[Dorset] Working with Linux and open source

2010-10-16 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke

Hey list!

I recently quit my job (because I'd not been paid for 3 months). I'd
always talked about becoming a contractor and doing freelance work, so
with this incentive I decided to take the plunge.

I know several people on the list work some or all of the time with
Linux and/or FOSS, which is something I'd very much like to do too. I'd
love to hear from anyone who cares to share:-

* What it is that you do
* What you like or dislike about it
* How you ended up doing it

All the best,

John

Hey John,
I lost my job 3 months ago, same story, no pay.
I do FOSS - Linux and Windows, obviously I haven't made any money, but I
use it as a CV builder. Also it is great fun and educational.
Responses typically vary between "not enough experience for Linux" to
"Too much going on, he wouldn't concentrate on his job" to "Yikes, he
might replace me!"
Twerps.

I did a full scan, and it found about 50 test files deliberately left
there by Ubuntu to test Clam.
Nothing 'hot' though, nothing at all.

Where are you using it Simon?

I was under the impression that its primary use was on mail servers for
scanning attachments, rather than on workstations. I guess if you share
files with other people you might want to ensure that you are not a
conduit for infected files, but other than that I wonder if it's worth
the overhead of running a scanner on a Linux desktop machine.

Re: [Dorset] clamav

2010-10-16 Thread Simon O'Riordan
As I understand it Sean, the mail scanner is the only daemon it runs.
Full scans (much easier when you use the GUI) find files that are
suspicious and quarantine them.
Any deletion is manual and at the users risk; there is no active scan
like on windows, it just finds files when you tell it to scan.
That way resources aren't consumed.

I strongly suggest you get certified. I took RHCE as most work is Red
Hat based. I've recently passed LPI level 1 and I am now doing level 2
as a more generic qualification. Look at jobserve and jobsite for the
skills they are asking for. Most sys admin contracts are London based so
if you want to work from home, you'd have a better chance being a
programmer (like python). There are more full time jobs than contracts
available, but nothing in this area. The recession should help Linux
expand but I'm not seeing any increase in contracts yet. It is still
growing slowly but steady. You will find it difficult to find work
initially but once you've started, it should then be easier.

edge software-defined radio platform. This is a comprehensive project

Are there any
 Dorset members at all close to Melksham?  I'd like to
run an install day here in Melksham - maybe at the old Wiltshire
College Campus (if I can gain access), or possibly at the company I
work for. Hopefully this would be the start of a regular group that
are into hacking hardware and Linux (not quite a LUG). I know very few
people in the area and am keen to meet like minded engineers that
would like to take technology into the community.

I need a few people to form a core group and hatch a solid proposal
before going public with the idea.

Any comments or suggestions very welcome!

That's not obvious at all.

I run a small business that deals only in Linux, and we make money.

Re: [Dorset] Using GtK 2 For Interfaces

2010-10-16 Thread Simon O'Riordan
Solved - with a neat workaround.
Using the 'layout' sample code from the sole Mono example, it was very
easy to use DrawLayout instead of DrawGlyphs, now that everything else
is sorted.
DrawGlyphs was possibly overkill, useful for Hebrew, Arabic, Mandarin
etc, but not strictly necessary for standard English fonts.
Nice feature is that when I use the Font selection button on my GUI, the
text updates without hitting the write button again.
Here's the central code:

Pango.Layout layout = new Pango.Layout(this.PangoContext);
layout.Width = Pango.Units.FromPixels(400);//the 400 is width
layout.Wrap = Pango.WrapMode.Word;
layout.Alignment = Pango.Alignment.Left;
layout.FontDescription =
Pango.FontDescription.FromString(fontbutton1.FontName  );
layout.SetMarkup("" +
"Simon" + "");

Gdk.Window drawable = drawingarea1.GdkWindow ;
Gdk.GC glick = new Gdk.GC(drawable);

drawable.DrawLayout( glick, 20, 20, layout);
