Re: [Dorset] OT: Backup Software for Windows

2012-03-05 Thread Dominic Lonsdale
I am using Backup , running on Ubuntu, to a Verbatim drive plugged into
a USB socket.

It is clever enough to delay if the drive is not plugged in and then to
do the backup (automatically) when the drive is eventually plugged in at
some later time.

Nic

Re: [Dorset] Public Spirited BT. Not.

2010-02-02 Thread Dominic Lonsdale
>From the BT site;

Q. What is BT FON?

A. BT FON is an initiative between BT and FON that aims to give all its
members access to wireless broadband wherever they are in the world.
This is possible because all BT FON members agree to securely share a
portion of their Wi-Fi bandwidth through a SEPARATE channel on their
wireless router with other members who are in range of their wireless
router. These wireless routers become known as "BT FON hotspots".

Q. What happens if someone uses my broadband connection to access an
illegal site? Can I prove that it wasn't me accessing the sites?

A. When the visitor accesses the Internet it is through a independent
channel and so any Internet activity will be clearly separate from your
home network.

I am going to say, Not So (though I may be corrected).

The torrent running FON user will have signed on to the BT FON
connection using his BT log-in and will be identifiable as a seperate
entity.

However, I fully accept your implication that this is unclear legal
territory - I think I will ask BT and report back to you later.

This could be interesting.

Re: [Dorset] Public Spirited BT. Not.

2010-01-31 Thread Dominic Lonsdale
I am a bit suprised by this since I am a fan of "FON".

To explain, (if you did not already know)
BT broadband customers call allow other BT customers who are "away from
home" to use the seperate FON wifi signal from their router.
This is very useful when one is out and about.

The FON traffic should only use a small part of ones broadband and not
interfere BUT if you only have a very slow connection then this little
bit of extra use appears to cause a problem.

I will continue to allow FON on my router. It costs me nothing, it does
not cause interference and more importantly I can use other FON routers
when I am away from home.
Since I have 4 meg speeds (even when my children are on line gaming) I
do notice the extra.

[Dorset] Could you test a Web Site ?

2009-10-07 Thread Dominic Lonsdale
Could I ask you to test a web site for me ?

Without wishing to stereotype Linux users as bearded, real-ale swilling,
sandalled, Morris Dancing Lib-Dem voters; I think I can assume that you
might have an interest in Beer.

Hall & Woodhouse (Badger Brewery) have a promotion running based on a
web site;
www.badgergame.co.uk

I believe that the site has been written in such a way that only the IE
Browser on Windows will work. I have tried Firefox on Ubuntu to access
the page to register and it doesn't work.

Could I ask you to try and register and then make a mild & polite
complaint if my assumption is correct ?

(Or correct me if I am wrong).

Regards,

Nic

PS. The closest I came to Morris Dancing was when I hit one on a
motorbike and went over the bonnet.
