[drakelist] TR7 Power Output Addendum

2008-07-05 Thread Jim Shorney
"Jim Shorney" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--

I had intentionally set the power output of my TR7 after the PA rebuild a
little on the conservative side just
before Field Day, to see how things went. Since I still had the radio on the
bench after investigating the mic
connector grounding, I decided to set it up "by the book" and see how that
worked. The service manual
says to set the PO to 140-150 watts on 20 meters with the ALC pot. So I went
for 145 watts. I found that to
get ALC action across the whole 10 Meter band, I had to adjust the predriver
gain pot at 29.7 MHz.
Granted, most people would probably never transmit that high in the band with
the TR7, but I wanted to get it
right. Here are the results:

1.8 MHz - 135 Watts
3.8 MHz - 146 Watts
7.3 MHz - 151 Watts
14.3 MHz - 145 Watts
18.1 MHz - 120 Watts
21.3 MHz - 117 Watts
24.9 MHz - 110 Watts
27.3 MHz - 109 Watts
28.3 MHz - 108 Watts
28.8 MHz - 106 Watts
29.3 MHz - 104 Watts
29.7 MHz - 98 Watts

After she was buttoned up, I was tuning around 20 Meters to see what could be
heard. At 22:10 CDT, I
worked the TO5E DXpedition on 14.250 - he answered my first call. I think it's
working

Re: [drakelist] TR-4C tune-up procedures....

2008-07-05 Thread Gary Poland
Phil,
Its not always easy to see the plate dip on the TR-4 plate meter, especially
at low plate currents. Over time you will get an idea where the controls
normally sit for a given band. I start out by setting the PLATE LOAD and TUNE
controls in a ballpark position. Then I peak the receiver noise with the RF
TUNE control. Then I put the transceiver in CW mode and adjust the XMTR GAIN
control just enough to see an increase in plate current. Keeping the
transceiver keyed only for brief periods I then adjust the RF TUNE and PLATE
controls for maximum output. Next step is to bring the XMTR GAIN to 12:00 and
adjust everything for maximum output. I tune all my Drakes this way. You really
need to invest in a watt meter even if its just a relative output meter and not
calibrated.

[drakelist] TR-4C tune-up procedures....

2008-07-05 Thread Philip Grocki
Folks:

Does anyone out there have a suggestion (or two) on how I can "tune" my Drake
TR-4C for transmitting an easier way other than the "manual's" method?I do
not have access to a wattmeter or anything like that to put between the TR-4C
and the antenna.

I kind of find the manual's tune-up procedure a little too complicated(?) and
perhaps prone to me accidentally over-loading the "final" tubes. Just going by
making adjustments to the meter reading(s) seems a bit "iffy" to me.

Just my feeling.

Thank you.

Sounds like a bad mic element or, bad solder joint or, maybe even an open
ground connection... Suggest using a different mic. 73's, Charlie...

If you had to use an amplifier, something is wrong somewhere.

As with many things the best way to identify a defect in a system is to "have
one in the closet."

Try a different microphone. (A true ham never has just one of anything --
which may by necessity include friends with microphones.)

Yes, you can probably check the mic circuit by keying the rig and dragging
a ground across the mic input, and seeing if the plate current deflects at
all...

But... I'm guessing it's mic...

OK. Well if it works in TUNE, then ALL the audio stages are working
fine. In TUNE, the first mic preamp stage is switched to become a phase
shift audio oscillator, and that tone then goes through the transmitter
just as if you whistled into the microphone. That same tone is used for
the sidetone, and to keep the PTT relay closed in CW. So this leaves a
very narrow field for failures, i.e., a couple of switch contacts or the
mic jack.

So... Either John is correct that your mic is bad, (D-104's are prone to
failing from heat and/or humidity,) the wiring to the mic jack is wrong,
or there is a problem with the switching between mic amp and TUNE oscillator.

You can check the mic with a scope, if you have one, if not, a VTVM or
"good" DMM right at the cartridge terminals should show considerable (a
volt or so) AC output when you whistle into the mic.

Hi Garey,

Well, I was HOPING that the solution to my lack of audio on SSB / AM with
the T-4X would have been that easy, but alas, there was no joy in Muddville
(again) when I tried it here (double sigh!).

I measured the resistances on both V9 & V10 afterward, & all appears to be
normal in that regard...next I guess I'll have to measure the actual
voltages themeselves.

The rig fires up on CW splendidly: it tunes up just as outlined in the
manual, has a nice side tone, mutes the R-4, etc. etc. Yet, when I switch to
SSB, I CAN trip the internal relay by pressing the PTT button --- but I get
only a VERY slight indication of plate current (NO output power) in the
mode, and no upward kicks of the meter in any position when tapping the
mic...even with the gain cranked way up.

With the rig set to AM, the plate current DOES swing hard right momentarily
when the PTT is first keyed, but I suspect that has something to do with the
controlled carrier set-up in that mode.

Back to the ol' proverbial drawing board for me, I guess...!

[drakelist] FS. new main tuning knobs have arrived!

2008-07-05 Thread ALAN PHILLIPS
Well, I needed a set of new main tuning knobs for my "B" line and my TR4. They
have not been made for years. So, I had them made by the original Factory that
made them for Drake. I made them better by including a 1/4 brass insert for the
PTO shaft instead of plastic. The chrome insert is already factory mounted.
Cost is $20 each, $3 dollar shipping for up to 3 knobs.

Also, I have new bar knobs. A set of 9 knobs for the B line, (includes
preselector knob.) is $36..$3 shipping. Or they are $4 each.

Please see the pictures on WB4HFN.com

Thanks for looking, 73's Al KC9YS.
P.SThe skirts are not included. As of now, no-one is making the skirts. I
get many requests for them.Al
