RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Editor Options for CF7 (Macromedia Studio 8? Homesite? Some other editor?)

2006-06-29 Thread Charlie Arehart

Well, again, I want to make the assertion that HomeSite+ is
also "free"--if you already have a license for DWMX or Studio MX, of course. I
know that may smack some as either disingenuous or a technicality, but I do mean
it seriously. I know a lot of folks who don't like DWMX much and still haven't
gotten into Eclipse, and are still using CF Studio even though their shop has
licenses for DWMX and perhaps even if it's installed on their machine and they
never use it. I'm just saying: go get that DWMX or Studio MX CD and you can
freely installed HS+. You just need the license key for your DWMX or Studio MX
install.

But I'm really not arguing against Allen or others who love
Eclipse. It clearly has some great advantages--and strong adherents. :-) Just
know what all your options are and choose what's best for you. That was the
point of Gordon's question, really.

seen is the absence of FTP.  But, other than that, it is a beautiful

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Editor Options for CF7 (Macromedia Studio 8? Homesite? Some other editor?)

2006-06-29 Thread Charlie Arehart

Be careful: HomeSite does NOT equal HomeSite+. HS can be
purchased, HS+ is bundled in DWMX/Studio MX. You're right, though, that there's
little mention of that. And again, beyond hiding it on the site, it's not even
in the installer. So many people have it and don't even know
it.

Thanks for the

Studio 8 software bundle.  The Adobe/MM store website seems to hide or at
least downplay that Homesite is included.

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Editor Options for CF7 (Macromedia Studio 8? Homesite? Some other editor?)

2006-06-29 Thread axunderwood
I'll do a brief overview:

Pros

- Free (that's a wonderful word)
- It basically does everything that studio does (color coding, help, bookmarks,
etc)
- It's extremely customizable - from snippets, shortcuts, layout, etc. Just a
very tweakable interface
- Constantly being updated by the developers of CFEclipse (and it's open source
so the support is tremendous)
- They finally have an RDS plugin that works very well
- You can add additional plugins such as CSS, Javascript, Database, etc. These
are updated frequently so you're constantly able to get the most updated code
libraries for color coding, auto completion, etc
- Much better integration with VSS using the source safe plugin

Cons

- Not all of the plugins work all that great (like the WebDAV/FTP
synchronization plugin - I can never get it to work)
- You can't just open a file in there, you have to open a random file in the
scribble pad which takes some getting used to (eclipse requires that you create
projects and you can edit files within your projects)
- Can't seem to get an FTP/WebDAV plugin to function properly

Overall, I would highly recommend to anyone looking to get away from DW (buggy)
or just looking to move up to a similar environment from Homesite/CFStudio. I
used to absolutely love Studio (and I still use it occasionally simply for the
included help files), but I would have to say that after having used CFEclipse
for over a year now, I think I like it better than the other ones currently out
there.

For the record, I like CFStudio, Homesite, and Eclipse (I'm fond of text-style
editors and not a big fan of drag and drop stuff) and I'm NOT fond of DW...

Allen,

Can you share with the group what functionality you like MOST about
Eclipse with the CF Eclipse plugin.

That is as opposed to the CF Studio or Homesite+ CF functionality.

As far as I know … yes …
Homesite version is almost identical from what I remember … I assume
Homesite+ may have a few new features over CF Studio ... can’t remember for
sure because it has been a few years since using CF Studio …

I still use homesite to build CF apps in
CF 7 or any version. If you are looking for the latest editors, I would think
you would probably want to use Dreamweaver 8 or Homesite+. Both come with
Studio 8. Dreamweaver would be better if you need a “design view”.
If you always work in code view, you might like homesite+ better. It feels a
lot like the old CF Studio so you would feel right at home.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] Editor Options for CF7 (Macromedia Studio 8? Homesite? Some other editor?)

2006-06-29 Thread Douglas Knudsen

I'm with Teddy for the most part, eclipse simply rawks. Its CVS and
SVN support built into your IDE are uber sweet and cfeclipse is really
coming along and even has RDS plugins now from Adobe. Only real draw
back is FTP support. I like how DW has easy upload via FTP on a per
file basis. I rarely use the 'design' view of DW, the code view is
just fine.

Now...add some other techs to the mix...use Eclipse for sure. Develop
your Flex mxml code, your CFcode, your Java code, your xml, your Ant
scripts, your ActionScript, etc... all in one IDE. nice.

Editor Options for CF7 (Macromedia Studio 8? Homesite? Some other editor?)

Not quite: CF Studio was indeed built from
HomeSite, virtually identical except that it added various CFML-specific
feature (and things like RDS support). Both product evolved together and could
be bought separately, with Studio always about 3-times more expensive. When MM
decided to create the Studio MX line, they had to do something
with CF Studio, both in name and in packaging. So they renamed it to
HomeSite+.

You can no longer purchase CF Studio, nor
can you purchase HS+ alone. It is indeed still being made and updated, but it's
just available only on the DWMX or Studio MX CDs. While you don't see it
as one of the options when you run the main installer, it can be found on
the CD as an executable. In that sense, CF Studio lives on in HS+, and
technically HS+ is now "free" (but only to those with a license
for DWMX or Studio MX).

HomeSite also still exists as its own
product, lacking the features that always distinguished CF Studio.

And to answer Gordon's original question,
the version of CFML support that HS+ would have depends on the version of
DWMX/Studio MX on whose CD you installed it from. If from DWMX or DWMX/2004, it
would have help, tag insight, and so on for the CF6 tags and functions. As of
DWMX 8, it would have CF7 support.

Note that you can also update your tag
help, insight, etc. with free updates from Adobe that will work on either HS,
CF Studio, or HS+. The CF7 updater is at: http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/downloads/ (look
in the middle of the page for HomeSite+). If I recall, it only adds what was
new, so if you are trying to add it to CF Studio or an old version of HomeSite
or HomeSite+ that didn't have the CFMX 6/6.1 tag updates, you may lack those.
If anyone recalls differently, or has a link for the CFMX 6/6.1 updaters for
HS/HS+, please do share.

As far as I know … yes …
Homesite version is almost identical from what I remember … I assume
Homesite+ may have a few new features over CF Studio ... can’t remember
for sure because it has been a few years since using CF Studio …

I still use homesite to build CF apps in
CF 7 or any version. If you are looking for the latest editors, I would think
you would probably want to use Dreamweaver 8 or Homesite+. Both come with
Studio 8. Dreamweaver would be better if you need a “design view”. If you
always work in code view, you might like homesite+ better. It feels a lot like
the old CF Studio so you would feel right at home.

We are migrating our CF 5 apps to CF 7.
I’ve been using Studio 5 for my

CF editor for the past few years.

What are our editor options with CF 7…and
what might you recommend based on your experience?

I would highly recommend Eclipse editor using the CFEclipse plugin.Eclipse is a java application and you will need a Java run time environment (JRE).   Eclipse is becomming a defactor editor because of Adobe's initiative Flex Builder.
