RE: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem

2004-11-19 Thread Shawn K. Hall
I'm with Charlie - if we don't actually _fix_ the SP2 problem
**without** decreasing the security of the system then we didn't
"fix" anything.

Maybe roll up a release but leave the SP2 'fixes' that we're
currently toying with out. I do not want to change the registry and
give any special rights to either explorer.exe or iexplore.exe -
doing so is asking for trouble.

No way would I consider enabling ActiveX on my desktop globally.
Especially since it's nearly impossible to run as less than local admin.
That's a recipe for quietly having a zombie some day, or even a root kit
installed. I'm willing to let a specific application (ie, DQSD) run one
or more ActiveX components on my desktop, but it stops there. If we
can't find a more long term solution to the problem, I'm quite willing
to either give up the calendar (a minor loss, for me personally), or
click twice during logon, and if/when I open help. An annoyance, but
hardly life altering. A root kit on my machine would quickly become life
altering. So count me in favour of releasing a version with rolled up
fixes, with or without a more long term solution to the SP2 problem.

Charlie.

 Thanks Monty,

I downloaded the "comx" and "racetv" searches and they both worked for me.
and my calendar works too. and I do have SP2 installed. so if other people
are having problems with these searches it is probably because activeX is
disabled by default in SP2. But you can enable activeX through the internet
options panel.

These are searches that have been added since the last release. You can
fetch them directly from CVS via -

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/dqsd/dqsd/searches/racetv.xml
and
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/dqsd/dqsd/searches/comx.xml

right-click on 'download' and do a 'save as' to fetch the file to your
machine..

2004-11-19 Thread Monty Scroggins
I had removed the convertstylestoinline() in both comx and racetv some
time ago. It loaded a ton of css that wasnt needed or used for a
simple html page.. You might have old versions of these..

Neither of the searches with popup windows work, as far as I can tell,
because of the iexplore.exe issue. I've tried adding a
mark-of-the-web, but either I didn't do it right, or it just didn't work.

Part of the problem with popup windows is that they all use
convertStylesToInline, where they read the main document's stylesheet
- that's apparently ubiquitously disallowed in SP2. I tried omitting
the stylesheet copying, but then there was some other problem, etc, ad
sleepium.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Fix for XP SP2 Problem

2004-11-19 Thread Chuck Baker

I used the Registry workaround to take care of the SP2 problem and
everything seems to work. the calendar works for me. But I can't find any
the "comx" and "racetv" searches that are made referenced to in the posting
here and I have the most recent version of DQSD.

I also saw a post that was asking if the registry fix would disable blocking
in other IE windows. Well for me it still worked when opening a IE browser
window but that was a hassle for me to have it keep asking me if I wanted an
activeX control used so in internet options I just enable the activeX
controls and then I didn't get bothered with it.

If other people are having problems with functions not working after the
registry edit and you don't mind have activeX enabled you might try enabling
activeX through the internet options panel and see if that does anything for
you.

Monty and all,

I was confused, there. I typed 'calendar', but I was thinking of the
help window. That's another dead feature, IIRC. The problem with that
is, the majority of code runs inside explorer.exe, so the registry fix
takes care of that, but the help window and some popup windows run
inside iexplore.exe unconditionally. So you would have to apply the
registry hack to iexplore.exe as well, and that doesn't feel so good.

IMHO, we ought to have something SP2-compatible first.
I don't think it does us any good to push out a new version when our
primary 'new' audience still can't use it.
That sentence completely sums-up the problem as I see it. I don't have any
problem using normal DQSD on XPSP2 and never have - I just click through
the warning bar and carry on. As far as I can tell, everything (well, the
bits I use, which include the calendar) works OK. Are there people who
'can't use it'?

Lots of the 'fixes' being proposed actually seem to me to come at a much
higher cost than clicking past a warning when I boot. They also seem to be
very variable in their effectiveness and side-effect profile.

I'm not arguing against a proper fix for SP2, I'm just saying that it
appears to me that at the current rate of progress we might wait an
infinitely long time for it to emerge, and we might as well release a
version of DQSD in the mean time.
