Well that was interesting, I assumed you meant the

mplayer http://www.windriders.co.uk/video/eastbourne2007small.wmv

command, below is the output, I was surprised when mplayer started playing (and
complained). Trying to run mplayer via the gui just fails, does not give any
errors.

For the record the PC is a AMD Athlon XP (1.7ghz) 1gbm memory with an onboard
S3
Savage video.

The quit bit at the bottom of the output is where I closed the video

OK Progress of sorts

I can play the video (with sound and pictures) providing I use Iceweasel
3.5.15,
still does not work in chrome.

I can play the video locally providing I use Gnome Mplayer although the play
back is very choppy. Trying to use Mplayer on its own I only get audio, if I
try Xine it complains about unsupported codec WVP2 but plays the audio.

I have both the win32 and codecs folders in /usr/lib/ and both seem to hold
identical files (in fact all files in the codecs folder of symlinked to the
win32 folder)and include the wmvadvd.dll file

http://code.google.com/p/mplayer-ce/source/browse/trunk/mplayer/etc/codecs.conf#1277
suggests that codec is in "wmvadvd".

$ locate wmvadvd

I can confirm the problem is a lack of video. I can play other .wmv

It plays fine here with mplayer from Medibuntu on Ubuntu 8.04.

 $ apt-cache policy mplayer
 mplayer:

 $

If you hunt through the below you'll notice mplayer doesn't even look
for a video codec. It just reports no video stream.

No, I don't think that's true...

$ mplayer eastbourne2007small.wmv

[snip]

Playing eastbourne2007small.wmv.
ASF file format detected.

The output here includes

 Selected video codec: [wmvadmo] vfm: dmo (Windows Media Video Adv

So we both agree wmvadmo is desirable but you, and possibly OP Tim,
don't have it. I suspect the problem is down to Debian not shipping a
binary that can cope with the format, presumably because of freeness
