond to the announcement *claiming the serial number they want to get. *FIRST COME FIRST SERVED. Open to everyone at the same time.* 3. Members can veto an item's sale by claiming it for a project (I.E. A members wants to turn a laptop into a slideshow picture frame for the welcome bar). They have until the end of the sale period to coordinate a pickup time with a Synhak keyholder. *An item already claimed for sale CANNOT be vetoed. Only unclaimed computers may be vetoed.* 4. Anything not sold by the end of the time period goes up on Craigslist. Anything not sold on Craigslist gets donated/given away to anyone wanting it. 5. Money goes directly to Synhak Inc as a Quid Pro Quo donation.http://www.irs.gov/Charities--Non-Profits/Charitable-Organizations/Charitable-Contributions-Quid-Pro-Quo-Contributions There is no disclosure statement necessary (See section ii under no disclosure necessary if...) but a receipt of purchase will be issued proving transfer of ownership. ALSO, keep in mind that Justin has expressly stated that his donations to Synhak are to benefit Synhak, as such they are the property of Synhak Inc. NO ONE may pick one up to take home as personal property, and a member sale veto must have the purpose of benefiting the space in some way. However, lets first remember that Synhak is NOT a place for e-waste storage/disposal, lets not encourage hoarding of computer assets at Synhak please. Also, I know its long, but please read my entire post before responding. Of the laptops and desktops we have, I'll sort out first which ones Synhak will use as public workstations for the infrastructure, after that, I'll identify a small set of laptops/desktops to donate to CanHax to help them with their infrastructure, then the rest will be sorted and priced by RAM type. I have a few outlines I had Beth put together when we were finalizing the IRS stuff in the fall but my understanding was she had all the curriculum she had been working on and that there had been a few meetings to further develop materials since then. If this is not the case or we are unable to get in touch with Beth I think that baring joining up with apl or the schools it will be very hard to put everything together and advertise by the summer. Re: [SH-Discuss] Little Archimedes/Aristotles
I think it would benefit us to talk to some people with experience with summer youth programs (Suzie graham who use to run Lock 3 summer arts experience , Wendy Duke of miller south and a few others I have in mind) . Take the remainder of the year to make contacts , get comfortable in our new space, perhaps find funding set up open DNS incase the kids are on the computers , make detailed plans for the program and launch it next year. This would give us chances to come up with lesson plans and test them out on a group of volunteer kids ( children, friends and family members of synhakers) so we can see the lessons carried out like a tech rehearsal for a play . Perhaps come up with a survey to distribute to a few schools to be sent home with kids asking key questions like: 1. When in the summer would be best for your family? 2. What time during the day? 3.would you as a parent want to chaperone the program? 4. Under proper supervision would you be comfortable with your child using tools such as drills, soldering irons, computers? Etc. etc. I requested lesson plans from Bethany on the previous thread and she did not respond. Re: [SH-Discuss] Little Archimedes/Aristotles
I like Becca's suggestion of consulting with others for advice. I'd say start simple. My version of simple - google for hackerspace curriculum or hackerspace workshop; analyze what's already out there; pick one format, stick with it for round1. I'm getting tired of 'Bethany has lesson plans' frankly. If she has something concrete, fine - that can be used if/when she shows up to share them But in her absence, we all can decide one simple format from an existing hackerspace or other organization that has experience with running workshops for younger students. Right about now, in my mind atleast, Torrie's SparkAK talk comes to mind - *Document, Document, Document* - to make sure that the organizing can continue by others. One example I found - Sparkfun has contributed curriculum - https://learn.sparkfun.com/resources In which someone from GirlScouts shared their Lilypad takehomekit as well as presentation: https://learn.sparkfun.com/resources/31 This is a very basic example. I'm sure there's plenty others out there. I only share this as I'm not sure if entities like JoAnn etc have kids workshops onsite at their facility, but a quick phone call to them and we can know one way or another. At Ingenuity last year 'make and take home' workshops were very well received. I'm sure they are planning them again this year. Our emphasis for the short term can be re-use existing resources, gain experience organizing the kids activities, tweak it to improve it for next time; potentially create new original programs for kids. Starting simple from the get go allows us to keep improving in subsequent programs we organize - note to future self -- kickass might be an understatement when describing a syn/hak event for kids.
