Re: [drakelist] Cap rating
Garey Barrell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Doc - Wow, not pretty! :-) The original was a ceramic trimmer of 3 - 50 pF, with a single 27 pF 1 kV cap in series with it. This is the neutralization cap and so has to handle the full plate voltage (700 VDC no load) plus peak RF voltage. This must be a very early TR-3 (s/n <4000) to have the ceramic trimmer in that position. Later units used a small air variable here, a Hammarlund MAPC, 2.7 - 8.4 pF, with a 12.5 pF @ 2KV disc ceramic in parallel. I suspect they had problems with that ceramic trimmer breaking down (as did Collins in early 75S-1s) and changed to the air variable. The same air variable and parallel cap was used throughout the rest of the TR-3/4 series, so you can get one from just about any parts unit. If you can't find one, I may have one here somewhere. I'm not too well organized after the move! Ya really shouldn't move after 25 years on one house, especially if you're a pack rat..! :-) 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B & C-Line Service Supplement CDs Halo.net wrote: Garey, You'll recognize the disk caps in the attached picture from the finals plate circuit.. these are in bad shape & I can't lift any info from them. Re: [drakelist] T-4XB problem?
Garey Barrell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Boyd - Well I've never noticed the bias voltage on the relay tube going up with increased AF gain, but then I've never looked! :-) Other things that can cause the relay to "hang" is if the ANTI-VOX is turned up too high (might key in on AF Gain affecting bias), or if the VOX is turned up too high, or if R106 has gone up in value. Try turning the ANTI-VOX down all the way, and then bringing up slowly until it just prevents tripping of VOX. As you can see, it's a fairly high impedance circuit, so can be difficult to troubleshoot. You should be seeing closer to -5 to -6V on Pin 2 in receive. Depending upon your unit serial number, you might try reducing R135 from 68k to 33k. This "stiffens" the cutoff supply and you should see closer to -10V on PIn 2 with key-up. I have seen a leaky cap at C205, but not likely. Let us know! 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B & C-Line Service Supplement CDs Boyd Van Horn wrote: Garey, I also have a tr4-C that the relay holds in transmit. I have done all the things you recommended. I did notice one thing. The neg bias on the 6ev7 on the relay control side is -3.7 volts when it is in receive. But when you increase the audio gain, the bias goes to -6.8 volts. Is this normal ? Steve & Others: I'm not sure why you all think the seller is "fixit-fox" (Charlie Talbott, K3ICH)..He has sold me many difficult to find parts to refurbish several TR-7's (The AF/RF on/off switch for example)...Always easy and fair to deal with, and even sent me some parts before he got payment. Now Martin who sells as "Radio-Mart" and buys as "Gottahaveit"that's a horse of a different color. i.e., Running between 3.5 and 4% E-Bay complaintsfor about 5,000 sales that's a bunch of pissed-off people. And now he's parting out several brands of radios, including a TR-7...I wouldn't buy any of the parts from him, since the last (and only) part I bought from him was junkA National S-Meter, NFG, and didn't even have the glass front on it.He's even trying to sell off the individual metal pieces.. At least when you buy from Charlie, you know the part is going to work, etc. Enough of this I guess...not trying to start a war. "Ron Baker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- A year ago or so I saw one of the stripped TR7 Chassis on eBay, not sure who was selling it, there are 2 or 3 doing that now.Anyway it was a reasonably high serial number, so I bought it, the front panel assembly (sold separately), and several of the boards (again sold separately). I put it all back together and scrounged a couple of missing boards and got it working. With little effort beyond reassembly the radio worked and still works fine. So I know for sure there is at least one TR7 that came back from the dead and is enjoying a 2nd chance at life. Re: [drakelist] T-4XB problem?
Garey, I also have a tr4-C that the relay holds in transmit. I have done all the things you recommended. I did notice one thing. The neg bias on the 6ev7 on the relay control side is -3.7 volts when it is in receive. But when you increase the audio gain, the bias goes to -6.8 volts. Is this normal ? Sincerely, Boyd W0BUW Garey Barrell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Garey Barrell made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Bill - Bias voltage is relied on to open the relay by cutting off the 6EV7 relay tube and if that voltage is low because of leaky electrolytics or ripple in the Bias supply in the AC-3/4., the tube doesn't cut off as quickly. Since you have eliminated the supply, another possibility is that the 6EV7 is slightly gassy, which again causes tube to want to continue conducting after it is told to cut off, especially after long transmissions! Yet another possibility is that the final tubes are dropping in emission, which requires you to set the bias voltage more positive to set the idle current to the proper value, again resulting in reduced negative voltage to cut off the 6EV7. Lastly, there are several very high value carbon composition resistors in the biasing for the VOX. ANTI-VOX and Relay circuits that can increase in value with age, resulting in insufficient cut off bias for the 6EV7. A rule de thumb is that the bias voltage at the Final grids is typically -60 to -65VDC for nominal idle current.
