I must correct myself: this causes no problem if the center and right

OK. What I was trying to do was have an image in the left header, text in the right
header, and an underbar.

It did not matter where I put the underbar, things would screw up if I had a table on
that page that extended past the bottom of the page.

I have just had a 300+ page document printed by a commercial printer and the fonts are

DOCBOOK-APPS: Admon graphics in tables with multiple paras

2001-07-26 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

I have been investigating my problems with Admon Graphics a bit further.

I now have admon graphics looking good since I formatted admonitions as
tables, *but*, whenever I use more than one para in an admonitition, I
find that I do not get %para-sep% of space between them.

It struct me that there are are lots of problems with using all sorts of

Look in the *.log file. TeX will give you an error message when it

is looking in to find the files.

 Thanks Kevin.

For a JPEG I get the Latex error message ! LaTeX Error: Cannot

The EPS shows in the log as test.eps

For testing, I am using the following XML, which is processed with:
 openjade -t tex -d /usr/local/docbook/print/docbook.dsl
 /usr/local/docbook/dtds/decls/xml.dcl test.xml
 pdfjadetex test.tex

The resulting PDF has a blank space where the EPS should go (taken

This does not do what I expect.

While position-point-y: %bf-size% when the external-graphic is being set

platforms also.

Thanks for the heads-up... I've been using libxslt (on a Linux box)

After reading your note, I went and downloaded the 1.0 release. The only
gotcha is that you need to also download Norm's 1.41 XSL stylesheets
to use libxslt with chunking. (Norm rewrote part of chunker.xsl and
Daniel Veillard (libxslt author) modified part of libxslt for the new
way of working with the stylesheets.)

But I can report that the two work very well together and all the

2001-07-07 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi again,

I have isolated my underbar in the center header. It turns up now in an
SpSOtherBackCenterHeader ...

On page 14, 22, and 30, it turns up about 12 points above where it shows
up on all other pages ... and I can't seem to change it in any way ...

DOCBOOK-APPS: Example document and stylesheet that screws up headers...

2001-07-07 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

I now have an example document where the addition of an empty section at
the front of the existing sections in the document is enough to screw up
the headers on the first page, as well as the footers.

My headers contain an under-bar, or rule. By adding this one empty
section, my rule is pushed up about 12 points.

Can anyone suggest ways around this?

DOCBOOK-APPS: Stylesheet languages and giving you fine control overwhere things go

2001-07-03 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

One of the things I think I need to be able to do in stylesheets is to
place objects at arbitrary places on a page, and it seems that DSSSL and
XSL(T) don't give me that level of control.

For example, I might want to place the word Preliminary diagonally
across the back of every page in outline form, with the primary text
appearing in front of it.

In some cases, I also want to be able to take a block of text and center
it, vertically, on a page. I don't seem to be able to do that with
DSSSL. Don't know about XSL(T).

In other cases, I want to set up the header and footer of each page with
content that I want o put in specific places and want to ensure that
they align properly.

For example, I want to have text on one side of the header aligning with
the bottom of a graphic on the other side. Indeed, the decision in DSSSL
to divide the header up into three regions seems to have been a mistake.
I would rather that it be one area that I can decide how to format.

I would also like to be able to insert text at any angle I want to.

What stylesheet languages give me these?

 I'm feeling very pleased.

For the first time ever I am able to generate a DocBook book with double
sided printing correctly using the DSSSL, openjade, jadetex toolchain.

dsssl-style sheets version 1.62 (1.70 will also work for my applications).
+ a patch to prevent the table of contents/lists of tables page numbers from

restarting from (i). [Richard Sharpe recently posted one which might be
bettter than the one I was using]
+ a patch to make the recto/verson pages print on the same piece of paper
(this is from Richard Sharpe - hopefully this will make it into CVS before
 too long)

As I said, I'm sure there are additional problems (table of contents
generation for preface being one ;-), but for our documents every thing
seems to be working how I want it.

DOCBOOK-APPS: Bug in LOT processing with DSSSL 1.70

2001-07-02 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

There is a bug in the LOT processing of DSSSL 1.70. If you have a
complex document, and I am not sure what complex means yet (see below),
then an unmodified DSSSL 1.70 with a simple stylesheet that switches on
LOT processing (by specifying the elements that should be in the LOT)
will generate TeX that causes pdfjadetex (with JadeTex 3.7) to blow up
with the following message:

Link Annotations can't be nested from pdfjadetex

The errors relate to pars to the LOT.

I have a very simple document with one chapter, and a table and a
figure, and this is processed correctly.

However, a more complex example with about 350 pages and a hundred
figures and examples blows up.

I don't yet know when it starts.

DOCBOOK-APPS: Admonition Graphics again, etc ...

2001-05-10 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

These comments apply to OpenJade 1.3, DocBook SGML and DSSSL.

I have been playing around with admonition graphics again a bit, and the
best I can achieve is the following:

 +-+
 | gra |
+-+ The admon starts here and goes for as many lines as I have defined
and the admon para lines up with standard para's in the rest of
the document, and there is space between the graphic and the
admon para and the graphic sits in the margin ...

However, I cannot get it so that the top of the graphic aligns with the top
of the para, and looking at things like (make table ...) and that whole
stuff, there does not seem to be anything that handles alignment in the
vertical direction, while horizontal alignment is well catered for.

Does this seem reasonable?

If you look through the DSSSL stylesheets, you will find that (make

don't think that this is well catered for in the DSSSL stylesheets, and is

Hi,

I have fixed the little problem to do with recto and verso pages getting an

Here are the patches ...

They stop the code in dbttlpg.dsl from doing a (make
simple-page-sequence...) for the recto and verso page for the title page,
and shift that back into dbdivis.dsl.

Seems to work for me ...

However, I needed to modify jadetex.dtx slightly to set some variables that
I cannot convince OpenJade to pass into jadetex ... Will have to look at
why that does not work, but a couple of weeks.

DOCBOOK-APPS: Correct handling of recto and verso title pages withDSSSL

2001-04-17 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

I have fixed the little problem to do with recto and verso pages getting an
extra page after them if JadeTeX is doing its stuff and ensuring that a
simple-page-sequence starts on a recto page ...

If there is any interest, I can send patches ...

DOCBOOK-APPS: Figure titles are too far from the figure

2001-04-16 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

I have specified in dbparam.dsl that I want Figure and Example and Table
titles after the objects they label.

My table titles are in the right place, but Figure titles are too far from
the figure.

It seems to be the case that all the (make paragraphs ...) involved (one
for the graphic, for example, and one for the title, are inserting two
\endPar{} elements, and then the title as sbMin etc of 6pt ...

Is there any way I can eliminate all that blank space?

Look at the templates in print/dbcompon.dsl that handle headers and
footers. A little tree-walking from the point of insertion should allow
you to extract the book title and subtitle fairly easily.

Yes, indeed ... Unfortunately, I do not understand enough about the
structure of the tree to get there.

I tried using sgml-tree-root or some such, but that was a dismal failure.

How do I get from the current-node to, say, the top of the tree, which is

What I would really like is something like:

I suspect that I will have to play with tables to do this ... can anyone

DOCBOOK-APPS: Inserting eps or pdf documents into a DocBook document

2001-04-10 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

Sebastian Rahtz suggested yesterday that inserting a PDF graphic is going
to be better than an EPS (or PS) because pdfTeX does not understand (E)PS ...

Since the drawing tool I use can generate eps files, this will give a

What will it take to get DocBook to accept a PDF or EPS file for graphics?

*All* I use for the graphics in my printed manual are EPS files. Something
like 45 or 50 of them in the file. Works perfectly fine for me.
Most of them are actually screen shots in Linux which were taken using
the Gimp (graphics tool) and then saved as EPS (for printing) and JPEG
(for online version).

To create my PDF manual, I've used a number of different tools, but have
now settled on 'sgml2x' (http://sgml2x.sourceforge.net/) which is
really simply a frontend to openjade and JadeTex it works perfectly
fine with EPS files.

Hmmm, I don't understand what the sgml2x does?

I have managed to get DocBook to understand PDF as a graphic format. A
small change to the DTD and to dbparams.dsl was required ... However, the
EPS route looks simpler ... Man the graphics look much better than saving
my drawings as PNG.

I don't know... sgml2x *calls* pdfjadetex! And it works fine with
EPS files... in fact, I've always thought pdfjadetex worked fine with
EPS so I have been extremely surprised to see the recent suggestions
to NOT use EPS files. Have you tried it and had it fail?

Oh yes, it fails with a message about LaTeX not understanding eps ...

I wish I could get SGML2X so I could see what it does!

OK, I got sgml2x, and I can now see what it does.

Firstly, Dan, did you have to do anything special to make it work? The
setup instructions are Abys Mal and it gives wierd errors when I set the
SGML_CATALOG_FILES to what I think they should be.

How some ever, what it does is:

   jade - TEX
   jadetex - dvi
   dvips - ps
   ps2pdf - pdf

The dvips step seems to require that all graphics be in eps or ps,
otherwise it inserts a raw jpg or whatever file. However, once you satisfy
that requirement, the EPS files are indeed inserted in the document, but
they loose any scaling you requested of DocBook.

Dan, do you draw your diagrams to the exact scale you need in a document?

Now to figure out who to get this to work with db2pdf.

Nah, it seems that Gimp must be writing something in the images that the

DOCBOOK-APPS: Title page recto and verso page problems

Hi,

I have finally discovered an element in JadeTeX.dtx that allows me to
switch on a blank page at the end of a Simple Page Sequence if it does not
start on a right hand (recto) page ...

However, the title pages are both built with a (make simple-page-sequence
...),
which causes a blank page after each.

This is clearly not good. I can probably hack it out, by putting a moving
the (make simple-page-sequence ...) to dbdivis.dsl rather than dbttlpg.dsl
and putting the appropriate elements in between the recto and verso pages ...

Does anyone have any comments?

I also have to figure out why OpenJade is not setting the appropriate
variables in the TeX output to ensure that things happen the way they should.

DOCBOOK-APPS: Re:Headers with an underbar and make rule and JadeTeXinsertRule

At some distant time in the past, I said:

Hi,

I have been doing a lot of investigation on why I get an unsightly amount
of space between my header and the rule underneath it that I have inserted

Well, I now have it working essentially the way I want it, modulo a couple
of pages where the rule does not stretch all the way across the page.

The solution was to insert \nointerlineskip AT THE RIGHT POINT in the
\insertRule macro in jadetex.dtx.

In now have headers and footers alternating left and right, as well as a
hrule hard up against the bottom of the header and a hrule hard up against
the top of the footer.

On to the document contents now ...

DOCBOOK-APPS: Headers with an underbar and make rule and JadeTeXinsertRule

2001-03-28 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

I have been doing a lot of investigation on why I get an unsightly amount
of space between my header and the rule underneath it that I have inserted
in my DSSSL hacks ...

I am convinced more than ever it is the insertRule macro in JadeTeX that is
causing the problem, and I have been forced to delve into TeX far more than
I wanted to.

While I am currently investigating this still, it seems that the problem
may be related to the fact that 'make rule' can be added any where in a
sequence or paragraph or wherever, and is perhaps intended to be inserted
on the current line between two pieces of text. In which case, it should
have the same \baselineskip as the text on the line.

It also seems to be being inserted in an \hbox, which is perhaps where it
is inheriting its \baselineskip, and thus the white space I don't want when
I want to underline a whole header line.

Is it possible in TeX to figure out if you are in verticle mode (at the end
of a paragraph)? If so, then perhaps a different macro can be used.

Just some rambling at the moment, as I research this some more.

Welcome to the club. Do you get your headers and footers alternating?

What I'd like to have in print versions is:

that affect simple page sequences (like \cleardoublepage) affect them
individually.

As I understand the DSSSL stylesheets, in dbprint/dbttlpg.dsl, the recto
page of the title page is the title page, and the verso page is what
I'm referring to as the copyright page. Is my understanding correct?

I get the book title on the recto title page, and the copyright on the
verso title page, and I have not really hacked dbttlpg.dsl at all.

If my understanding is correct, is there something in the stylesheets
that is causing the extra blank pages when %two-side% is turned on?
Is there something that's causing the copyright page to be it's own
simple page sequence?

And yes, I have tried installing JadeTex 3.5. It does NOT clear up
this problem.

Where did you get JadeTex 3.5?

Many thanks,
Debbie

this is fixed in the version I have here. since someone introduced new

work until today!

Yes, that is definitely fixed! It is great ...

Why do you need to change Jadetex?

Because I cannot get it to do a page-number-restart on a make
simple-page-sequence for me at all. I have page one of a chapter showning
as Page 1-11, rather than 1-1.

 Hi,

I am continuing to bang my head against the wall on this.

It seems that the latest version of JadeTex I have, 3.3, inserts
PageNumberRestart% macro? calls into the TeX output, and I cannot find them
 defined anywhere.

However, if I add a \pagenumbering{arabic} to the TeX not far after that
call, I get my page numbers starting at 1 again. Now to figure out why I do
not get the right behaviour normally.

OK, by careful use of make-box with a background of black and make

Thank you very much. Now I have to figure out how to adjust the box to be
the length in printing terms of the string I am printing, and how to print
two objects side by side ...

But I have not tested it with the DSSSL, only with XSL, and it works well.

DOCBOOK-APPS: Trying to use make table caused lots of problems

2001-03-04 Thread Richard Sharpe

Hi,

Boy, did I get into trouble. I was trying to use make table and make
table-cell to build a couple of things side by side, and although Jade did
not complain, pdfjadetex did, and failed to produce PDF.

Is this a known problem?

Also, every page is a front page. Does anyone know what that is?

What I should say here is that in the body of the chapter, page numbers are

Something is going wrong with the make link by the looks of it, and there
are a whole lot of errors in the log file generated by pdfjadetex about
\PageNumbering being an undefined control sequence ...

Also, every page is a front page. Does anyone know what that is?

DOCBOOK-APPS: I thought I had the display of admonition graphicsworking for pdf files

I thought I had the display of admonition graphics working when I
discovered that in dbadmon.dsl, display? was set to #f, and I needed to

Then, I thought that I needed to code (graphics-file ($admon-graphics$)),

but, I was wrong!

Can anyone tell me the trick to getting admonition graphics working in the
