Hi, I believe you will find the information you describe at _www.wb4hfn.com_

You can google for Drake PTO friction and it comes up with that sight.

2008-03-06 Thread wb4hfn
Dave, over the last few years I have repaired and refurbished many TR7 radios
which drove the first article I wrote on the TR7. I have been collecting a
lot of data on this subject and plan on writing follow-up articles in the
future. In the meantime, if anyone has finished articles on repairing the
TR7, I will make space available on the WB4HFN website to publish those.

To the list,
Has anyone ever compiled a troubleshooting doc for the TR7?? I know there are
a lot of bits and pieces out there and have downloaded and printed many of them
for my files. The service manual is also imperative, as well as extender
cards. This would be a good thing for us Drake lovers to have a TR7 specific
guide. Particularly since these radios are now getting some age on them and
components harder to find. I just bought my second TR7 in non-working
condition and will begin restoration soon, so this is up front on my mind.
Any comments would be welcome. Maybe Ron Baker could expand on his excellent
inside the TR7 article on his website. Or all of us could contribute info
and experiences to someone else who could compile and document?? It could then
be posted on Ron's site for all to access. Or the more industrious could print
a book or CD and offer for a fair price.
As an example, I have a copy of the Swan Compendium, without which, restoring a
swan is much more difficult. Common problems and common solutions. I think it
was $25 back when it was available.
Another example is the video that was produced some time back for the KWM2.!!
Thanks,

Re: [drakelist] re TR7 PTO/troubleshooting in general

2008-03-06 Thread k9sqg

I've brought up this idea several times to various groups, including post Drake
Forum discussions at Hamvention.? Many of us have valuable experiences that,
taken as a whole, represent what might be considered as how the experts fault
isolate.? One of the key elements in fault isolation is knowing the
probabilities of various failures from the symptoms.? For example, the service
manuals don't tell you, for a given symptom(s), what the first most likely
cause is, what the second most likely cause is, and so forth.? The expert
service technician knows this based upon experience, you know, that element
that makes one over qualified and thus unable to perform (not sure I
understand that concept but the job interviewers do).? Such an undertaking can
be quite large and would be the labor of love.? I encourage the pursuit of such
an endeavor.?

Along with the above, of interest might be tips and tricks, those things the
experts use to make the job easier.? For example, I have a process that I use
when rebuilding/upgrading power supplies for the L4B/L7 linears.? Having the
parts on hand and a workable process speeds things up and keeps costs down.?
The result, your Drakes are returned to service sooner, and this means more fun
sooner...

Well, looks like I brought up a popular topic. Thats a good thing! I would
suggest a repository of information, or simply said, a place where any of us
can send information or links such that some Drake loving volunteer can compile
the information and check for accuracy. This should be someone who has lots
of experience with the 7 series. I think I have an idea, and will contact
that person separately so as not to put him on the spot on the list.

Until then, I'll likely need some help from you guys as I progress. And you'll
here me more often on Sunday afternoons as well !!

[drakelist] TR7 Project

2008-03-06 Thread David Chris Drake
I began to disassemble my project TR7 this afternoon and heard something
rattling around toward the front of the rig. As I kept disassembling, it
finally fell out, well pieces of whatever it was fell out. The two pieces
looked awfull familiar, but I just could'nt figure out where they came from.
Then after looking over my service manual pictorials, I found it. The top
pieces of T2101, part no 2512001, the transformer on the power supply board. I
have not pulled the board yet, but does anyone have an idea of a source for
this part?? Or do I look for a parted out rig's board? I'm satisfied it
should be replacedlooks like it may have been a bit too hot. And, of
course, some failure analysis will need to follow.

Don, if you have one to offer up, I'd sure be gratefull. If you don't have one
to spare, I'll likely start looking for another board thats been parted out.
Parted out boards seem to be on ebay weekly, but I'd rather find the part to
fix up what I have. I'm in no big hurry. I'll probably pull the pwr. supply
board tomorrow and give it a better inspection. Sounds like we're getting some
nasty weather coming, so I'll probably work out in my shop quite a bit. I need
to continue disassembly and start cleaning contacts, and do further visual.
Thanks

I have some replacement meters available for the Drake W-4, WV-4, MN-4,
and MN-2000. The housings of these meters are physically identical to
the original Drake meters and mount with the same hardware in the same
mounting holes. The plastic cover is identical in shape to the Drake,
but the lower portion is clear, not painted black. The meter face itself
is a non-Drake face, the needle is black, not red, and is fatter
 (flattened out) at the end.

Electrically, these meters differ from the originals and require a shunt
(I use 1% tolerance components) to make them read correctly when
dropping them in to the Drake circuitry without having to recalibrate
 anything.

I am offering these meters in two ways:

DM-Rep - Tested replacement meter with shunt, non-Drake meter face,
and clear meter cover. Purchaser installs his own Drake meter
face and cover. Due to the possibility of damage to the needle
or movement by the purchaser when installing the meter face,
there is NO GUARANTEE and NO REFUND on this configuration and
only money orders will be accepted as payment. No checks.

$27.50 + $6.00 = $33.50 Priority Mail (not insured)
$27.50 + $7.65 = $35.15 Priority Mail (insured)
$27.50 + $8.95 = $36.45 UPS Ground (insured)

DM-EX - Tested replacement meter with shunt. Purchaser sends his/her
old meter to me and I will install the Drake meter face and
Drake cover on the replacement meter. I will send back both
the fully configured replacement meter and the unused clear
cover. Payment for this configuration can be via money order
  or PayPal. No checks.

$32.50 + $6.00 = $38.50 Priority Mail (not insured)
$32.50 + $7.65 = $40.15 Priority Mail (insured)
$32.50 + $8.95 = $41.45 UPS Ground (insured)

The UPS Ground shipping costs shown above are for lower 48 US state
addresses only. UPS to AK and HI, and all overseas shipping costs of any
type would have to be determined on a case by case basis.

Please contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you wish to order
 or have any questions.

 Thanks.
