Re: Django beginner

2021-07-05 Thread Andréas Kühne
Hi and welcome to the django community!

The best way to learn django depends a lot on you skill and experience of
python as well.

If you don't know that much python, I would recommend starting with a good
course or a book about fundamentals in Python. After that I would go to the
following resources:
1. Django girls tutorial: https://tutorial.djangogirls.org/
2. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079ZZLRRL/?tag=wsvincent-20

The second one there is a book - but William is really involved in hwo
django works and teaching django.

Regards,

Andréas

Re: django beginner

2020-08-05 Thread Kovy Jacob
If you want to learn, just try building a site, any site. Pick a hobby that
you have, and make a site about you and your hobby. There is a concept in
programming called MVP - minimum viable product. This means the minimum you
can do to have a working site.
I recommend that you figure out exactly how you want your website to be,
figure out the bare minimum for the site - no fancy HTMLs, no advanced
website functions - and build it. After that, slowly build on the existing
website.
Also, you should really make sure that you understand how the internet
works, how realtional databases (which is the type of database that
websites use (mostly)), and what a web framework (like django) is, and how
it works. You can learn django without it, but if you understand what you
are doing, it will help you A LOT. You won't just know what you are typing,
you'll understand why you're typing it.
Also, it's pretty important that you have a basic knowledge of python,
because that's what django is built on.
If I can help you with any of these, email me @ kovy.ja...@gmail.com.
Good luck!

There many online resources, and free.
When I started, I did the djangogirls tutorial. It worked really well for me (I

If you are interested in learn by streaming, then you can go through with
learncodeonline website by Hitesh Choudhary. Although it is a paid course
but it would be awesome to learn from there from scratch. The link is this:

it’s written for Django 1.11, a lot of concepts still apply.

You should be OK. But don't try and understand *how* the python in
Django does what it does. Just figure out what you want to do and use
Django to achieve that.

You might need a reasonable understanding of data relationships because
Django converts your pythonic description of those relationships into
actual PostgreSQL tables and provides the API for you to create and use
the data.

You also need to understand the client request and server response
architecture of the web. Again, don't try to figure out the python in
Django which does that. Just use Django methods to save yourself the
effort of coding it yourself.

You'll be good to go as soon as you dive in.

IMO Django is fabulous!

Hi Amir,

You seem to know what you need to do.

Try harder, be positive and pay attention to those little things you think
Python has taken care of for you.

Get yourself through the Django tutorial and you would be good to go.

Re: Django beginner

2017-07-13 Thread Lachlan Musicman
Amir

You will need a basic - very basic - understanding of databases and
webservers.

The webserver will serve your content.
The database will store your content.

For databases, you need to know: how to create one, add a user, give that
user a password. (easy, can google)
For webservers, you need to know how to config to get it serving your
content. (medium, can google - although if you are just developing and
testing locally while you learn, you don't even need to use this - just
./manage runserver )

After that, it's all python.

So - what is it you don't understand?

The Django Tutorial remains one of the best tutorials I've ever used:
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.11/intro/tutorial01/

Cheers
L.

For OOP concepts, have a look at:

(The whole book is online and is useful even for reminding yourself about
things you may already know something about e.g. dictionaries; and it is
good at explaining - honestly, how many CS books have headers like "Getting

Re: django beginner

2015-03-13 Thread Ilya Kazakevich
django-admin creates infrastructure required for your project, and there
should be more than 3 files.

On *nix systems django-admin is py script with shebang, but due to windows
command processor limitations (cmd) on windows there is executable file
which actually calls django-admin.

So, you should open cmd console and type
"c:\Python27\Scripts\django-admin.exe startproject mysite". (I believe you
have python on c:\Python27\ and Django is installed).

The idea is that a beautiful image is frameable. Everything you need
to see is there: It’s everything you want, and it’s very pleasing
because there’s no extra information that you don’t get to see.
Everything’s in a nice package for you. But sublime art is
unframeable: It’s an image or idea that implies that there’s a bigger
image or idea that you can’t see: You’re only getting to look at a
fraction of it, and in that way it’s both beautiful and scary, because
it’s reminding you that there’s more that you don’t have access to.
It’s now sort of left the piece itself and it’s become your own
invention, so it’s personal as well as being scary as well as being
beautiful, which is what I really like about art like that.

Is there anything in your models for the other apps ex: photo, events,
etc... ? syncdb will not do anything with those until you create your

But i have just created a separate app call photo, but when i run syncdb

I don't know to treat this apps separately on the same database
am using sqlite3 django-1.4.13.

How do i create multiple apps on one site?

Thanks in advance.

Re: django beginner

2014-07-02 Thread Lachlan Musicman
You need a ^articles/year/$ in your urls.py if you want to visit
http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles/year/

Your URLs are looking for:

http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles/ - eg http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles/2014
http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles//dd/ - eg
http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles/2014/07/
http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles//dd/{digits} - eg
http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles/2014/07/02

There is no http://127.0.0.1:8000/articles/year/ in that list.

Re: django beginner

2014-07-01 Thread Mike Dewhirst

Step 1 is to work through the excellent tutorial ...

https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.6/

Step 2 is to draw on paper what you want the website to look like and
what the various buttons and links will do.

Step 3 is to look for something which has already been done which might
suit your needs. You could look through Django packages for events,
booking and blog apps.

Provided you don't skip step 1 it will be easy.

Hi,
I am also new to django and I started by reading the django tutorial.
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.6/intro/overview/
It covers installation then shows how to construct a django application.
It takes you step by step in constructing an example application.
I believe it is a very good place to start and understand what django is
and how it works.

My suggestion was, that the Order just contains the customer, the order
date, and all other data, that is unique for one order,
but not the items, that have been ordered. tey would be stored in the
4th table.

So the 4th table could be called OrderItem.

each order item would contain
- to which order it belongs to (Freign key)
- what product has been ordered ( foreign key)
- how many items of the product has been ordered.

So basically a customer command cosists of all OrderItems belonging to
one Order.

As I said before there's many solutions, this is just one.

Re: Django beginner question

2011-08-20 Thread Christian Ramsey
Hi and thank you so much, this provided a ton of clarity, especially
the modelling of the order table with a foreign key to a user, I was
locked on thinking the user table needed to somehow have the orders
within it. But I see I needed to step back.

I've already started to implement all of this and I am trying to
understand the additional table, if the Order table already contains
the user it belongs to, then what will the additional table be set
for, from my perspective would this be to keep the original order?

Thanks so much again.

- Create the User and product Models and create either your own views or
admin views such, that you can populate the Users and Product database.

Then you could work on the view allowing a logged in user to select
products to be put in the shopping cart.

Only then you had to care about how to implement the shopping cart.

I never implemented a shopping application and what I suggest is very
probably neither the most elegant nor the most efficient solution.
But what is clear is, that you should use at least one table more.

Example Suggestion:

User: contains info about the user

Product: info about a product and it's price (though price might be in a
separate table)

Order: Info about the order, which could be ForeignKey to a user, the
order date, and perhaps payment status.

And one table more, which would store one entry of a order:
it would store a oeign Key to a Product, the selected amount and a
ForeignKey to the order it belongs to.

Hope this gave you some ideas of how to get started.

Re: Django beginner question

2011-08-20 Thread Christian Ramsey
Thank you Shawn,

Thank you for your response, I was trying to explain it in detail, I believe I
get the greater whole of the project which I've specified by explaining the
project but the parts I don't I've asked a question about. Maybe my approach is
incorrect, I did not mean that my informative parts were suppose to be answered
but again merely a poke at trying not to be short, but thank you, I will read
the Prepare the question section and see if I can recreate my collection of
queries in a refined way in which I hope you and everyone else would consider
"industrious" and possibly feel the ability to help rather than to lecture.

Cheers.

Re: Django beginner question

2011-08-20 Thread Shawn Milochik

Christian,

We understand that you're a beginner, and there are a lot of people that
are willing to help people new to Django on this list. However, you've
basically laid out an assignment here and asked how to go about it.

That comes across as asking others to do your work for you. You won't
find much assistance when you give the appearance of being either
incompetent or lazy, which is how this comes across.

The best way to learn is by doing, so go start your project. Get as far
as you can, and when you have a specific question explain how you got
stuck and what you tried to fix it. Then I'm sure you'll get useful replies.

Please read the "Prepare the question" section here:
https://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/UsingTheMailingList

Your initial e-mail violates nearly every tip listed. That list was
compiled specifically to allow people who want help to get the most out
of this list, and for those who enjoy helping others to avoid wasting
their time.

Django beginner question

2011-08-20 Thread Christian Ramsey
Hi I am a Django beginner and I am just getting into creating apps
with it, my goal was to create a simple
order application for practice. The app will be somewhat like this:

1.A user will login or create an account.
2.A user will order from a list of items and depending on the item it
may have size and/or type, some will have preset sizes and no type at
all.
3. Upon purchase which for this demo will not have a monetary system
integrated, so as a replacement it will email the admin email with the
details and also display the order to them for printing once they are
finished.
4. The user will be able to check his/her orders in which the admin
will be able to set to pending or shipped to each order
5. The admin will also be able to view all orders from every user and
delete, edit, mark the details of the order.

Pretty straightforward I thought but I can't seem to wrap my head
around the models mostly and especially the product table.

For the products would I be creating an array of different orders and
a separate array of sizes in the controller and assigning that to the
form?

My 3 classes in my model are currently Users, Products, Orders
I am not sure how a order from the products is assigned to a user in
the database,
does the Users class need to have both products and orders inside of
it as a one to many for both?

So when I create the form that submits this information how does it
assign that order to that product to that user?

Please Help a django Beginner!

2011-04-15 Thread Aviv Giladi
Hey guys,

I am an experienced Python developer starting to work on web service
backend system. The system feeds data (constantly) from the web to a
MySQL database. This data is later displayed by a frontend side (there
is no connection between the frontend and the backend). The backend
system constantly downloads flight information from the web (some of
the data is fetched via APIs, and some by downloading and parsing
text / xls files). I already have a script that downloads the data,
parses it, and inserts it to the MySQL db - all in a big loop. The
frontend side is just a bunch of php pages that properly display the
data by querying the MySQL server.

It is crucial that this web service be robust, strong and reliable.
Therefore, I have been looking into the proper ways to design it, and
got the following recommendation:
django as the framework (over Apache).
wrapping my sources with Piston for API usage.
All if this sounds great. I used django before to write websites (aka
request handlers that return data). However I don't see how django can
fulfill a role of a constant running (non request-serving) system -
being that it uses views/forms, which are not a part of my backend
system. Is want I want at all possible / advisable with django? Is
django what you would recommend for this?
If so, could you please refer me to some documentation / help files
more specific to my needs?

Thank you so much,
Aviv

There is no such thing as "Django 0.97". Releases of Django are as follows:

0.90
0.91
0.95
0.96
1.0

(with minor bugfix releases on several of them, like "0.96.1" and "1.0.2")

Question from django beginner

2008-12-02 Thread Vince

Hi everyone,

I'm new to django so perhaps those are really simple questions so
sorry about that:

I had an php page already working (css formatted, imgs and
everything), it's a very simple page for uploading zip files to a
server. The server (system Apache 2.2.4 with django) has already the
main app powered with django, so Apache is configured to go through
django. I tried to do the fileupload through PHP, but couldn't figure
out how to make main django app and php fileupload page working
together. As soon as the \location tags of python, django were added to
httpd.conf, PHP page stopped working.

   SetHandler python-program
   PythonPath "['D:\MainwebServer'] + sys.path"
   PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython
   SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE server.settings
   PythonDebug On

   SetHandler None

   SetHandler None

CARGAR MODULO PHP
#Loadfile "D:/PHP/php5ts.dll"
#PHPIniDir "D:/PHP/"
#AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php
#AddHandler application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
#AddType application/x-httpd-php .html

So my first question goes here: Does anyone know how to share both PHP
and django pages in the same web project ?

Anyway, My 2nd move was to try to make the fileupload by using django
itself, so here I already have a rather simple upload page, it works
already but I want to add some more stuff:

1. As I had already the PHP page working I have all the design done
(css, img, etc) I don't know how to easily "move" the html design to
the django template (tried to point to MEDIA_ROOT but css doesn't
apply)

Here's my template

Analyst DEMO server

{% block body %}

Subir fichero ZIP a servidor DEMO

{{ form }}

  Resultados de subida.

{% endblock %}

and here's the old php page, it uses javascript to show/hide some
labels once the fileupload was performed and if it was success or not:

http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml";>

   Main DEMO server

Main DEMO server

 Subiendo fichero...

 Fichero (zip):

So:

2. Is there any built-in opton in Django (0.97 version) to unzip
files. I would need to unzip the file to a folder once the upload has
been done.

Thanks a lot in advance for the help

Vince

Use models.ForeignKey('self')

Did you know about mutation? :-)

Upon seeing a ForeignKey Django tries to create backward accessors from
the parent model to children. In your case it should be "Leg.body_set"
that will fetch all Legs with a ForeignKey to a particular Body.

However since you have two ForeignKeys to the same model Django needs to
have two such relations: all bodies for a LeftLeg and all bodies for a
RightLeg. The only problem that it doesn't know how to _name_ these
relations. It certainly can't have two different "body_set"s on a Leg.
So the only thing that it asks you is to choose two names for the relations:

 leftLeg = models.ForeignKey(Leg, related_name='bodies_if_left')
 rightLeg = models.ForeignKey(Leg, related_name='bodies_if_right')

My naming skills are known to be lousy so choose your own according to
what these things really mean.

Hi! Here's a new Django beginner with a few questions.

2007-01-10 Thread Sebastien Armand [Pink]
Hello everyone,

I'm new to Django and trying to set up a small website with it. I've only
started creating the model and already got a few troubles!

1. I need to relate an object to itself! For example if my object is a
Person, I want to have a field mother which will be the key of an other
Person record. But since the model Person is not defined it doesn't work so
I tried:

class Person(models.Model):
...
mother = models.ForeignKey('Person')
...

Will this work?

2. I need to have many fields that are ForeignKeys of the same kind of
objects but don't want a many to many relation as I know that there will
always be the same small number of references.
For example if I've got a Body class and a Legs class, I know that I'll
never have a body with more than 2 legs and it would be easier to have a
leftLeg = ForeignKey(Leg) field
and a
rightLeg = ForeignKey(Leg) field

but this causes many errors when I try to validate my model.

Error:
Accessor for field leftLeg clashes with related field Leg.__set. Add a related name argument to the definition for leftLeg

which really doesn't mean anything to me.

Is it possible to do those kind of things? How?

Thanks
