RE: [drakelist] Microphone for T-4XC

2008-07-22 Thread Joe Spears
I just got my Drake T-4X and R-4A back on the air after a long time out of
service. I use an Electro-Voice EV-664 which is the mike I got when I
bought the set in the mid-60's. I have always had good luck with it and
receive great audio reports.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to Drake and I just bought a complete C station that was only used
once or twice and only on CW therefore there is no mike. I know I will have
a million questions for the list but right now I am waiting for the station
to show up. So while I am waiting I would like to know which is the best
mike to get? I know the Shure and the D-104? What other options? which do
you like the best?

Please help me decide!

Thanks!

Just about ANY _High-Z_ (high impedance) microphone will "work" with
the T-4XC. Which one is best depends in part on your particular voice
characteristics, manner of speaking, how you hold the microphone, how
far away you speak from the mic, etc., etc., etc. Any of the Shure,
Electro-Voice, Astatic or other name brand High-Z microphones will work
well, but each one has a slightly different sound.

That said, MOST people seem happy with the results from the Shure 444 or
the Astatic D-104 or the E-V 664. The D-104 in particular is sensitive
to the actual impedance seen by the cartridge. The version with the
pre-amp in the base eliminates this problem, since the preamp presents a
known, constant load for the mic cartridge, regardless of the
transmitter it's used with.

If you can, arrange to borrow a mic or two from friends and ask them to
tell you which one sounds most "like you" in person.

Re: [drakelist] R4 B power supply cap

2008-07-22 Thread Gary Poland
Lew,
Simply disconnect the wiring from the old capacitor and solder in new
electrolytics under the chassis. You can install a terminal strip or just
follow the wiring back to the source PCB and solder the new caps at that point,
cap & stowing the unused wire.

Relay from Tom:

I'm not on the Drake list at the present time. Could you do me a favor
and pass the word to them, or Lew anyway, that I have R-4B caps and kits
in stock for immediate shipment?

The can-cap is the 100-100-100-22 and goes for $24.95 + shipping. If a
person wants the full kit it includes the can plus one each 10 @ 200, 10
@ 35, 220 @ 6.3, and 1000 @ 16, all axials. It goes for $28.50 + shipping.

I appreciate the help very much!

I do not know if Tom, N0JMY has one but you might take a look at his web page
at http://www.hayseedhamfest.com/capkit.htm and ask him if he has an
electrolytic kit for the R4B but he does have one listed for the R4C and I
understood he was working on others.

Good luck.

Re: [drakelist] R4 B power supply cap

2008-07-22 Thread EP Swynar
Hi Lew,

All I did here with my R-4 was simply snip off the connections to the cap, &
replace the "innards" of the original with outboard, separate photo-flash
units...

The original bad can is still there, undisturbed, & from atop the chassis it
all looks "stock"...below deck, of course, it is not --- but the fix was
simple, AND effective (and there was a LOT room down below to do it, too).

2008-07-22 Thread George Runyan
Hello All:

I have a nice Drake 2B for sale that is excess to my needs. It is in good
working order, used last night on the West Coast AMI Net. The cabinet has a
few scratches that would be easily touched up. The front panel looks very
nice. There are no additional holes or mods. It comes with an original
manual. I am asking $175.00 + shipping from Lemon Grove 91945 near San
Diego. I normally use Fed-Ex fully insured. Pictures are available upon
request. My main Drake station is the "B" line including the L-4B. Nice
stuff indeed. Please respond off the list. Thanks!

I did bid on it but let it go when it got up over a hundred. I already have
