Call for Free Software at Bitsäume22
Hello everyone, the Bitsäume Conference is a conference on the subject of digital sustainability and it took place in 2018 for the first and only time so far. This year however there will be the next edition of Bitsäume and this time the FSFE is part of its organising committe. We are only one of many organisations, but our goal is of course to have many interesting topics around Free Software in connection with digital sustainability. You can find the call for participation here: https://bits-und-baeume.org/konferenz/en Registration deadline: June 7th The text of the call for participation is quite long, but you will see that this is true because there are actually many different ways to participate. Lectures and workshops can be submitted, but also art and science, conceptual gatherings or other creative forms of activity. "Start-Ups" also have the opportunity to present themselves to a jury in a "Pitch and Thrive". As you can see, the format is really very open to contributions and I would be very happy if we could see a lot of Free Software topics being covered on the different stages : ) And while I can't help you to get your submission through, I am happy to help if you have any questions or want feedback on whether your format might be of general interest or not. Feel free to ask me directly about it. And also feel free to distribute this mail further on any other list from that you think there are people who will be actually interested in it. Questions and ideas of general interest could be for example * Lectures on different dimensions of the sustainability of Free Software (technical, economical, social ...) * Your favorite Free Software that contributes to sustainability * A piece of hardware that you were able to give a new life to with the help of Free Software or extended usage time * Increased resource efficiency of your computer through free software * Organizational sustainability through the use of free software and Opener Standards * Sustainable knowledge management and and and Best regards, Erik -- No one shall ever be forced to use non-free software Erik Albers - Programme Manager Digital Sustainability Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) ___ Discussion mailing list Discussion@lists.fsfe.org https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/discussion This mailing list is covered by the FSFE's Code of Conduct. Upcycling Android
Hi all, today we launched our new initiative Upcycling Android to help users overcoming software obsolescence - with focus on the Android world. Software obsolescence occurs when a device's manufacturer discontinues support for the software required to operate the device. In this way, manufacturers put consumers into the dilemma of either buying new hardware or living with outdated software and potential security issues. This is exactly what is a big problem in the Android world. Installing a Free Software Operating System ("Custom ROM") can be a way out of the dilemma. You may know this, but many people don't. And for them we made the campaign. Along with the motivating realization that every time we continue to use our phone with Free Software, we support a more sustainable use of our resources. You find more information on https://www.upcyclingandroid.org If you like the campaign, please help to spread the word. In particular we would love to see this message reaching out of our "usual bubble" and into communities who traditionally are more concerned about the environment and/or the right to repair movement. Let them know that Free Software is good for everyone ; ) We also produced a nice video for the campaign, you can find it on: Peertube: https://media.fsfe.org/w/kGvs3JNADvvQfkC1dR9FGr Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eogGN7b-9k as well as attractive information and promotion material: https://fsfe.org/activities/upcyclingandroid/informationmaterial.html And this is just the beginning. In the coming months we will further elaborate the material and policy statements around Upcyling Android. And use it to influence the European legislation and directives to be negotiated next year regarding the eco-design of products and the related Sustainable Products Initiative. We're also hosting workshops bringing people together to help each other install Custom ROMs on specific phones. So if you like the campaign now, keep checking back to https://www.upcyclingandroid.org for the latest news and updates. "Open Source Gardens" and Free Software
Hi all, although it is not directly related to Free Software, it is very close and I thought the gardeners among you might be interested in a project some friends and me are running: The world wide seed market is heavily dominated by three chemical companies who control the market via artificial property rights and patents. Most of them are hybrid-varieties that are possible to reproduce further. This, to artificially limit the availability of seeds and put farmers around the globe in dependencies to said companies. Since some years now there is an "Open Source Seeds" movement growing up, whose breeders put their seeds under a copyleft license that protect their seeds and any future breeding from these seeds from being traded under artificial property rights and patents. To spread the word about it some friends and me created the "Open Source Gardens" to bring homegardeners in contact with concepts of Open Source Seeds and Free Software. Now we are running a campaign in that we send out seeds of different varieties. If you are a gardener, get a kit, join us or help spread the word: https://opensourcegardens.info/order-seeds.en.html#springflowers Best regards, Erik -- No one shall ever be forced to use non-free software Erik Albers | Programme Manager & Communication | FSFE OpenPGP Key-ID: 0x8639DC81 on keys.gnupg.net ___ Discussion mailing list Discussion@lists.fsfe.org https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/discussion This mailing list is covered by the FSFE's Code of Conduct. cfp about:freedom for this year's online CCC
Hi all, the Chaos Communication Congress has become an important event in the last years to spread FSFE's mission and message. Over the years, we have created our own cluster called about:freedom [1] with many other civil society organisations and organised our own lecture series. This year - surprise - the congress will take place online. Or, better said, online and physically decentralized: a global stream can be followed online, but there will also be satellite events in several major cities. Together with the Open Infrastructure Orbit, about:freedom will curate a "common" stage (without an audience!) in Berlin, Munich and Monheim. Speakers will be able to give their presentation live or pre-record it and just be online only for Q For the FSFE I would like to see many topics about Free Software and its big picture being submitted and selected. FSFE's Call for sessions "about:freedom" during 36C3
Hi all if it happens that you come to the Chaos Communication Congress this year you could be interested in the FSFE's call for participation: https://fsfe.org/news/2019/news-20191102-01.html also if you know someone who is going there who might have interest, please share the call. You find the text of the call within the link and hereafter in copy: # Call for sessions "about:freedom" during 36C3 In the context of the 36th Chaos Communication Congress happening from December 27th to 30th in Leipzig, the FSFE is happy to host an assembly again inside the cluster "about:freedom". We offer attention and a stage for self-organised sessions by and for our community and friends, and this is our call for participation. For our sessions at the FSFE assembly, we are looking for inspiring talks, hands-on workshops, community/developer/strategy meetings or any other public, informative or collaborative activities. Topics can be anything that is about or related to Free Software – from your private project to global community projects. While we welcome submissions on technical topics, we also further encourage non-technical talks that address philosophical, political, economical, and/or other aspects regarding Free Software, particularly for this year related to digital sustainability. As part of our cluster about:freedom, we also look forward to sessions about related subjects that have a clear connection to Free Software, in particular privacy, data protection, encryption, the commons and internet policies. For our friends, it is also possible to have informal meetings, announcements or other activities at our assembly. In this case, get in touch and we will see what we can do. If you are a musician and like to help forming our first Free-Software-song sing-along big band, please also get in touch. # Formalities If you are interested in hosting a session, please apply before ** Monday, November 18, 18:00 UTC ** by sending an email to e...@fsfe.org with the subject “Session at 36C3” and use the following template: Title: name of your session Description: description of your session Type: talk / discussion / meeting / workshop … Length: 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 min Tags: put useful tags here Link: (if there is a helpful link) Expected number of participants: 20 or less / up to 50 / up to 100 / beyond About yourself: some words about you/your biography Time limitations: exclude days or times you are not able to present You will be informed latest on Tuesday, November 26, if your session is accepted. # Good to know * Be aware that an acceptance in our call does not guarantee or offer you a ticket! Please check the CCC-announcements and proceed according to their requirements for the tickets. * If your session is accepted we will happily take care of its proper organisation, advertising and everything else that needs to be done. You are then welcome to simply come and host your session. * For your inspiration see our sessions during 35C3, 34C3, 33C3 and 32C3. recommendations for a mini laptop
Hi all, I am looking for a tiny laptop in a size of 9 or 10 inch that runs GNU/Linux and that I can easily take with me on my backpacking vacations. Battery power is a more important feature for me than computational power. I will basically use it for writing text and mails and browsing the web. Ok, if I can run GIMP that would be nice, but not necessary. If you know of a company that sells such a laptop with GNU/Linux pre-installed I would consider to support them. Wiki loves IloveFS-day : )
Hi all, I guess you all know that on February 14 there will be another I love Free Software day. Which goes perfect together with a current "photographic contest organized by Wikimedia community to document love testimonials in various cultures and regions of the world": https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Love_2019 Wikimedia Commons is the database of pictures that are used in the wikipedia. They regularly do contests to get pictures from monuments and other areas of Wikipedian interest. But in contrast to them this contest is not limited to "sites, whether of regional or national importance but on the widest variety of love testimonials possible. This means that most users will be able to find several pertaining subjects close to them, whether heritage sites or daily life event." Means that you can do a picture of your IloveFS-day contribution or of your group and upload it to wikimedia : ) The contest is running from February 1 to 28. FSFE publishes expert brochure about “Public Money? Public Code!"
Hi all, convincing decision-makers why more public code would benefit us all should be easy. There are so many good arguments for putting publicly funded code under a Free Software licence: Tax savings, transparency, and innovation – just to name a few. But, in practice, we experienced that there are still a lot of basics that need to be explained. Starting with: What is Free Software? To help with this and in preparation for the upcoming elections of the EU parliament, we compiled a policy brochure that presents the most important facts and arguments about publicly funded code. Today, we publish it [1] under a Creative Commons licence so that you and everyone else are free to use it as support for convincing candidates. Let us keep being friendly with each other (aka some words from your list-admins)
Dear all, Exchanging opinions and discussing them in public is very important for our community. Sometimes, discussions can become emotional and sometimes debaters use a too offensive language although, possibly unintentionally. In the last days we have seen some heated debates coming up on this list and individual messages of those discussions have already been brought to the attention of your list-admins. It also came to our attention that some of the more offensive messages were sent from mail accounts that joined this list just recently. The list administration would like to help bring back a good tone and discussion culture by moderating the discussion if necessary and for now we set new subscriptions to the list on moderation. But much more important for our discussion culture will be what you bring into it. A successful method that works for many people is, that if you are upset, then consider to keep your mail as a draft overnight and re-read it before sending it the next day. Also it might help to keep your audience in mind: This list has several hundred subscribers and is archived publicly on the Internet and indexed by search engines. Generally the best advice is to always keep in mind that: The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and its community aim to offer a friendly and peaceful environment for every participant at the FSFE's events, online and offline. All participants should at all times feel at ease to do so without fearing any form of attack, reprisal or harassment. We ask everybody to be respectful and considerate towards each other, especially when attempting to provide constructive criticism. This approach might work in a big organisation but not in a small one as we are. Let me give you the point of view of a staffer: We are currently 5 employees and the president. We sit in a tiny office in Berlin together (you have been here, you know how tiny it is), we split the work in departments, we keep an eye on people getting their free time but also always having someone available in the office, we plan long-time campaigns together, we spent weekends together working for Free Software, share trains, hotels etc. To let everything for us and for the FSFE run smoothly we need trust, flat hierarchies and good relationships. What staffers definitely not need is bullfighting alpha animals that just wait for something to happen and then to take over the leadership and tell the employees top-down what needs to be changed and be done in a different way. And Matthias currently has full support by the staffers. I am feeling sorry for you that you feel so bad since then but this seems to be a personal problem. 1) the motion you are referring to was changed after your first criticism and so is nothing to refer to. 2) it was one motion out of three to decide on. so why not telling the whole story and also cite the other two motions? 3) most important: the vast majority of the FSFE members voted for another motion. A motion to keep you in office for the whole 2 year-term! Everybody can read this in the offical minutes: "The current Fellowship representatives' membership ends as soon as the constitutional change is successfully registered, or 2 years after their election, whichever comes later." (https://fsfe.org/about/legal/minutes/minutes-2018-05-26.en.pdf, p. 9) this vote is the result of a weighing in the reasons that speak against keeping "the institution of a fellowship representative" and the benefits to keep you as a person inside the GA. It would > mostly help internal frictions, or attacks by anybody who wants to > paint himself as holier than us ("himself": women are usually more > intelligent than that). totally agree here. And as a staffer that is also hired for doing a good outreach I see two problems here: a) the work-time I need to invest to "[...] maintain a public inventory on the wiki listing the non-free software and services in use, including details of which people/teams are using them, the extent to which FSFE depends on them, a list of any perceived obstacles within FSFE for replacing/abolishing each of them, and for each of them a link to a community-maintained page or discussion with more details and alternatives." I am sorry, but I really think my work time is better invested in promoting FSFE and Free Software instead of overanalysing every single step or supervise my colleagues. b) the negative approach in the proposal aka "hall of shame". I second, it would mostly help internal frictions and give unnecessary arguments into the hands of our opponents ("look, even the FSFE is not able to operate without proprietary software" [link] or "the FSFE is a not reliable in their request to use Free Software because they do not do this themselves" etc). If at all, we should maintain a public inventory to list all the Free Software we are using to run our services, that we self-develop and what we achieve with them. In contrast to Daniel's proposal, this could help our own reputation and the reputation of Free Software. And it would show the FSFE to lead by example (what we actually do). However, I still fear this list will create internal frictions about the purity of some software. So, I propose you trust us that we use Free Software always and that this is minimum 95%, including our phones, landlines, printers etc. And then we concentrate on our work not our software in use. Best, Erik btw: I also cannot follow the argument in Daniel's blog post, that "tax deductions given to our supporters" means we are supported by public money. Please let me try to summarize a bit the discussion and finally give some new input. Although not every message had a clear statement in favor or against using proprietary software (platforms) to promote software freedom, I think I counted 8 persons in this thread in favor and 3 against. I think the most prominent arguments that argue back and forth are: The integrity of the FSFE is at stake the more we use non-free software even if we do it to promote Free Software VS in order to reach out to the people and to grow, we have to be where they are and reaching out to the people is part of our mission. and We shall better invest our time into real-world-activities or into (help) hacking free alternatives VS social media is helpful in outreach and sharing our message with "the world" And there have been brought up concerns about privacy as well as the wish for data and metrics. I like to make a point on metrics: yes, our activities should be based on data and metrics and fortunately every day we have more of it. But I like to bring up that numbers about the social or the media impact are always interpretable and kind of "soft-factors", no matter if we talk about online-activities or offline-activites. I make this point because I often hear that "it tells you nothing to see that you have [x number] of shares/dents/likes/toots etc" on a social media platform. Yes, that is true. Well, it is a number that you can see and compare but you have no idea about the real impact you made. This impact we can only assume. However, basically the same happens in "the real world": For example, I have all numbers of the promotion material we handed out at the last Chaos Communication Congress. I can see we handed out 1000 noCloud-stickers (all we had). That sounds a lot and a success. But do we know what people do with it? Maybe more than half of it threw it away? Or they put it into their bottom drawer where they forget about it for the next decades? Maybe not. But even if we assume that every single person of these 1000 stickers puts it on their laptop, do we know if this makes a difference? Do we have an idea if this brings just one more Fellow to the FSFE or if this convinces just one more person to get a Free Software-user? Me not and we all can only assume. And even if numbers are huge, the impact could be low. Then I see we handed out 44 Gnupg-Flyer in English. During 4 days, that sounds not a lot. But again, we simply do not know the impact. Maybe half of those people who picked them up now use GnuPG for their mail-encryption, get interested in Free Software and now or in some years will become important Free Software advocates? Again, about the impact we had with this, we can only assume. And even if numbers are low, the impact could be big. So why metrics at all? Fortunately, we can at least try to make some connections. For example when people sign up as a supporter of the FSFE and write into the referrer "booth at CCC", we do at least know that we did a good job in being there. Still, we do most probably not know what was it in particular that convinced this person? Same if we get a rise in page-visits after such an event. On first sight it seems that we did a great job in being there. But we do not know what is it in particular that drives more visitors on our page: the talk that we have given at the event, the PR material given out or maybe just the nice booth personnel? Or, who knows, maybe by chance at the same weekend there was a prominent person we are not aware of but who was giving a public performance and mentioning our name or handing out stickers and the rise of visitors is because of that and not because of our booth? I think you get the point. Metrics in the real world are pretty hard to interpret. However, like it or not, metrics in the digital sphere and on (proprietary) social media platforms seem easier to access and to make connections. For example when our president shares our new merchandise product and it got 500 shares and sold out in 24h. Or when someone did share our nocloud-sticker with a link to our order-page on reddit [1] and we got in 48h nearly as much orders as in the rest of

Unfortunately, it seems that there is some communication issue about the fellowship -> supporter change. We have been hearing couple of times in the past that "Fellowship" is a word that is hard to understand from the outside and people do not intuitively understand that a "Fellow" of FSFE is someone who is supporting the FSFE. Many people actually understood it the other way round, that a Fellow must be someone who is supported by the FSFE. This is mainly due to academic speech, where a "Fellow" uses to be someone who is financially supported by a research or educational institution to facilitate his studies. When we are now transforming our language from Fellow to Supporter, this is only a name change, not more. All future supporters will keep the benefits of a Fellow. In this sense, the name "Fellowship elections" this year seemed to be kind of anachronistic to this decision. But as the name of our community election is written into the constitution it will need a rewriting of our constitution to reflect this change. This, however, was not possible in time for the 2017 elections. Fellowship elections participation
Hi list, the Fellowship elections 2017 are over and the winner is Daniel Pocock. https://fsfe.org/news/2017/news-20170425-01 I like to thank all candidates for bringing life into this years election and every voter for rewarding our candidates' activities by participating in the elections. Unfortunately, we only had a participation of around 17 % which seems to be the lowest participation since we record participation (2014). Many of the list subscribers here have had the possibility to vote, so I like to ask for explanations and possibilities how we can raise participation? The low amount of participation leaves me in particular wondering as this year we had 7 candidates, each of them with a short representation in out wiki [1], public hustings [2] and a reminder three days before the end of elections. However, former elections with only one (!) candidate and without reminders and no public hustings (2016 and 2014) have had more participation ... Why is this? Please help us to understand what FSFE can do to make the electiosn more appealing or raise participation? Or help us to understand what was the reason that this year there was such a low amount of participation? Thank you very much, Erik [1] https://wiki.fsfe.org/Activities/Election/FellowshipElection_2017 [2] https://wiki.fsfe.org/Activities/Election/FellowshipElection_2017#Hustings -- No one shall ever be forced to use non-free software Erik Albers | Free Software Foundation Europe OpenPGP Key-ID: 0x8639DC81 on keys.gnupg.net ___ Discussion mailing list Discussion@lists.fsfe.org https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/discussion
Implementing a code of conduct?
Dear all, we (the local coordinators, country coordinators, team coordinators, the GA and the extended team including individual contributors) have been working on a Code of Conduct for FSFE events and communication. The wish came up by individual requests of people who felt attacked and by the fact that nowadays some sponsors (e.g. Mozilla) do not sponsor anymore events that do not have a clear Code of Conduct. We now feel that we have a final version at hand and would like to establish it soon: https://wiki.fsfe.org/HowTos/Public/CodeOfConduct On the German general discussion list however, there have been some voices raised against having a Code of Conduct at all. Without repeating arguments and without trying to influence you, I would like to ask about your opinion: Are you in favor or against having a general Code of Conduct? Are you in favor or against having this Code of Conduct? We are happy about simple yes/no answers but feel free to also elaborate your opinion. I forgot to add the text to simplify the information flow: = Call for sessions at the FSFE assembly during 33C3 = Every year, from December 27 to 30, there is the Chaos Communication Congress. And, as in recent years, FSFE is happy to host an assembly that includes an information booth, self-organised sessions and a meeting point for all friends of Free Software to come together, share or simply relax. This is our call for participation. We are happy to organise sessions in the name of our assembly and we will book proper rooms or offer our assembly itself. Sessions can be inspiring talks, hands-on workshops, community/developer/strategy meetings or any other public, informative or collaborative activity. Topics can be anything that is about or related to Free Software. We welcome technical sessions but we also encourage to give non-technical talks that address philosophical, economical or other aspects of/about Free Software. We also like sessions about related subjects that have a clear connection to Free Software for example privacy, data protection, sustainability and similar topics. Finally, we welcome all backgrounds – from your private project to global community projects. You have something different in mind? For our friends, it is also possible to have informal meetings or activities at our assembly. In this case, get in contact with me and we figure it out. == Formalities == If you are interested in hosting a session at the FSFE assembly, please apply no later than * Sunday, November 20, 18:00 UTC * by sending an email to me (eal at fsfe dot org) with the subject “Session at 33C3” and use the following template: Title: name of your session Description: description of your session Type: talk / discussion / meeting / workshop … Tags: put useful tags here Link: (if there is a helpful link) Expected number of participants: 20 or less / up to 40 / up to 100 About yourself: some words about you/your biography You will be informed latest on Wednesday, November 23, if your session is accepted. == Good to know == - If your session is accepted we happily take care of its proper organisation, publicity and everything else that needs to be done. You are then welcome to simply come and give/host your session : ) But this is neither a guarantee for a ticket nor do we take care of your ticket! Check this CCC-announcement [1] and get yourself a ticket in time. If you miss it, there is nothing we can do, even if we accepted your talk. - You do not need to be a Fellow of FSFE to host a session. - Please share this call with your friends or your favorite mailing list.
