See eBay item 130130901159. These are homebrew (not Tubesters) and
sold for $25.00. I saw them but did not buy. Were there instructions
published to make these?

Sartori published an article in QST in 1972 (I think). At least it was in
the early to mid 70's. The article was a how to article for the tubesters
that he later produced commercially. As has been pointed out on this list
before Sartori worked in the semiconductor industry and was able to get
transistors branded for him and with the package needed. Even at the time
the article came out the transistors were hard to find in the package
(TO-220 or TO-202 style I think) used by several of the transistors that
Sartori used. The small TO-92 package was obtainable but the larger (TO-220
or TO-202) package was hard to find.

I have been looking for a set of these tubesters and have posted requests on
here from time to time but have not had a lot of success. I think many on
this list feel that solid state tube replacements are a sacrilege to put a
non stock part in the Drake line but I look for parts to keep my twins
working and if they are solid state them that means they will work that much
longer. Tubes are obtainable but are no longer produced in large scale. I
am also told that the performance of the solid state tubes is not as good as
the hollow state original tubes.

Your mileage may vary.

I hope this was helpful.

Bob -

These are most likely from an April 1977 QST article by Howard Sartori,
W5DA. They were "OK", but used obscure devices even when the article
was published. He later manufactured and sold commercial versions.

Like most "re-engineering" of successful commercial designs, they
worked, but were definitely inferior to a set of good tubes.

My viewpoint is that if one day, when there are NO tubes to be found,
(not likely in our lifetime, although a few are getting expensive,) THEN
it might be worth considering. A better answer is to keep vintage gear
as designed, and enjoy it for what it is/was. You would be far better
served to just purchase a more modern rig if you want solid-state.

Actually, even the most expensive "Drake" tubes are well within
inflationary price adjustments. The 6JB6 sold for a little under $3 in
1966, and most prices have increased about 10 times since then in
"Dollars". So $30 isn't all that far off. I purchased a new Volvo
sedan in 1969 for $3,300, including AM/FM radio and A/C. The equivalent
model cost me $10,000 in 1976. $33,000 won't get me the equivalent
model today!!

Must be oxygen deprivation from all the fireworks smoke.

I suddenly had a vision of 2A knobs and a Drake logo decal applied to my blue
Fender Stratocaster.

Or maybe it's recoil from working on my HyGain 3750 today.

Time for bed. Happy Fourth, everyone.
