Hi guys,

Just to demo the functionality of the public browsing interface at
http://media.libreoffice.org:8081 / http://media.libreoffice.org/ I
just wanted to post links to the Afresco documentation that avoid the
need for you to log-in in order to access them:

http://media.libreoffice.org:8081/file/English/Community/Alfresco_Documentation/Alfresco_Enterprise_4_0_2_Administrator.pdf
is the administrator's guide.

http://media.libreoffice.org:8081/file/English/Community/Alfresco_Documentation/Getting_Started_with_Alfresco_Share_Collaboration_for_Enterprise.pdf
is the getting started guide for collaboration using Alfresco.

http://media.libreoffice.org:8081/file/English/Community/Alfresco_Documentation/Alfresco_Web_Quick_Start_User_Help_Enterprise.pdf
is the quick start guide for rolling-out a team/project-specific
website via Alfresco.

Hi :)
I don't like the background colour and the link to the Faq is wrong.  It should
go to
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq

Most people like blue but i prefer greens, reds, perhaps this tan #fde9a9
(which has been used on a number of other pages).

However i really like the new way (despite what i said above).  It looks smart,
neat and tidy.  It seems to be more relevant and useful.  I can't remember the
old one now but i vaguely remember just trying to ignore it.  Despite what i
said above i have already found it useful :)

Good work :)
Thanks and regards from

My strong preference is for ODT, because the Alfresco instructions are part of
the Contributor's Guide, which is in ODT. (The chapters can be downloaded from
from the wiki.) The instructions could, of course, also be wikified and put on
the wiki in that form as well. I had always intended for all of the
Contributor's Guide to be in wiki format as well as ODT, but obviously that
hasn't happened yet.

Or you could start with wiki and we can generate an ODT from that; it will need
a bit of tweaking, but that's not a big drama.

Hi Tom, guys,

The only other thing I can add is that I have tried hard to involve
other people in the administration of the VPS that Alfresco is
installed on, and of the Alfresco platform itself. That includes
people from the LibreOffice project (notably the TDF sysadmin team),
people from the Alfresco project, people from Apache OO.o and
technical support that I've paid for privately.

It is not a satisfactory situation to have an important team resource
such as an ECM system dependent on one single person's management.

If it is decided to use Alfresco in the future, I'm firmly hoping that
TDF sysadmins and others will share the admin workload. This is
essential for reliable, trouble-free operation.

All the upgrading is complete. There is no further work to do in that
respect. Whether or not the team still wishes to use Alfresco is a
debate that I'll leave you guys to decide about.

I can only point out that, when left in peace and not bullied,
Alfresco has been pretty stable and reliable. The only outages were
entirely due to human error: the last upgrade was incorrectly
executed. I certainly wouldn't see any need to upgrade the platform
any further until long into the future: all past issues are now
resolved (non-handling of accented characters in folder names: fixed;
intermittent failures with multiple-file uploads: *vastly* improved).

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Alfresco upgrade nearing completion

2011-09-13 Thread David Nelson
Hi,

http://documentation.libreoffice.org is now offline, and all new work
on Alfresco will now be done on the Share interface at
http://alfresco.libreoffice.org.

I am in the process of manually uploading all the previous content
there. This is likely to be over this coming weekend. About 30% is
done already. I have a backup on my local system in addition to one on
the new server and a backup of the old server partition. I'll be
restoring everything fairly much as it was on the old server, but
taking account of a workflow that I have devised with Jeff Potts of
the Alfresco project (more about that soon).

As soon as the data is restored, I'll be updating the contributor
documentation so that people can get good guidance in using the
Alfresco Share interface. It's much faster and more user-friendly than
the old Explorer interface - especially since the new server is a
100%-dedicated machine with 8Gb of memory.

Good news is that the past problem of inability to browse folders with
accented characters in the folder name has now been solved, so that
localization teams will be able to make effective use of the new
system.

In addition, I can install language packs so that many localization
teams will be able to use the platform in their preferred language.

I have not yet migrated user accounts. Anyone who would like access
before I do can post here to the list, and I will quickly create you an
account and send you new credentials.

I'll write back with more news in a few days when I've done more work,
but I'll that won't be before the weekend. Meanwhile, I'll be watching
the list to deal with any account creation requests and any questions.

Anyone who wants documents posted on the new server is welcome to send
them to me for the next few days, and I will be sure to post your
content with the other stuff. It's probably easier to do it that way
for the next few days while I migrate all our content.

Thanks for your patience with this, and more news/info soon,

2011-09-09 Thread David Nelson
Hi Jean, hi Tom,

Well it looks like it won't be possible to do a transparent rollover
because the reconfiguration of the new IP address in DNS will take 24
hours or so to reverberate around the Web.

So, when I'm ready (after having manually transferred our existing
content), I'll post back with forewarning.

As I'll be doing this manually (so as not to possible transfer across
the past problems we were having in the current installation of
Alfresco) I'll only be transferring the documentation content. It will
be necessary to recreate all the user accounts from zero.

I'll create accounts for you two to start with, and then I'll be
looking out for other people re-requesting Alfresco access and will
fix them up quickly.

Anyway, more over the next few days.

At the same time, I'm upgrading the server in terms of memory and

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Alfresco: upgrade from 3.4c to 3.4d to start Thursday, August 11

2011-08-15 Thread David Nelson
Hi,

The upgrade to 3.4d is complete.

The good news is that all went went well, and our data is safe and sound.

The bad news is that it still didn't resolve the issue of the
inability, under the Share interface
(http://alfresco.libreoffice.org), to browse folder names with an
accented character in their name. This problem currently eludes me,
and I'll be working on troubleshooting that with Jeff Potts,
Alfresco's Chief Community Officer.

However, that doesn't affect the work of the English docs team, and
the Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese teams can still successfully do
any work they like via the Explorer interface at
http://documentation.libreoffice.org, which will not be retired before
the above problem is solved.

Aside from the aforementioned troubleshooting, our next task will be
to get a system of user groups, permissions and workflow rules in
place.

I don't expect to be able to do anything myself about this before the
weekend, but Jeremy might possibly be doing some.

@Tom: thanks for the kind words. ;-)

Alfresco has now been rolled over to libreoffice.org subdomains.

Your usual interface (Alfresco Explorer) is exposing on
  http://alfresco.libreoffice.org
in German. Please hit the login link, choose English as your
interface language and then login as usual. Things will return to
normal. We will figure out the solution to this little... anomaly...
  in the next few days.

Alfresco Share is exposing on http://documentation.libreoffice.org
At the moment, you have to login (use your usual credentials), but
Samphan and I will be reconfiguring this to just show a public
  interface ASAP.
