RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD 3.1.9 BETA-1

2004-12-04 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Kim,

This is not for non-techies, but some of you might
find it interesting. IE uses an alternate NTFS
stream to write zone information to the file, so
it's not visible to the user, but apps can read
and process it. It's kind of a high-tech, and less
 obvious, Mark of the web.

Oh man, that sounds like fun. I almost (ALMOST) wish I had a spare
box to put xpsp2 onto so I could play with this discovery myself.
Thanks for the update Kim!

Regards,

Shawn K. Hall

RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD 3.1.9 BETA-1

2004-12-03 Thread Kim Gräsman
Shawn and Paul,

I can confirm that. For some bizarre reason, this page does not provoke the
Internet Explorer InfoBar.

Usually, a page with only the following contents:

html
  head
script
/script
  /head
/html

brings up the InfoBar on account of the script tag.

I did notice, however, that Shawn's ggd-discover page is shown as part of
the Internet zone - that must be because it's saved from the web.
However, it contains no mark of the web, as is the standard way of showing
where pages were saved from to give them the same permissions as they
originally had. I'm confused.

15 minutes later

I've had a revelation. This is not for non-techies, but some of you might
find it interesting. IE uses an alternate NTFS stream to write zone
information to the file, so it's not visible to the user, but apps can read
and process it. It's kind of a high-tech, and less obvious, Mark of the web.

I've done some testing here, and it's not really consistent - I made two
pages with content similar to what I posted above, and linked to one from
the other. Having allowed blocked content in the one, I expected the other
page to ask me again, but it didn't. I have an theory as to what's going on,
but I'm not going to go into any detail (unless anybody wants me to), but
suffice to say that:

a) I cannot find a definitive source that says Allow Blocked Content is only
effective for the current page
b) My experiments show the opposite

Hope that helps,
Kim

When I click the download this script link at the bottom of

that gives you an allow-blocked-content option.

  Hi Paul,

Thanks, Shawn, but when I go to that page, I don't
get an active content (or whatever) warning.

Content on remote servers is usually blocked silently (no warning).
If you DO NOT see green text in the first textbox then it was
blocked. You'll need to download the script (linked from the bottom
of the page) in order to test it locally for the security warning.

Menu button gone in vertical mode (was: RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD 3.1.9 BETA-1)

2004-12-03 Thread Kim Gräsman
Hi Mitchell,

The width is always the width, unfortunately, so when your bar is vertical,
you have to make it wide enough for the little button to appear.
Or you can add the following flag to localprefs.js:

/* Show the menu '' popup button?
 *  0 = never
 *  1 = always
 * 2 = if search bar width is greater than clocklongwidth [default]
 */
showbutton = 2;

and set it to whatever you like.

Note also that F1 brings up the menu if DQSD has focus - however, I just
noticed a bug that F1 not only brings up the DQSD menu, but also the Windows
help if the bar is vertically docked. We'll look into that.

2004-12-02 Thread Paul

Thanks, Monty.

I understand the point. You're basically reiterating exactly what Ken said. I'm not
asking for elaboration, though. I'm asking for evidence. For instance, you implied
that after I approved dqsd, I'd still get the warning if a different webpage tried to
run flagged content. Fine, but I don't know any site that generate that warning, so I
can't test it. Perhaps you could provide me with a link to such a site?

Again, it's not that I don't trust y'all; I just like to prove things to myself.
Please don't take offense.

TIA,

2004-12-02 Thread Charlie Russel

Something else going on there, then. Thats
the way it 3.1.8 behaves here, certainly. I admit, I have downloaded but not
yet installed the 3.1.9 beta.

Thanks, Charlie. That would have been
exactly what I wanted, except it didnt work. First of all, as soon as I
approved dqsd, I got an error about being unable to load the
enhanced keyboard or something. It said that some combinations of hotkeys might
not work. Then, when as you suggested, I entered just a question mark as the
search, I got an IE Script Error message.

Click Allow Active Content to enable dqsd. Now, type ? into the search window,
to bring up help bingo, it prompts you, again.

Kim, by refuse I *do* mean the first thing you said, not
the second--i.e., the
security issue; not the annoyance.

I *do* trust you, intentions-wise; but I'd feel more comfortable in the
correctness
department if you could site some authority or other evidence to support that
by
clicking allow active content I'm issuing page-specific, and not
global, permission.

 Hi Paul,

FWIW, Allow Blocked Content is currently the safest way of making DQSD
work.
It only allows the current executing page (as opposed to the application
running DQSD, or the system as a whole) to do whatever it tries to do, and
trust me, you can trust us. :)

If, by refuse, you mean that you can't bear the annoyance of
have to
Allow, then I hear you. We're working on it!

Hi Paul,

...I don't know any site that generate that warning, so I
can't test it. Perhaps you could provide me with a link to
 such a site?

The page here should work:
  http://ReliableAnswers.com/x/dqsd/ggd-discover.asp

I can almost guarantee it'll fail in your browser by default, just
under IE6's default security config. However, you can download the
script from the bottom and run it from your desktop, which does
essentially the same thing, but it does it in 'local' context -
under XP SP2 you should see it fail or prompt you depending on your
settings.

Oh, and all the script does is create an XMLHttp object to download
a 'scrape' of Google in order to discover your Google Desktop key
(using RegEx). If you don't have a Google Desktop Key it does
nothing for you at all, but attempt to create that XMLHttp 'activex'
object, which is the security test you're after.

Regards,

Shawn K. Hall

2004-12-02 Thread Shawn K. Hall
