Re: [Dorset] 10 Things I'd change in linux
hi Natalie, I never said automated GUIs. CLI options can be presented in a GUI with documentation available when you click the ? button for example. There is no need to dumb anything down, just to be a bit more graphical in the way an app interact with the user (who may choose to use the CLI but it should be a choice, not an obligation). In some instances, a GUI could also say for such and such options, use the CLI. Like it or not, users are getting used to touch screens and such, so having to type in text (or copy and paste text) seems a bit unfriendly to them. GUI is only about presentation and interaction, it's not about anything automated, it's not about content. you are correct, of course, saying that GUIs are not about automation, and I take your point about the current trends (ie touch screen usage and little need to type). there's nothing wrong with making it easy for average user to type a report, email their family, print a picture, record their music, make funny pictures using Photoshop, keep track of their accounts with a spreadsheet etc, all I'm saying is that there's more to keeping a computer running (ie admin) and point'n'click tends to get in the way for many of those tasks (not least because it encourages 'ignorance' (if that isn't too strong a word) which is a hinderance when having to deal with malware/rootkits/etc). (don't get me wrong, that 'ignorance' allows many of us to earn a good living. ;)) Andrew R Paterson (2 November 2010 20:33) thanks for the reminder re history, easy to forget. Sean Gibbins (2 November 2010 18:20) why does Linux need to change beyond the continuous improvement we already see? I'll qualify that further by asking anyone answering it to step back from this release or that particular release and ponder it over, say, the last five years and several distributions. yes, there have been big changes (udev/HAL, FUSE, etc) and, on the whole, they've been worth it IMO. I'd suggest that one area where we would benefit from improvements is better integration with Windoze, particularly the MS Exchange/Outlook combo (as mentioned earlier, though that's obviously not Linux kernel territory). -- regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Crown Hotel, Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-11-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue

Clearer organisation for data and settings saved by apps would be great. Whenever I look for data or settings saved by an app, I need to google to find out which folder that app saves its data and settings to. yes, things used to be easier before the 'Windoze-ification' of Linux started; most app's will create user-specific stuff somewhere below your (user) home, system-wide app settings are commonly found below '/etc/', '/usr/lib/' or '/usr/share'. I find that the various sections of the manual often detail the locations. 4. I’m confused as to what is the difference between “preferences” and “administration” in Ubuntu. How about a central control panel? I don't use *buntu but I understand 'preferences' to mean app and user-specific stuff while 'administration' is all about your system. wouldn't a central control panel simply make things more ambiguous? 5. Why am I seeing several versions of Linux at boot-up? This is messy. what do you mean? can you copy'n'paste an example? 6. Users shouldn’t have to use the command line, only developers/tinkerers should. Make everything available via the GUI, including the documentation. that's what Windoze and Apple offer already, time to 'upgrade'?? ;) and, you know, most administrative tasks get done much more quickly by typing a command rather than pointing and clicking. (besides, no one stopping you from encapsulating your tasks in a script and supplying a clickable front-end) 7. Obviously, nothing is perfect and apps do crash on Linux sometimes. However, I’ve never seen an error message as to why. When there is a fatal crash, an alert dialog wouldn’t go amiss. Yes, I’m sure I can go and look for info in some log but are you expecting a user to do this? that's what logs are for!! too many users click their little dialogs shut before the brain kicks in and it is usually left to the admin/support person to find out what the hell happened. have you ever needed to support users? 8. Distro updates tend to crash my computer. Every time, I spend a couple of weeks getting my Ubuntu back up to speed. I'm sure others here will be able to advise you on 'best practice'. that would include backups before updates and a system layout which minimises problems (like a separate /home partition), etc. 10. I don’t see the point of two different heavy GUI desktops (KDE and Gnome). I see the point of desktops lighter on resources for niche uses but not two mainstream GUI desktops. Unite and you will be able to offer an even stronger mainstream GUI desktop. again, it seems what you really want/need is Windoze or a Mac. ;-) personally, I think there's a good reason that Linux users can choose from dozens of window managers (after all, you wouldn't be happy if there was only one type of lager on sale, or one type of car). my $0.02. -- regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Crown Hotel, Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-11-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue

Natalie, think cars. do you believe that having made driving easier, ie more user friendly (with synchro-mesh'd clutches and automated everything), drivers have become more competent, ie safer drivers? computing is very similar, IMO. yes, 'pure' users (ie someone employed to use one or two applications as part of their job) should not need to know anything outside their job-spec; but most users are both the user AND the administrator for their system, and de-skilling them even further is not going to help anyone. we need better education, better s/ware documentation, and better adherence ot standards (see John Carlyle-Clarke 1427h) by all means, but glitzy, automated GUIs which hide all of the nitty-gritty (..only developers/tinkerers should. Re: [Dorset] Which distro would you install?
I'm aware that the trend is towards VMs - I've been putting it off for a few months but I guess it might be time for me to experiment with them a little bit... I'm a little scared - see, I'm worried that it will mean more time troubleshooting my computer and less time actually using my computer... in an ideal world you'd have two computers, one (server setup) to run your vm's on, the second (your day-to-day favourite) to remote desktop into your vm's. both VMware and VirtualBox are pretty painless, stable and free (though, personally, I did loathe the VMware web administration thingy and stopped using it last year), the Sun software has the advantage of allowing very easy VM management from the command-line (ie you don't need to run a X server for the graphical i/f). both VMware and VirtualBox are very well supported via their respective 'communities', but there are other virtualisation products too. as to losing time troubleshooting, I think it's safe to say that the advantages of going virtual will outweigh the initial investment in time (of getting used to). a big advantage of virtualisation, IMO, is that each vm is just a set of files and, if something does go wrong, as in rootkit or malware, delete them, retrieve a copy from store, and you're back in business. there's also the fact that you can have multiple virtual hard disks which you connect and disconnect as needed, allowing you share/transfer data between systems as you please. hi Nicky, i just wondered what do other users in the dorset lug like to read? I stopped buying magazines altogether since I don't think they're usually worth the £6.50 cover price (£15 sounds outrageous), I used to like reading the Linux Magazine (US import at £4.25, but Border's have closed). these days I get most information from various newsgroups and newsletters, and I use my local library for book loans. -- regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-09-07 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2645413 Chat: http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.blitzed.orgchannel=%23dorset List info: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dorset
Re: [Dorset] Boot up fault Ubuntu 10.04
hi Clive, With:- sudo gedit /var/log/gdm/:0.log (thanks Dan) Got into :0.log but did not understand what was listed, large file, is there any way to save file and post to you without copy to list? Assume I can give different name with 'save as' from getdit and save to my documents area; without causing problems? Also don't know if what I'm seeing is latest start up info as it started OK for last 2x. on my system (slackware) the X server's log file is *overwritten* every time X starts up. to save the file you could simply copy it to your home directory, eg: sudo cp /var/log/gdm/:0.log ~/old.0.log -- regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-09-07 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2645413 Chat: http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.blitzed.orgchannel=%23dorset List info: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dorset

Re: [Dorset] Rob Pike on What's Wrong with Common Programming Languages Today.
hi Ralph, I suspect the writing style is down to Kernighan. interesting observation. Ritchie, Kernighan, Pike, Plauger -- all of the books these guys wrote are worth having on the shelf, IMO. If you enjoyed TPoP then consider Kernighan and Pike's _The Unix Programming Environment_. I'm pleased to see that our bookshelf tastes are so similar. :-) .. moves on to make, C, yacc, etc. yes, the HOC examples. I did learn a lot from these back 'in the days'. btw, you forgot to mention the (brief) introduction to creating documentation, ie how to build a proper man page. on balance I'd say that every person wanting to program for *nix systems ought to study (and work through) those texts, very educational, very rewarding. -- kindest regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Wednesday 2010-08-04 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2645413 Chat: http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.blitzed.orgchannel=%23dorset List info: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dorset

Re: [Dorset] Smoke and wireless
hi Peter, Question: In looking through /etc for teh wireless configuration file, I find lots of folders of things that don't exist anymore, such as folders for two previous versions of firefox, and wpa_supplicant, etc. Can I delete these? under slackware some files and/or directories can remain after a given s/ware has been uninstalled (usually because files had been added or modified), these can then be removed manually. not sure why you'd find files relating to Mozilla under '/etc'. which distro do you use? -- regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Wednesday 2010-08-04 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2645413 Chat: http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.blitzed.orgchannel=%23dorset List info: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dorset

Re: [Dorset] Samba on UNR
Interesting. My new (original) smb.conf has neither host allow or hosts deny. which means that any and all hosts are allowed; that's fine for a private network thsat's firewalled (by the router, I presume). standard practice is to first deny all access and then selective allow. Re: [Dorset] C4L visit and Copy home to another partition
hi Ralph, cd /media sudo rsync -a home Backup It may be worth adding `H' to `-a' to make `-aH' in case there's lots of hard links. yes, and perhaps '-S' (your command catered for sparse files) and '-v' too. I only mentioned 'rsync' because I think it's more efficient (works incrementally), and 'future-proof' in that it will be easy to modify should Clive decide to backup to a NAS or another computer. -- regards, jr. time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. -- Next meeting: Blandford Forum, Tuesday 2010-07-06 20:00 http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2645413 Chat: http://www.mibbit.com/?server=irc.blitzed.orgchannel=%23dorset List info: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/dorset
Re: [Dorset] C4L visit and Copy home to another partition
hi Ralph, Without -c it relies on length and modification time to decide if the destination is out of date, IIRC. And even with -c I've had occasion where it thinks nothing needs doing yet the SHA1 digests differ.
